  • Gregory Scarpa was a Colombo Crime Family Mobster who was an FBI informant for 30 years. But his lengthy Mafia career was nearly cut short in 1973 when Charlie Moose Panarella confronted him about working with the authorities.
This American Mafia Video takes a look at Mafia History and explores the early career of Greg Scarpa and the events around his mob colleagues being suspicious of him in the early 1970's.
This Mafia documentary features Cosa Nostra mobsters such as Neil Dellacroce, Carmine Persico, Carlo Gambino, Funzi Tieri, Charles Panarella, Joe Colombo, Crazy Joe Gallo, Larry Gallo, Joe Profaci, Vito Genovese and many more

Scarpa would go on year long benders of hard boozing and got bloated, then in the later 70’s/80’s he was a powder cocaine user and Valium popper!
Similar to Roy DeMao… when you have secrets and living at minimum 3-4 different lives stress and anxiety can do crazy things to you physically….
Just think of the mental state he must have been in daily, with the FBI Persico faction, Charlie Moose and unmentioned Sonny Franzese all coming at you for multiple reasons… it was Scarpa who ratted Sonny out due to his jealousy and relationship Sonny had with Joe Columbo and then later Carmine Persico.

Greg Scarpa Sr. is probably one of the most interesting mafioso Ive ever heard about. Definitely one of my top favorites. Absolutely FEARLESS! I mean, to have someone like Carlie Moose question you about being an informant, and not either leaving the country, or going into witness protection, shows the sheer balls the guy had. He wasn't just some knuckle dragger, the man was a criminal mastermind. Had the FBI look out for him on heists, and hits. He used them to manipulate the game however he sees fit. Yes he was an informant, but I feel like he used them just as much as they used him. The book Deal With The Devil explains it perfectly. He was a true Machiavellian.

It was always amazing to me that Scarpa got away with it for long as he did. There were other mobsters who were killed pretty quickly after being suspected of being informants, And they weren't even guilty.. The Persicos knew Scarpa was bad but still, he managed to survive. Greg Scarpa was an enigma..he was outdoing what what many informants were doing today back then! Always great information OC and have a great weekend my man.

One thing's for sure, and I've said this before, anyone in that life can be taken out. Greg Scarpa, Charlie Panarella etc etc. We talk about how vicious some of these guys like them are, but as history has borne out, none of them are immune from being killed. On another note specific to Scarpa's role as a CI, Larry Mazza has claimed that both Carmine Persico and his son Allie Boy both knew for at least 20 years that Scarpa was bad. If that is true, then the question immediately becomes, "why did they let it go for so long?" Remember, it's also recently been claimed that Carmine Persico was listed as a CI back in 1971. Michael Franzese has addressed that himself. I have a theory that the Feds have been turning a blind eye even to murders in that life so long as they're murdering each other. Likely been going on for far longer than we are currently aware of.

Part of the deal is that the FBI gave him a lot of money to throw around as a shark. Enough, in fact, that he was known to charge a lower vig to help other sharks. All so that the Bureau had a very good idea of who was heavily in debt to whom to figure out how to get them to cooperate.

Not when you look at the body count, he was amassing. He was good at killing and I am sure at some point he realized, the more guys he smoked, the more feared he would be, the less likely anyone one would have the balls to challenge him. Scarpa, Luciano, Castellano all flirted with the feds. And, at some point how can you not, no matter how big you think you are, you can't be more powerful the American Government. A fact John Gotti never understood. Men like Scarpa, let you know that the term "rat' really is more of an indictment of your lack of power, within the organization, than the status of your loyalty. Really powerful guys have their cake and eat it too.

I had heard a story told by Sammy the Bull that in one case (If I recall the story correctly) Scarpa had behaved badly in a Gambino Family connected Bar-Nightclub and that his actions were serious enough that it could have been denmanded by the Gambino that Scarps be whacked, Sammy mentioned that Scarpa was given a pass..quite possibly at the recommendation of Sammy himself. I don't know why Greg was not X'd, but I guess Greg proved more beneficial to the family than costly. I must assume that the Persico's and Scarpa had some sort of understanding. Scarpa could have easily been killed at any time despite his deadly nature. He was not killed.

IMO, “there’s levels to this thing.” There are racketeers, such great earners that they’re not “risked” by giving them a contract to perform any rough stuff. Then you have the “balanced” ones that are equally capable of generating money and cracking heads as needed. And then you have the stone cold killers, actually better at whacking guys out than making money. Michael Franzese IMO is a great example of the first group. Sammy Gravano, a great example of the second. As for the third, put Greg Scarpa in there with Roy DeMeo, Tommy Pitera, Albert Anastasia and Mad Sam DeStefano…my possibly counterfeit two cents, anyway.

I somehow missed this one when it came out. Panarella was a genuinely scary guy and no doubt Scarpa was worried. Someone online put me onto some of the FBI docs on Scarpa and I've been reading them. There were 2 Colombo made guys who disappeared and presumably killed in late 1969 that Scarpa reported to the FBI about. Salvatore D'Ambrosio and Freddie "Red" Delucia. Reading that section, I caught a lie by Scarpa to the FBI about those cases. Scarpa told the FBI that the 2 Colombo guys were likely killed because they had done unsanctioned hits on 2 Bonanno guys, Frankie Mari and Mike Adamo. That as absolutely not true. Mari and Adamo were killed by the Bonanno's themselves because they were trying to remove Sciacca as boss. That lie by Scarpa makes me wonder if he was involved in killing D'Ambrosio and Delucia at Joe Colombo's behest. I say this because in a previous document dated 1/6/1969, Scarpa had told the FBI that Joe Colombo had summoned him regarding 2 Colombo members(names redacted) who had apparently gone on a rampage of sorts and murdered 3 non Mafia related people in November 1968 including a young soldier returned home from Vietnam. The soldier's father was friends with Genovese Capo Toddo Marino and wanted vengeance. It was obvious to me the redacted names were in fact likely D'Ambrosio and Delucia. Scarpa told FBI in January '69 that Colombo said "they must be killed" and thought Colombo might call on him to do the job. So a year later Scarpa lies in telling the FBI that they were taken out for killing Mari and Adamo? That alone leads me to believe he was covering for his involvement in their disappearance and murder. Sorry for the long post but when I read what Scarpa told the FBI in early 1970, I referred back to what he had said in Jan 6 1969 report to them and realized he was lying in 1970. So far as I know, the murders of D'Ambrosio and Delucia were never solved.
