  • Dr. Kate Truitt begins by helping us to understand trauma by explaining how our brain has developed.
She begins by explaining the functions of the triune brain, which although it is a dated process, can help us to understand how our brain was developed. The first brain is the lizard brain, which focuses on basic primal functions for staying alive. Wrapped around the lizard brain is the mammalian brain, which focuses on our emotional experiences and how we attach and create bonds. Around the mammalian brain is the monkey brain, where we get into our higher order processes. Wrapped around all of that is our human brain which defines who we are.
One of the first senses to come on board is touch, which develops in the first trimester in the womb. Amy the Amygdala came on board the same time that vertebrates did, and she plays a critical role in helping us to stay alice and feel our feeling states. Most recently, about 300,000-70,000 years ago, our thinking brain started to evolve and play a role.
Thus, when thinking about trauma, Amy and touch are there from the beginning. Our thinking brain isn’t considered mature until our late twenties/early thirties.
