Chiappa Double Badger Review

  • The Chiappa Double Badger chambered in .22LR and .410 shotgun seems to be a good option for small game and/or survival hunting. Compact, lightweight, and the ability to fold in half add to its good accuracy and ease of use. Young and old(er) hunters alike will definitely bag a lot of game with this handy combination gun.

    Great review, and great gun. I've been thinking about one for awhile, and jumped on it a few weeks ago.
    I really like the handing, finish, and sights on this gun. I've found the accuracy of the .22 to be more than adequate and I'm really looking forward to bringing it along on future camping trips to supplement the fresh fish with some fresh red meat. :)

    And now I know why I can't seem to keep these things in stock long enough to sneak one out to the range. They really do seem to perform as nice as they look, which is rare at the sub $300 price range. I just wish they'd finally release a .17HMR over .410 loadout.

    Ideal for plinking, paper targets, pest control and small to medium size game (slugs!) hunting. Also, not bad as the self defense gun... I guess, if that choke could be removed, the upper barrel would've been able to chamber 45 Long Colt too. Nice review!

    shot a brand new one and on the 15th .22 mag shot the firing pin was stuck out after cocking. Gun store is now having their gunsmith check if it is defective. Chiappa states his is caused from dry firing. I had not dry fired it, but I dont know if it was prior at the store, but it did shoot 14 rounds before failing. I like the gun when it worked.

    Have you tried shooting a .45 long colt thru the .410? Or the very rare .41 Special? I do it all the time during deer season, but they have to be close. 30 or 40 yards, as the bullet is swigged down to a .41 caliber and sort of tumbles. The 22/410 is a great all around food gun, but having the ability to shoot a .45 LC as a backup is great. I killed a couple of wild hogs over the years that would have eaten me, if they had the upper hand!!

    • @mmatt
      @mmatt  6 років тому +2

      No I haven't tried that. I have heard that some .410s will be fine doing that anthers will not. Mine isn't stamped for .45 LC so I doubt I'd try it without a long string that pulls the trigger while I'm 50 feet away. lol!

  • @DontTreadOnMeh

    I have one of these, it's much better if you open it differently. Tuck the stock up into your armpit and push the lever with the back of your shooting hand/fingers like you would a lever action rifle. Use your other hand to hold the gun under the hinge to support the barrels and stock. Let both ends fall gently so that the breeches are looking right back up at you. Hold it like that with your support hand and load with your strong hand.
    If you hold the gun with one hand and work the lever with the other like in the video then you stand a chance of pulling the lever crooked and jamming the gun. I know because my girlfriend did this with mine... twice...

    Interesting. Been wanting a combo gun. I was a little surprised at the pattern size with the full choke. I expected them to be a little tighter. I almost wonder if there is too much constriction and it is causing pellets to bounce off each other- that is known to happen. No choke tubes though, so u can't test a different choke. I hope they make a centerfire version- I would love to have a 223 (or 30-30 or 308) over a 12 or 20 ga. That would be very useful. Or even a 357 or 44 mag. A 22 mag is fine for starters, but they need a centerfire- that is an unexploited market. Obama banned the Baikals from import by exec order, so i hear, and Savage has not mafe the 42 in centerfire, and their stock looks crappy and the quality control seems iffy. Come on, Chiappa!

    • @mmatt
      @mmatt  7 років тому

      I was hoping for better results from the shotgun barrel too, but I guess you really can't expect too much from a .410
      I'd love to see a .22LR over 20 gauge with screw in chokes kinda like the old Savage 24.
      A .223 over 12 or 20 gauge would be pretty awesome too though. :-)

    I ended up not buying one. What I didn't like about this one was primarily the odd lever that you have to have two hands to use. I much prefer being able to pop the gun open with one hand while going for the cartridges with my other. That, combined with some serious quality control difficiencies being reported and I'm out. I still want it to work, though. I have some old Savage combination guns that I prefer, but they don't fold in half. You can take them down, but I prefer a folding shotgun like the Beretta 412 series and the new ones coming out of Turkey.

    • @mmatt
      @mmatt  9 років тому +3

      Nope. The Chiappa has a .410 chamber. Guns that shoot both .45LC and .410 shells are actually chambered for .45LC and so the smaller diameter .410 shell will fit in the chamber. A larger diameter .45LC might fit in a .410 shotgun's chamber but the bullet is likely too largely to exit the barrel which could potentially cause significant damage and/or injury.

    No Worries - the fiber optic sights would have broken eventually anyway. I hate them on firearms in general.
    They are all the rage these days but like you say, the vast majority of them are too large and poorly defined to provide precision aiming. They are also very fragile, and will leave you without an aiming reverence at all the first time your rifle take a knock.

    I don't think it's relevant to rate this gun as a rodent gun using .410 ammo at more than 25 yards. The .22 would be the definite choice for rodent targets at further distances.

    This gun isnt thst great, you dont have control over the hammer.
    Once you close it the hammer is set.

    What is it with you ID10TS using #6 for small game you should never shoot anything but a #4 for more power and smaller spread!!!

      You sure have a nice way of sharing info... lol
      Do you assume that anyone is an idiot just because they don't know everything you know? Does that make you an idiot because I know some things that you don't? Or are you someone who thinks that they know everything and isn't willing to learn anything new anymore... 🤔
