  • “As my pop continued to struggle with various health issues, I was imagining what my life would be like without him and how terribly I’d miss him. While the song is incredibly personal, I think anyone can relate to the idea of having a profound loss in their life. I never intended ‘Distance’ to be the very first piece of music people would hear from me, but I also thought my father would be here to celebrate its release. This is for him. I love and miss you, Pop.” - WVH

Listen to the the lyrics to this song.

Back in the late 90s Eddie used to come into a electronics store I worked at called The Good Guys. Sometimes he would bring Wolfgang. Eddie was always so cool to everyone. One time we were talking and i told him about my music and he gave me his home phone number. He told me to call him sometime to come up and do music. I was floored. I called a week later and we talked for an hour...but not about music. About personal stuff...life...he told me of his cancer. My father choked me till I blacked out, continually insulted me and humiliated me in front of others. He was as cruel and vicious and heartless to me as he could possibly be, and still thought up more. I will not miss him when he's gone. Wolf, on the other hand, had a great father who loved him and blessed him and nurtured him, and with his death Wolf is rightfully devastated. I wish you could have it both ways, but you just can't.

There’s hard days here and there but I couldn’t imagine my life without them. Folks without kids just can’t comprehend the pure joy your children bring. It’s a euphoria that transcends anything in the world. I can’t listen to this song without crying thinking one day I’ll leave earth without them. Sobering to see our childhood guitar hero/idol being a gentle loving father to his only son. Just proves that no matter who your are or become in this life, how famous or wealthy, liked or loved, no matter how influential or powerful, there is nothing that can ever take the place of the love between a parent and a child and EVH was all of those things but most importantly he was a great dad to Wolfgang. Not at all. And I'm grateful every day that I still have my parents. This song hits me in a few different ways, one is for their family, another is because my dad has always been there loving me no matter what even though I put him through hell for many years of addiction and jail. He never gave up on me.

I’m trying to hide from my wife because I’m over here ugly crying while watching a UA-cam video. As a father and a musician this hit me hard. You made an amazing tribute to an amazing father.
In the next room my 6 year old son and 3 year old daughter are asleep for the night and I just can’t wait until the morning so I can give them the biggest hug and tell them again how much I love them.
    Thank you.

He stayed at home because he didn't need to tour, he had $100 million fortune. Most people have no choice, they have to work long hours and spend little time at home so they can pay the mortgage and feed the family. That's WHY he chose to stay at home....he had nothing to prove anymore!

I'm a 53 year old father of a 4 year old beautiful little girl. I'm so glad I didn't make it off this planet without knowing what it's like to be a dad. There's no connection stronger or more enduring than a father's love. Thank you for sharing these memories. The torch has been passed and you're carrying his spirit on with a humbleness and grace about you. He's proud of you, I promise.

My dad took his life when I was 15, he was at Big Sur in CA. I was in Maryland. He served 2 tours in Vietnam as a warrant officer in the Army, flying helicopters. It was Nov 11th 1982.. the day the Vietnam memorial was dedicated.. he would've wanted me to a musician, as he didn't want me to join the military. Sometimes I feel his hand on my shoulder when I play guitar.. 45 years playing guitar is better than the nightmares that war brings. God bless you Wolfgang, and thank the powers that be for Edward giving the most incredible rock music to this rock we're living on.
