"Daddy made whiskey, And he made it well. Cost two dollars, And it burned like hell. I cut hickory just to fire the still, Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill." One of my all time favorite lyric.
The song & lyrics were written by Jerry Garcia's writing partner Robert Hunter. This is classic Hunter talking about a period in American history that most rock bands would never touch on. It's basically about a family living in northern California when "the Wall" falls, being Wall Street and the beginning of the Depression. Also, being prohibition, the father goes into distilling bootleg whiskey to help bring money into the family. The story is told through the eyes of the youngest son in the family and shows how people and systems beyond their control can ruin their once happy lives. At least that's how I've always seen the song. Anyway...More Dead!
Now that you’ve listened and reacted to this version, go and seek out the 5/8/77 Brown Eyed Women. It actually will blow your mind. The sound is unbelievable. It’s a completey different song.
Teez, here is the link to the version I mentioned in my comments. You don’t have to react to it, but if you really liked the version you posted this one will blow you away. ua-cam.com/video/gdvY6BiPPhE/v-deo.html
love this song, for me its so nostalgic, reminds me of my grandparents, married in 1921 on the southern kentucky border and moved north to indiana in the 20s , grandma had 8 boys and 3 girls, this just reminds me so much of that era.
The picture on the cover of this album is called "Ice Cream Kid". On the back side is a picture called "Rainbow Foot". I played the heck out of this album in the '70's. Nice reaction.
My favorite GD lineup. Pig Pen on the organ and doing his bluesy numbers, Keith straight killing the piano, and just Billy on drums. Those years of just Billy by himself, he can really dig in and play that jazz style so much better than sharing the kit. One of my fav dead songs too. 4-2-73 in Boston is my fav of that song.
These are live recordings and they’re not. The band built a stage when they got back to the states and re-recorded parts of the live recordings wherever their playing was kind of crappy so it’s a live recording and it isn’t.
Beautiful story told by a master storyteller!! This was actually the other 1 I was going to request, look forward to seeing if ya like my second choice
baby wants to listen to Grateful Dead too. so many amazing songs to choose from with Grateful Dead. Check out Wharf Rat ua-cam.com/video/l_pH-RWHLyo/v-deo.html
don't know much about the Dead, apart from them having a real dedicated fan base, and the fact they have massive catalogue. any time I hear a track like this I always think that I need to hear some more. anyone suggest a decent cd comp ?
Congratulations on not actually reacting to the song. You have to realize that people love this. And for some really odd reason people are asking you to react to it. Not to mention paying you to do it. You did nothing. You listened but definitely didn’t hear it
A sad depression era song. Take up the yokes and plow the fields around. So picturesque, great storytelling.
"Daddy made whiskey,
And he made it well.
Cost two dollars,
And it burned like hell.
I cut hickory just to fire the still,
Drink down a bottle and be ready to kill."
One of my all time favorite lyric.
I swear I was about to say the same thing! Good call
Robert Hunter the GD Lyricists on Jerry’s Songs , Jerry Barlow on many Bob Weirs Songs
One of the best versions of this song. This whole album is great.
Europe ‘72 is both the tour and the live 3LP Record. The greatest album of all time!
Good choice, one of their best.
Europe 72 was an album, recorded live on tour... one of my favorite Dead albums.
One of their best songs

You pretty much nailed it.
Great surmise.
No hickory in Northern Ca. and the traditional moonshine regions were in the South and mountain regions of the Eastern U.S.
Thanks, I am deaf and historically illiterate. Thank God you can decipher these heiroglyphics for us.

I also thank you! Very cool version!
03-10-81 MSG Amazing Brown Eyed Women. Rockin guitar solo. Total rock-n roll bluegrass pickin' on the electric guitar.
For myself '72 and '77-78 were the peak years for the Dead. Europe '72 (Vol. 1 & 2) are recordings from their tour in 1972.
Yeah, depending on the days, my fav years are 69, 72, 74 and 77. Can't go wrong with those.
Nothing against Mickey. But solo drummer Dead was one of my favorite periods.

Great song.
Bangers tonight after a manic Monday. Yip evening here. Thanks Teez. 😀
Europe '72 was both a tour and an album, a twofer. There is a lot of beef on that album, no filler. Nice Lava Lamp! Nug down.

The Europe '72 tour is actually quite a good place to start in my opinion. That's from their more mellow, countryish period
