What’s most comical is his lack of self-awareness. Much like umpires, broadcasters are not central to the game; they need remain in the background. Baseball fans couldn’t care less if Michael Kay was the Yankees’ announcer, no less than we would care if the guy behind the plate calling balls and strikes was Angel Hernandez…. Check that; if it was anyone other than Angel Hernandez behind the plate. 😅
This is kind of the core "issue" to me. If it was just for this series I sort of agree with his point. If it just is what they always do and this happens to be the subway series. This is stupid.

Mets broadcast is awesome. Funny, informative, honest. They call out the team when they’re bad and you can tell they know the game

The Mets broadcasting team is second only to the glory NESN Red Sox days of Don Orsillo and Jerry Remy. Keep in mind, I’m a Sox fan. In my mind, no one beats Don and Jerry, but the guys at SNY are close.

I don’t see how you can compare them. Mets broadcast is fun, so is the Yankees, but I really appreciate how good of a broadcaster of baseball MK is. He has the best calls and enthusiasm.
I loved Phil, Bill, and Frank, later Fran when they did Yankees games. And let's face it, from 1976-1983 watching the Mets was a chore and the Yanks owned baseball in NYC. But now I would rather call my mother-in-law than watch a Yankees broadcast, even though they have 2 of the best players in MLB.
GKR have chemistry, been together 19 years and it’s the same three guys every night. The Yankees have Kay with, Cone or Al Leiter or Paul O’Neill or Jeff Nelson or John Flaherty or Lou Piniella or Joe Girardi or David Justice or Tino Martinez or Cameron Maybin or Carlos Beltran
As a listener of the Kay Show, he is petty and childish and it’s hilarious. He’s almost like a Larry David type character. I love it

I was a Boston Red Sox fan living the New York metro area from the mid 80s until the early 2000s and Michael Kay's Yankee homerism was legendary. He's said things like- "Pedro Martinez isn't an Ace and should never be on an All-Star team", "Derek Jeter is the greatest shortstop in MLB history", "Roger Clemens is the type of person I'd never want on my ball club"... until Clemens became a Yankee. His signature homer call, which goes something like "It is far! It is blah! ... SEE YA!" is maybe the worst in MLB history..

Followed him around times square into a xxx theater then wrote an embarrassing newspaper article about it right before the game. The Yankees went on to win the game. George Steinbrener liked it so much he gave Michael Kay a job with the Yankees.

In fairness, compared to the Mets booth ALL announcers are bad. Cohen, Darling, and Hernandez are easily the best of all teams. And I say that as an NL west fan who generally roots against big market NYC teams like the mets.
They just understand the game more. They will respecfully criticise criticise their own players or front office if they deserve it, and they will also respectfully applaud any good plays from the opposition. And of course they have a deep understanding of what being an MLB player is actually like compared to most announcers cause...you know. They were lol.
They are fair and well informed, and really quite entertaining as well. More teams broadcasters should be like them.

I don't have an opinion about today's Braves broadcast team but I spent a lot of time watching the Braves in the 80s on TBS and their broadcasters were excellent.
I used to listen to the Michael Kay show years ago. He's had way bigger blowups than this. You'd never realize the other side of his personality from just watching games, this is tame for him. He really is focused on getting as high of ratings for his radio show in an embarrassing way.
Baseball is competitive. I want YES to think the Yankees are number one and SNY to think the Mets are number one. If you're part of an organization you gotta be all about your team and I think we all have a bit of wiggle room for our own team's booth being a bit biased at times

I don’t think so. what’s the positive outcome for Kay and YES in that scenario? Yankees fans watch YES and Mets fans watch SNY. if anything, this will just convince neutral viewers to turn on SNY as opposed to YES for the rivalry games.

@@Legnerps They dumped him because they were getting low ratings and somehow thought it was Orsillo/Remy's fault. Couldn't have been that the team sucked or anything, but those 2 were an absolute pleasure to watch. I am a Red Sox fan though and hate the Yankees, but Michael is a fantastic announcer as well and have enjoyed listening to him throughout the years.
Don is awesome with Mark Grant calling Padres games. They are hilarious and it's a fun broadcast with a great vibe. I really miss Jerry Remy, I loved him and I'm no Red Sox fan but he was a special person whose kind demeanor really came out in his announcing. Eck was also great I miss him too.

To be fair to Michael Kaye, he may not have been aware that the Mets call everything of theirs the best in baseball. The best booth, the best mascot, etc... Like Mike's co-host said, they feel their way. Is it even remotely true? Not even close. It's a great way to create engagement with the brand.
For years I said that if the Cardinals didn't have the booth they had, I'd want the Mets' announcers. If there's a better booth, I haven't seen enough of their games to judge. That said, I do feel a smidge of sympathy for Kay on this.
The format of the show is for the hosts to argue with each other. Listen for 5 minutes and you’ll watch them argue over the most banal things like it’s life or death. It’s not about logic it’s about reactions

Mets broadcast team is low key hilarious. Im not a Mets fan but Ive watched a couple games and I found them really entertaining. They joke a lot, dont take anything super seriously. And they're honest. Im just down with their vibe. Kay is being way too sensitive here.

I like Michael and I'd be OK if he played this as a fun feud (that would be smart). I think it's clever that the Mets crew ran a commercial on the voice of the Yankees crew's show. That's called proper trolling. Michael needs to lighten up a bit. Life is too short to take such insignificant things so seriously.

This isn't about announcing. This was his radio show. In game he doesn't do this. He's a very good announcer, who was made to look great when partnered with Bobby Murcer and Ken Singleton. But he's still very good at what he does.

I'm a lifelong Yankee fan who started listening to Michael Kay call games (with John Sterling) around 1995, so I have a good amount of nostalgia listening to him. That said, I can't honestly disagree with this video - he is rather immature, or at least overly focused on himself.

umm this was a completely normal, calm and proportional response to an ad that was either direct trolling of him or a result of an incompetent ad/marketing team at SNY... there is literally no excuse for that, no matter how small a slight you perceive it to be it should have never happened in the first place... and my man didnt even say anything remotely wrong or controversial here, he handled it like a pro,,, never even came close to crossing a line of any kind
