    Fantastic. I have put this in my "best category" of fly tying videos on youtube. No clutter to distract, all the steps are evident, good lighting and plain background. You also answered a key question with your water demo - as you were tying I thought you would have too much material on the bottom and it would spin. Count me in as a fan

    I've been away from fly tying for over 40 years and am amazed at the advances in materials. Flexible goop and UV light. Are you kidding me? That's awesome! Back in the day, if we wanted dubbing, we had to trim it from under fur and put dubbing wax on the thread, then sprinkle the under fur on the waxed thread before winding it on. So much better nowadays. Think I'll scare up my old Thompson D vice and get back to it. You do a fine job young man, and have a great talent. Best wishes.

      Thank you Jon! Yeah, things have changed. You will be amazed by the new advances in rooster capes. They have midge size that can tie to 28 size hooks, sometimes smaller. These feathers have gotten longer, more dense and all around better. Go check out some high quality capes from your local fly shop. It will blow your mind! If you have any questions I am here. :)

    I went on to fly tyers dungeon and was extremely surprised by how cheap the material is. I was curious about how much material comes in a "bag" and how much material comes in a "hank" from your experience.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 років тому +3

      Awesome man! As for many takes, it depends on what type of fish. Something super toothy might destroy it quickly. Bass, I would say 3-6 strikes, (depending on how badly they crush it). It’s an awesome little fly, but no it’s not the most durable out there. Of course it’s not terrible either on that front. I would have 1-2 in your box just for when the bass are being super picky, but it’s not my every day fisher you know? Just cause it’s hard to tie and not the most durable. Just really good for getting those bass that are being super picky. So save it for those days.

    I am so happy you mentioned Fly Tyers Dungeon! I didn't know any of the names in today's (Sept. 23rd) video and you hadn't mentioned where to get them. Just checked them out and am going to buy some of their products as soon as payday comes around. All the best, Sean. (BTW I did purchase one of those vises for my grandson. It seems to be built in such a way as to not be damaged by novice tiers. I had been told they weren't making them anymore. I guess that information was wrong. Thanks again. Sean)

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  8 років тому

      +Sean Mooney yeah the fly tiers dungeon has some great prices on their products. I think It would cost $8 or so for all the materials to make this fly with the exception of the hook and UV resin.
      The vise is a good vise. I'm not stoked about the jaws honestly. But it's not bad. It is built like a tank though like you said, and probably would survive an atomic blast. Haha

    Isn't the bullfrog dubbing a dry fly dubbing? And what color would I use for a bluegill or a baby bass imitation

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  8 років тому

      +Vlogging With Arnold I believe it is, but it has long fibers which is perfect for streamers. I always use an intermediate fly line with this fly, so it sinks down good, but it holds enough air, that the fly rides abbot above the line.
      I plan on doing a bluegill imitation on video soon, keep a lookout for the video which will show what colors to use...
      For baby bass, I don't fish that often, so I've never tied one. Not sure 100% what color pattern would be best. I'll think about it and get back to you. My guess would be some type of dark green and white...

    Awesome fly and great video, is there any tips of how to cure the smell after using the UV Resin as I have found it takes many days for the stink to go away, all the best Pete from Scotland.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  8 років тому

      +peter buckley I never notice a stink when using it. Slight plastic type smell when coming out of the tube (barely any actually) and I don't notice any after it's cured with the UV light... not sure if the fish do though, they might have a better sniffer then me. However I do catch fish with it so either the smell is not there, or the fish don't care?

      do you have a video that describes what brand vise, and other hardware you use,, i couldnt find it

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому +1

      I did a review on the vice I used here on this video which was an Anvil Atlas. However I have since replaced my vice with a Renzetti (I plan on doing a review on that as well). But any of the name brand vices are usually great quality and will serve you well for a long wile. Just make sure everyone that reviews whatever vice you get say that the jaws are good quality. The most important thing with a vice is the Jaws. The rest is just prefference/luxury.
      For my bobbin, I use a "rite bobbin" which are kinda pricy. If you are getting into tying, that really isn't needed. If you do need to purchase a bobbin, I highly recommend a ceramic tip bobbin, or a teflon coated one (so the thread doesn't get frayed). However, don't use those for wire, always use a super cheap bobbin for wire as wire will cut the teflon.
      For scissors, I recommend a quality scissor. Dr. Slick makes quality stuff for not too much money $15-20 will get you good scissors. However there are some cheaper brands that produce decent scissors, but some just stink. A bad quality scissor can make tying frustrating.
      For a whip finisher, I like using the matarelli style. But there are other ones out there and thats just based on preference. Or watch some video's on hand whip finishing if you want to save money. If you want to get the tool, then make sure its of a decent quality. Again, Dr. Slick makes a very good quality one for not too much money.
      its also good to have a bodkin (basically a needle with a handle). You could even just have a needle with you and that could work. Many people make their own with a sewing needle and glue it into a piece of wood. But, you can pick them up for $5 or so. These don't have to be high quality, so a cheap one is fine. Just used to spread out cement, or to pick out your flies.
      If your tying streamers, a stiff bristle toothbrush is handy.
      To help thread your bobbin with your thread, then a bobbin threader is handy as well. You can get these pretty cheap also.
      With all the above, you could tie 90-95% of flies out there without any other tools. You can worry about getting other ones later when you come across a pattern that a specific tool will help. For instance, many people get a parachute post holder for tying parachute's on flies like a parachute adams etc... But again, start small, don't spend a ton of money, then get what you need later for specific patterns.

    As I was watching the fish and fly photo giveaway I HAD to check out that nice little streamer u should. Haven’t missed many videos of yours but this must’ve. Anyway,8 spent my first $50 at FTD and it was well with it. Overall it dubbing what do I recommend to be the best almost like laser dub or just the best for long fibers and biggest thing, for dubbing heads on streamers, it looks like bull frawg looks the best for dubbing heads but I know you also talk about Arctic wind and a few others. Thanks

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 років тому

      Yeah arctic wind is good, but it’s thinner... like it doesn’t bulk up as much for the same amount (weight) of materials. Bull frawg is a dry fly dubbing technically so it’s really light and doesn’t seem to over saturate with water, keeping it easy to cast. However being a dry fly, you must use some type of weight to get it down.
      I like naturals for dubbing heads as well, and also “sculpin wool” seems to work well also.

      I stay away from bead heads, when I can. I tie lots of sculpin patterns for smallmouth, browns and steelhead. I do not like the action of the bead head. It does not swing or swim in a realistic manner. But, that's just me. I do weight my streamers more than most fly tyers. Lead wrap wire would be good on this fly. I usually position it on the back half of the smaller streamers. It gives it a more correct swim. Thanks for the tip. Keep up the great videos!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  8 років тому +1

      Yeah, I know what you mean. Sometimes I do like the jigging action that a head weighted fly offers though. I think it just depends on the situation.
      I just tied up a sculpin pattern, but it does have a cone head for extra weight. I uploaded the video already, but it will be available the 25th on youtube. I upload one video a week on fridays at 1:00. I have one uploading today, which is a shrimp pattern, then the sculpin. They are fun to tie, I like the fatter head flies for some reason.

    Where can I buy a fly kit

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 років тому

      I’m working at making a video on how to start fly tying. It will show what to piece together. I’d recommend getting the items individually as many fly kits offer some low quality and sometimes unusable tools

    Tied this straight into the top of a tree first cast. Devastated

      +Bass Knuckles kid yeah I'm sure it can be done. I haven't tried before but I'm sure it can be. I'll look into the pattern and see if o can't come up with the right pattern at one point.

      Well, give it a try. Buy the right colors of the same materials. I am guessing white under body, with a gray top. Maybe even a medium gray to a dark gray. Then put a dot with a sharpie for the shad dot. Actually take a look at my "mullet" pattern of this fly. It should be the next one on my play list. Its close, only has a black back. Maybe just don't use the black, make it gray instead. Everything else would be the same.

      @McFlyAngler  6 років тому +1

      It works man! Just tough to tie. It takes a while, so you probably won’t ever see anything like it in Fly shops, they can’t make money on selling them because they take a half hour + to tie.

      Hey, yeah nice. If your new to fly tying, this probably is not the fly for you. It’s quite complicated. Not saying you shouldn’t try it, but there are other flies better suited to new tiers. Good luck! Everything needed to tie each of the flies is in the description section of my videos.
