I think that's kind of the idea given the title of the video. It's the old saying in business... "you can have it fast, right or cheap... and u can only pick 2." This was fast and cheap, not necessarily "right" according to pro-roofers. BUT, for a homeowner w a bad leak who is desperate for a fast & inexpensive solution (that doesn't necessarily need to last 10 years) this video is semi-helpful. I don't even have $2 to spend per square foot so I'm totally screwed. Then i want to tape the seams with EPDM tape and coat the entire surface with expoxy resin. Then put on new perimeter flashing. I realize I'm going to create more issues but I'm stuck and SOMETHING must be done ASAP. Unless some roofers want to donate their labor AND materials, I'm on my own. Water is a sinister foe!
Sorry it was not a bad try for doing yourself but it was inproper installation. As a roofer for 25 year I'll tell you what you did wrong. Before you lay out the base you have to apply primer which some roofer call glue, the second thing you did wrong was when you installed the cap sheet you have to stagger it from the base so the laps don't land on the same spot you had to cut the first roll of cap down the middle but I would have cut was the base so I could start with a full roll of the cap the way you did it if one of the laps fail the lap underneath it could fail to because of the trapped water. I don't know where you live but if you get winter weather that will be an issue.
Your installation on the pipe is wrong you are supposed to install a cone over the pipe then put a piece of base down on the cone then put you cap on and it would be in 2 piece s so it wouldn't look like garbage you lay out a piece to pass the pipe cut around it the next piece 6 inch overlap the other way on the pipe and it's good to go and looks nice too and don't forget to use asphalt primer on the cone
Allsand is meant as a last resort of large pipes that they don't make cone inserts for not a wash room pipe and your wash room vent pipe you should have risen it up that cap comes off and you should have built it up with 2 layer of 2by4 and flash it in with your base and cap sheet it you live in an area where it snows you are going to have problems

Great video.... I see 2 problems 1: you always have to cut your first run of S A base in half alway. To prevent a lap on lap Meaning when you run your cap sheet you're gonna have a lap on top of the other lap thats not good . Cutting your first run in half prevent this . 2 : You need to use an 80 pound roller . The roller is used to remove any air pockets that may be trapped in between the materials. In the summer when its hot the gasses starts to build up in the pockets causing the material bubble up or causing the material to separate in time .
Stepping on it and not pass the roll on it is the same thing and he also didn't use primer on the roof before he installed the base sheet some roofer call it glue

Great video Roof Doctor. you have inspired me to fix my mobile home roof. I was wondering if I could buy a few minutes of your time for a video call or phone call to let you see my situation and recommend what approach to take, be it peel and stick, torch down or some other kind of approach.
@@rsz90182 Do you really need an explanation? And the list of things they fucked up is so long it can't be addressed in a comment. You would need another full length video. But for starters, in just the first 30 seconds, any time you install a roof over an existing roof you are doing it wrong.
As a 35 year roofer I have never seen such a thing in my life. But I am not a fan of recovering any roof. Any one who has tore off two or more layer's of roofing know's what is going on with the roof under the top one. Old roof continues to decompose, witch takes away from the life of the new installed roof. Even if a recover board it put down. And at min and install some one way vaper vents, so hot condensated air can escape.

You give a warranty on that work? Been roofing all my life, that is a easy roof to install, that's facts,,it's just not the best flat roof system to install on that building,it's one of the worst in my opinion..tpo,,epmd,even hot tar is better than that peel in stick...with that roof having walls going down both sides like that & all the penitrations coming through the roof,I would of went with epdm or tpo just my opinion,,using a sealant for flashing is only temporary...
Do u have a list of everything u used and where u possibly bought everything u used. I live in Pennsylvania and am not sure where to buy everything we need and need to know how to extend our roof out to add gutters to our lower deck
Hi, my name is Vick, I leave in North East Maryland, I have a flat roof with TPO material, it's old and starting to lick every time when is raining, what you suggested to do ? Can I use the same materials you were using on this video ? What should I do with the existing TPO ? Can I install on top of that or I have to pull all off ? Please let me know. Thank you so much.
According to what little you have stated it sounds likely that the roof in question should be torn off and stripped down to the deck of all old materials and any rotten plywood decking removed and replaced with new before a new roof is installed. If you have had substantial leaks then there will be moisture trapped between the old roof and the new roof (wet insulation board & rotting plywood) creating water vapor which must escape and will only cause further damage to the ceiling underneath ( stains, paint blistering, bubbling, peeling, mold) and bubbling, blistering and eventually compromising the roof above for more leaks. You could potentially use a peel & stick base sheet over a mechanically fastened 1/2"×4'x8' insulated sheet of blackboard on the deck followed by a granulated peel & stick cap sheet but the devil is in the details (i.e. penetrations (pipes, skylights, drains, tie-ins to other roof systems & perimeter terminations (i.e. shingles, metal, wall flashing & metal drip edge, etc.) and this video is not a good representation of the proper application process. My advice is to research the proven work history of licensed & bonded roofing professionals in your area and get several quotes on a peel & stick replacement roof and go from there.
What causes the granules to come off a torch down roof like that? Have a 5 yrs old roof, has lost considerable granules, they clog the scupper box which requires us to clean it out 2x a year. We are going to have to silver coat soon otherwise the roof will be too exposed to UV. It's nuts for a roof to start failing that quickly but from talking to supply house, granules coming off is becoming more and more common
What is cashier over the rubber? Water shield ? I'm in WI shop Nenards. Trying do mobile home addition with flat roof. How do I get rubber roll up on roof by myself?
Why are you laying the runs across the roof? Why no lengthways? Plus, would it not be better to have done the flat roof first, then the parapets, to achieve proper weathering?
Most roofers would get at least $100 per square which in this case would be $3200.00 for labor. Hard to imagine for 4 to 5 hours of work. Of course, workmen's compensation ins typically runs .50 cents on the dollar, so $1600.00 goes to insurance if they are licensed and insured.
Can you please send me the name of your products to see what I can get her in Mexico for a house my mother has that they keep redoing every 3 years. Please
I have a question about roofing, I have gotten several contractors over to give me estimate for replacement of the roof every last one wants to install edpm roof material over the current roof, ( old roof hot tar, last roof torch down bitumen) they all want to do only third roof of edpm . Why? Why won’t anyone remove the old roof fix the old Douglas Fir t&g decking and torch down two layers over fire resistant paper? Your demonstration of this project video is showing proof of why they don’t want to do any roof removal and repair. They can complete the entire job in one day. No old material to dispose of. No complicated process. Minor torch around the edges. Maximum return on their time. My flat roof is pitched both sides to the middle and a scupper with a drain pipe in the center. Where can I obtain the materials from your video? I’m not about to do the work myself but it’s possible with some help to complete the project in a day and complete the flashing process without worrying about complicated step flashing or anything else. Thank you.
EPDM is the worst type of roofing material do have on a roof. You are correct in all the other points. You can hire a few handy guys and have then do your roof with little cost. No need to strip the old roof.
Sometimes Home Depot will carry the Liberty Brand od Peel and Stick. But any roofing supply place carry this material. Beacon Building Supply, ABC Roofing Supply or any other local roofing supply place. The Brand does not really matter.
Reject those bids and keep requiring your specifications only ! Many regions of the country have bad contractors ! Break down the roof work scope into, tear down demo, roof repairs if any then actual new roof area if any ! Doc is right you can re-layer if needed ! Keep calling for free and sane estimates only ! Good handymen with insurance bond can do small if needed !

Great video Roof Doctor. you have inspired me to fix my mobile home roof. I was wondering if I could buy a few minutes of your time for a video call or phone call to let you see my situation and recommend what approach to take, be it peel and stick, torch down or some other kind of approach.
You really have a great wife there two people makes it so much easier working together in life
20 years old roof finish looks absolutely UV Stable
This is like a master class in how NOT to install a roof...
I so agree! But they will call us haters. I don't know what kind of Dr. he is, but surly not a roof Dr.
Not haters, just jealous couch potatoes without any explanations.
@@rsz90182 Do you really need an explanation? And the list of things they fucked up is so long it can't be addressed in a comment. You would need another full length video. But for starters, in just the first 30 seconds, any time you install a roof over an existing roof you are doing it wrong.
I like the whole process. I am in kenya how can I get this materials?. Do you have an agent
Great stuffs! Thanks Doc. Immensely enjoyed it (what about the silverly UV protectant at the end?)
And at min and install some one way vaper vents, so hot condensated air can escape.
a roofer put this on my house roof, the box said for garages & sheds..... looked crap like it wouldn't last... glad i sold the house
So the pipes can I just place boots to them for extra protection? Also where did you buy the torch?
Wonderful video. Excellent.
Many thanks!
You guys are awesome

Not everyone has a wife like yours and mine. Mine has always worked with me since we been married, we were were self employed all our life, married 50 years this year
I am so sorry
YOU HAVE 3 STARS!!!!!
I put one under where under lament should be
EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!!
Thank you for so much for sharing, my question is that you don't need to take out of the old membrane ?
Ok Alexa turn off but first say th least intelligent video you sell me more about college
Mujer trabajadora 👏👏👏
What is the underlayment/membrane you're using under that liberty roof roll?
Do u have a list of everything u used and where u possibly bought everything u used. I live in Pennsylvania and am not sure where to buy everything we need and need to know how to extend our roof out to add gutters to our lower deck
Hi, can you use this type of roofing on shed roof or do I have to use asphalt 3 shingles? Thanks
15.31 YIKES!!!! LOOK HOW CLOSE YOUR HAND IS TO THE FLAME!!!! 🔥 SO scary!
What Rubber Roof brand to you recommend?
How much does a roll weigh? Would that work for a Florida room?
What is cashier over the rubber? Water shield ? I'm in WI shop Nenards. Trying do mobile home addition with flat roof. How do I get rubber roll up on roof by myself?
I see where your son gets his good looks from. ;)
from his mother.
My knees and back hurts watching your roofing videos and I'm 43. You are a machine. How old are you? What's the secret? ha
Why are you laying the runs across the roof? Why no lengthways? Plus, would it not be better to have done the flat roof first, then the parapets, to achieve proper weathering?
Is he cooking the books? Nobody mentioned preparing roof with thorough cleaning. This guy is hiding cards up his sleeve!
I don't like your comments that is an honest holesome couple with the best financial interests of the homeowner in mind
She's a beauty. You're a lucky man.
Thank you. Where can I buy super silicon sealant?
Most roofers would get at least $100 per square which in this case would be $3200.00 for labor. Hard to imagine for 4 to 5 hours of work. Of course, workmen's compensation ins typically runs .50 cents on the dollar, so $1600.00 goes to insurance if they are licensed and insured.
Can you please send me the name of your products to see what I can get her in Mexico for a house my mother has that they keep redoing every 3 years.
Please
Great vid where can I buy that material,I'm in Florida

Will this material and system work in harsh climates with wind had snow?
Good overall but no flashing? And I say invest in a 80 lb roller and dog ear the corners on the over lap you got this doc
I just took a selfy of my flashing on the roof hang on I'm still posting the pics
Thank you for your video. You should careful not to burn down the roof, right?
Pig skiner
Very informative!
Can I use Tri Built Granular Surface Self Adhering Underlayment as a Base layer before the Torch Down ?
I do that many times and it works good
Did he remove the old roof membranes before placing the red backing pieces?
