The Straw That Broke The Camel's Back

  • After 23yrs of near constant back pain stemming from a broken vertebrae in 2001 after being hit by an ATV, I just had two artificial discs implanted in my lumbar spine. The surgery went well but the last several weeks have been some of the most miserable days I’ve ever experienced.
    With the new titanium implants, my spine’s original length has been restored; I’m 3/4” taller than I was pre-surgery. That means my spinal nerve bundle is 3/4” too short for my new (original) height. That tension on the nerves means I have constant burning sensation in my legs and currently, I’ve lost some mobility in my right foot (aka Drop Foot). Drop Foot means I can’t lift my foot upward; I can wiggle toes and push down with my foot but not pull my toes up. That requires me to wear an ankle brace to keep my foot up.
    Over the next several weeks/months, the nerves will start to lengthen and will match the new spine length. As they grow, the nerve pain should start to lessen and I should regain mobility of my right foot.
    At this time, my 2024 riding season isn’t looking great. Romaniacs in July is absolutely off the table, unfortunately.

    My drop foot after a massive accident with pelvis and leg surgery had a bleak prognosis. I realised I could move my foot in increments of millimetres, and so would sit on my bed and do only that for hrs every day. For 3-6 months….daily..maybe 2hrs. To the neurologist’s surprise it very gradually improved. If you can move it at all, keep sending it all the signals to move. A lot of my foot is numb, but I have full control of my foot back. It took a year or two. No two situations are alike, but if there is any movement at all, it’s worth pursuing. Thinking of you, and wish you well.

    Get better soon. I hope that foot drop gets under control. Good thing it isn't the shift foot. I have a question, though, as someone that doesn't have Canadian health care. That surgery isn't being done in Canada, so you go to Germany to have it. Does that put the cost of that surgery on you? Is follow up treatment by the Canadian system covered or is that on you? Just curious.

    • @CamelADV
      @CamelADV  10 місяців тому +1

      The cost was 100% mine to pay; that was part of the reason I just got the surgery done this year. Fusion would have been covered (at some point when things got bad enough). Follow-up care here at home has been minimal; basically just doc visits for medication changes.

    I went face first into the side of a pickup truck at 50 mph in the spring of 2022. Plates, screws and torn muscles and ligaments. I got back on the bike 8 months later and rode through the pain for 6000 miles to Baja. This year was 10,000 miles of NM, CO BDR, Wy, MT, ID, WA, OR, CA, NV, UT, AZ and Mexico. Some of your videos inspired me to do that on my KTM 890R.
    I personally really appreciate you putting this video out and reminding us all that we're human beings on the other end of these mouse clicks, and that there's a community that you've contributed to, and that we care about you. I considered going to ONZ after I exploded my L4 last year but I ended up having the implant/fusion surgery done in Canada. Not sure if that was a good idea or not as the procedure went pretty horribly. As a life long motorcyclist I’m used to being broken and I know what it takes to recover but this was a whole new level. Post surgery I wasn’t sure I would ever recover. Depression set in and I thought my motorcycle life was over. After two weeks I started to walk a bit more each day until I could consistently hit 5kms. After two months I went back to the gym and began to lift light weights gradually building my strength up. Today at 11 months I recognize that I will never be the same but I’m not in much pain and I can basically live my life. I rode the Copper Canyon in March with zero issue and I’m headed to Panama in Jan 25. Good luck in your recovery.
