As the son of a former hairdresser and someone who's obsessed with vintage hairstyling, it's actually the best tip sadly enough, most of what makes those styles look right is a mix of having the right haircut with an appropriate perm, a proper wet set and a skillful comb through, if any or several of these is not achieve the style won't last as well and will always look "somehow too modern, but you can't put you finger on why"
My grandmother would go to the hairdresser once a week, wash, set, and style. Then she would maintain that look until she went to her hairdresser again. Every Thursday. ❤
The answer to the question on ALL of your minds is at 12:52 ;) Also, curly haired friends - Visit The Glambassador and Miss Tammi Savoy for curly hair styling tips! Both have VERY curly hair and do amazing vintage wetsets, updos, and more! My next 1950s housewife video is an EXCITING one (I think, anyway!) I'm sorry this video is SO long, but this is about the shortest I could cut it so here we are lol. I linked a few products in the description that I use or would use for brush outs! xoxo
I cant tell you how valuable your videos are. I love how much you emphasise "Ive tried so many times...this is what finally worked". I will keep trying. Im so not a makeup and hair girl. I will try the flat beer thing.
You look FABULOUS. Both my grandmothers wore their hair very similar to what you've styled today. I never imagined it to be so much work, but yes they had what seemed like THOUSANDS of bobby-pins. Also, I ADORE the music you play from intro to the end. Wow. A true throwback. Job well done young lady ❤️
Haha SO many bobby pins. Honestly, it's only about 20 minutes of work on hair setting day and then another 20 brushing it out, so it doesn't seem like that much to do! But it takes getting used to! And thank you! I love that song - it reminds me of my grandma!
Your hair looks fabulous! Have you tried a homemade sugar water setting lotion? My Nana used that for her wet set and she used it on my hair when I was a kid. There are recipes here on UA-cam. It works great. ✌️💕
Thank You So Much For Your Videos. I just found it, and will catch up on all your videos. You did a great job on the hair, Looks so awesome. I'm going to try it. Blessings to you and your family. Love to all.
I've found the best way I can do the back is to brush the hair really thoroughly and pull it all out almost to the ends and just brush the bottom inch or so around my hand and then it all bounces up evenly. (also watched this while pincurling my hair, felt very seen)
It was helpful to see the whole routine. I remember my mother using pin curls to set our hair for church, or holidays (1950’s & 60’s).I don’t remember her using beer. I think she just wet it with water. Your hair came out beautifully. I’m going to try using beer. Thanks for sharing.
I'm one of those natural curly haired lady's.... So thanks for the other listing in your comments about some others to check out . I love your videos. Thanks so much for this ! The back looked fantastic btw
Back in the day, those were called, pin curls, go figure. Mom would make the sides of my hair, by my ear, where the hair was short, and they were SPIT curls. You can imagine why they were called that. Flat beer was the method of the day, and less expensive then the mousses we now have. I decided several years ago, to cut my hair in a "pixy" short, wash and wear.
I love this video!!!! I’ve tried a few times, still have to practice lol My parents and grandmother absolutely love when I curl my hair! ❤️ Love your happiness!!!!
Go to Christine Cochrum aka The Glambassador! You absolutely CAN (I mean, if you want to!)! She has extremely helpful and detailed videos on how she sets her extremely curly hair. Also, Miss Tammi Savoy is a black creator and has curly hair and still does vintage styles!
30 min video ❤️ yes!! (I shaved my head a few months ago) so I have a very curl pixie and I can not wait to have hair long enough to re create this hair!
Back in my teens and 20 my hair would curl with hot rollers and curling irons beautifully then i turned 30 and I started to get naturally curly hair that I could just pin curl and it would look amazing. Then I turned 40 and nothing worked except straight and I wanted to cry. I do know that my Grandmother used beer for something but she never said what and she passed away before I though to ask so i was trying to use it as a rinse. But mystery is solved. I know that it will take time to retrain my hair and it will be easier with time. However I will be using flat beer to set the curls caz i have been looking for setting lotion or spray that my Mother used on my hair in the 70s when she would rag curl my pin straight hair into Shirley Temple curls. And I can't find what I have been looking for. I am almost willing to bet that she was reusing an old bottle ( it was from the 50s early 60s and hot pink) with stale beer in it. She wouldn't of told me what it was even if I had thought to ask since I was under 7 years old. After that I was obsessed with braids and wanted hair to the floor so i could braid it and wrap it around my head like the cellist who played at church who was in her 90s. And i still think it would be amazing to have such thickness in my older age and past my feet.
I love the outcome and the whole episode but OMG the music in this video is amazing! I used to try different methods and styles for vintage hair but since I recovered from covid I'm afraid to. I lose hair so much that I'm really scared of brushing normally, not even thinging about curls brushout... :(
My sister and i were talking about hairstyles we had as kids in the 50s and 60s, and mom and grandmas hair. Both mom and grandma would go to the hairdresser once a week. It was an all day event, well ,ind of, for ladies who worked outside the home. They wluld have a brush out, wash, cut, set and style. At night they would put toilet paper all around their hair, then put a snood, like a mesh scarf hair net, over that. It must have been hard to sleep cuz i dont think they could really turn much. Moms head would get itchy and she would use the end of a rat tail comb to scratch her head. That would drive me nuts.
Hehe I answered this at 12:52! Just added chapters so it's easier to find but in short: no, it doesn't! It only smells while you're spraying it, otherwise it dries down and your hair will smell like your shampoo.
You can try other curling methods like foam rollers or, my personal favorite, pillow rollers. Much more comfortable! But I have a tough head and I’m used to sleeping on these things.
I am just starting out doing vintage hair and set it one night with setting lotion and a bunch of my hair broke off 😩 So maybe beer would be a better option for me!
Oh NO! That's super discouraging! I would definitely start with the most gentle things first - water, pillow rollers, pins, etc; foam rollers are generally pretty good but you have to make sure your ends don't tangle or twist.
Hahaha I answered this in the video! Just added chapters so that anyone wondering can see/skip to that portion but in short: no. It smells ONLY when it's damp, after that your hair just smells like shampoo.
The biggest issue I have when I set my hair is that i have long hair and as soon as I start brushing all the curls just go away....I've tried water and foaming wrap stuff...I've tried leaving them in for a day and a half before taking them out....I just can't get it...and I want it so much!!!
Hmmm, how much hair are you curling in each curler? It could be they're too loose? I know a lot of my long-haired friends have to use a LOT of curlers with minimal hair in each in order to get a set that stays.
@@WithLoveKristina I might try that..I only do about an inch to 1&1/2 per roller..I run the brush through twice and the curl is just gone like the wind😹they're tight but not too tight when I roll them...I've used the foam rollers and done regular pin curls in some spots just to see what works better and I have the same outcome with both
Officer: ma'am, have you been doing? Ms. Eyre be sir, I used it to fix my hair, it's a vintage recipe, waste not, want not! Officer:ma'am, you need to blow a tube
I asked my nanny about her hair in the 50's ...her only tip...a good hairdresser cuz I honestly have no idea. Love that old woman with everything
HAHAHA! I mean, she's not wrong...
