A friend lived in a 24 foot MiniWinnie for three years with 3 children under 10 and a new born. Their new home is debt free. Was it worth the “sacrifice”? Without a doubt. They had a plan and worked it faithfully.

My husband inherited property as a child from his grandfather. We lived with his parents on an adjoining tract for 3 years building our home. Generational homestead, so my kids can be safe outside.

My grandfather paid $12k in 1963 for his home. Current appraisal for insurance is $150k. Only been updated twice and not much! To keep up with societies perception of what homes should look like, would take $25k

The square footage and luxury of houses has gone off the rails, plus the taxes are killing people’s ability to pay the mortgage.
Yeah, property taxes are insane! I pay over $800/mo. I feel like I’m renting from the government.
That is why I left Austin, TX. Investors knock down the few normal and affordable homes, and in their place build monstrosities on the plot in order to double the property value. The city is turning into an ugly sprawling subdivision with hideous, overpriced 5,000 sqft homes that leave not an inch of grass left around the perimeter. The property tax rate is pushing 3.8% in most areas, and depending on when you took out your mortgage, there are some of the more "normal middle class" neighborhoods where the monthly property tax bill exceeds the monthly mortgage rate (principle and interest).
I think peoples' expectations for a home have become unrealistic due to TV shows like HGTV puts out. Why else would someone who brings home 80k after taxes think they can pay a mortgage on a $650k property?
I just saw a listing in my area: 1600 sq ft house, horse barn and 15 acres for only $2.5 million. The $10k monthly payment based on 20% down is way beyond what most people can pay, they would need provable income of $250k+ (probably closer to $350k) to hope to qualify.

The up side of renting a house is you have a set living expense. As an owner I have had to replace heating and air conditioning, water heater and hail damaged roof, pay insurance and raising taxes. Some years the net “income” from rental property is near zero on property with no mortgage. If the renter had been paying a mortgage instead of rent, they would have had almost doubled their planned housing expenses.
Not when you are a long-term renter. My rent nearly doubled from 2019 to 2023. The 4yrs prior to that, it had only increased 22% from 2015-2019. Did everyone's income double post-CV19? Did ANYONE'S CoL go down?

My 40-year-old dilapidated home was just tax-appraised at almost a quarter million dollars. This is in a medium-sized Texas city. I am senior on fixed income and can't afford to sell it because I couldn't find anything affordable and decent to move to. I'm terrified to file for a re-appraisal hearing, lest the city decide to condemn my home and I lose everything. So much for treating widows with compassion :-(

I was driving threw same storm to Carthage mo for a brother's cat scan one heck a storm & winds all up 49 from Arkansas to Joplin then storm stopped but still wind. I laughed when I read an article recently about how unfair it was that boomers and late GenX are in homes that are too big for their needs, and most don't want to move because their homes are paid for. So they're trying to come up with ways to convince them to downsize into smaller homes so those who want to buy that traditional 3 bedroom, 2 bath have a chance to raise their families. I'm thinking to myself, why would they want to move? They worked their lives to pay off that house and selling it now may get them some money, but the new place gets them a higher interest rate, a loan and for what?

Local grocery store had a 5.00 sale on several items, it was a fail. 5.00 ribeyes, never saw a ribeye cut so thin! Shrimp was tiny packages, better deal at dollar general everyday price.
Lowes wanted 2.75 a foot for 14-2 wire, local electrical supply had it for 40 cents a foot

It is sunny and beautiful here in coastal New Jersey , after a 30 degree night and a 58 degree day predicted for today .
P.S. - As to housing , we are seeing a glut in our rural area , of huge pinelands cleared for building of many apartments , each . The main road ( north / south ) is a TWO LANE ROAD , passing through little villages and towns . The water / sewer / schools are already stressed , with the current population . Although there are wealthy areas , especially near The Shore , the rest of us are at or well below middle class and economically stretched , as it is . Who are these units being built for ? Who can afford these "luxury" apartments ?? Not we seniors , nor the young families (who have to drive upstate or further for work)... Each township has at least one such development - mine only has a population of 45.12K and only 43.75K in the next one over .
here in Maine, it's very similar. In those buildings, 40-50% of those apartments are reserved for "newcomers", and they stay free for 2years before they are charged rent
