I know this is 3 months late, but good commentary! This song always hit home for me, not the plastic surgery part but I have always grown up feeling unattractive, worthless, being bullied etc. I still struggle with that occasionally. But I just be kind to others, work on my skills like drawing, and not focus on external looks too much even though that is so hard. I love songs like this that have a deeper meaning.

I love Melanie but nowadays I kind of disagree with this song. people shouldn't conform to the way they are, I think everything is a mentality construction. There are many things about my body that I hate that I can't change or that I can but only in the future with money, and that's why I was able to accept these things about myself. It's not about earning praise from others but from yourself. come home from the gym and admire your growth. I have one life and I'm not going to spend it having to accept a nose and a chin that I think is awful.
The song is more about being forced or pushed into doing surgery or changing yourself just to please others. Like the guy suggesting his girlfriend to do surgery even though she wasn't sure about it. Nothing wrong with changing something about you if YOU really want without pressure from others.
There’s nothing wrong with changing your body or wanting a little change to give yourself a boost of confidence but when your doing it because others want you to isn’t ok. Nowadays people will feel entitled to look as good as people want them to; not realizing that they’re being pressured into doing something that might ruin their body. (Again there’s nothing wrong with plastic surgery)
Also the girl in the video was already beautiful and didn’t need plastic surgery. The main idea of the video is even out of love; if you aren’t comfortable with changing your body, don’t let anyone pressure you into doing it
@Devin thank you for explaining the meaning of this song because I’ve seen people thinking that Melanie is shaming people of how you’re body look and in reality Melanie is explaining how social media can make people feel negative about their body and feel like they have to do certain things to please others:(.
