  • Should we change the way we consume goods? Lucia Gonzales Schuett spent one year without buying any goods, besides food, and shares the journey she went through. Lucia Gonzalez Schuett was born in Barcelona but moved to a tiny rural community in southern Spain while she was still a child: her father had made an abrupt career change to follow the family’s farming tradition, and they were all of a sudden harvesting cork and managing cattle on horseback. She believes that growing up in a small town had a tremendous influence on her, and that being so close to nature helped her develop the balanced and healthy lifestyle she so much treasures today.
Lucia graduated in Translation and Interpretation in Madrid. After working in different areas related to communication (EU institutions, financial services, education), she radically altered her career path joining a Spanish multinational fast-fashion company in Germany. She recently graduated with an MBA from HEC Paris and is pursuing new opportunities in a field very close to her heart: Sustainability. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

i'm very proud to say "no buying" has been my yearly resolution since 2018. It's not perfect but my "wants" shopping has decreased a lot

This is my 2021 resolution, and of course to read more and more books. 😀😀

I started downsizing during the 2008 economic crisis and when hurricane Sandy happened in 2012 I moved to NY/NJ as a disaster volunteer (I recommend disaster volunteerism to everyone as a wonderful way to remind us to appreciate everything and that happiness comes from giving, especially when the need is great). Later I moved to México following hurricane Patricia and have been living out of a carry-on suitcase since, feeling more free than ever! I don't even aspire to own anything. The less I consume, the more I can be giving to others. :D

The dystopia novel “A brave new World”, had a saying ‘Rend, don’t mend.” So that factories keep humming.

I have always bought used as much as possible, and repair & mend as much as possible. Keep appliances over 10+ years & only replace when they fully die. Keep shoes going for many years.

It's hard to believe how supposedly 'savvy' people are so easily persuaded to buy things they don't need. Fashion comes into everything - but the only real purpose of fashion...is business!

I had a huge problem with CDs, DVDs, and books. Stacks and stacks are still new and in shrink wrap. 😢

Buying nothing but food for a year? I guess a bidet is on the cards before embarking on that ;-).

Unfortunately that's the sad reality of appliances. There is now one appliances repair person per city it seems. Don't even get me started on 3000 dollar refrigerators that have a touch screen on the front, ice maker, etc. Yet the compressor won't make it five years! 🙄

I'd like to lease 1 years supply of toilet paper, please! Call me in a year and I'll have it all for you still. Slightly used of course. :) Also, house paint, plant soil, pens and pencils and other art supplies, and soap and shampoo. We're good on me leasing all that from you right? Awesome. Good to know.

UA-camrs that show their 500 pairs of sneakers on a wall make me sick. This is terrible for the environment and just plain wasteful.

Interesante.
