  • In which John Green teaches you about American women in the Progressive Era and, well, the progress they made. So the big deal is, of course, the right to vote women gained when the 19th amendment was passed and ratified. But women made a lot of other gains in the 30 years between 1890 and 1920. More women joined the workforce, they acquired lots of other legal rights related to property, and they also became key consumers in the industrial economy. Women also continued to play a vital role in reform movements. Sadly, they got Prohibition enacted in the US, but they did a lot of good stuff, too. The field of social work emerged as women like Jane Addams created settlement houses to assist immigrants in their integration into the United States. Women also began to work to make birth control widely available. You'll learn about famous reformers and activists like Alice Paul, Margaret Sanger, and Emma Goldman, among others.

    I'm not sure if I missed this in the video, but it's worth pointing out that the main reason women wanted men to stop drinking wasn't because of being like prude or chast, it was because with alcoholism comes irresponsibility and domestic violence. It wasn't that they wanted to get rid of alcohol per say, they wanted to make their communities and their homes safer and more stable and I feel like this important point is over glossed over. Even today in communities where alcoholism is rampant there are higher rates of domestic violence.

      @@JenniferGonzalez-gx5qv Yes, but today, most people do not see women as things any more than they see men as things. Which is good.
      That's why I find this man's condescending preaching annoying. It presumes men, in general, are sexist and need to be preached to by people like him. He made no effort to qualify his statements.
      Imagine if he directed a similar criticism at women by declaring: "stop gold-digging and stop gossiping". He would be misrepresenting women in general while at the same time preaching to them to be more like him. He would be condemned as a sexist.
      But, men are an easier target for virtue signalers these days. Just say something bad about men (it can even be false or inaccurate) and you immediately get moral points in liberal circles. Maybe, he will at some point find the courage, and intellectual accuracy, to make a habit of saying positive things about men too.

      @@sgt7 Seriously my eyes have rolled so far back into my skull I doubt they will ever return to normal. He is, you know, talking about a hundred years ago when men were overwhelmingly sexist, so I'm not sure what your point is to bring up men today. Would you like to try actually defining what 'in general' is? 20%, 40%. In general meaning all aspects of life but just portions of it. You could also define 'liberal'. What does that mean? And what is 'virtue signalling'? By the way, women can also be sexist, I think you've demonstrated that admirably.

      Me too, and I was planning to post that, until I saw your response. I think that the video glosses over differences of race and class under a “woman” tent. Also, the temperance movement was in response to high rates of alcoholism and domestic abuse that all an all male electorate refused to address. I hate it when historians don’t address this, making the women involved seem like simplistic idiots.

      Our culture has a way of only focusing on racism when it's convenient for leftists. This is one of those cases where it's not, because if they bring it up they will have to admit that some of the people whom they view as heroes of women's rights were actually despicable people, and that some of the things that they parade around and support are actually gross human rights violations! "They began a hunger strike and had to be force fed." Kind of underplays what was happening, they didn't have to be force fed they were force fed, which involved strapping them into chairs and forcing tubes down their throats then pouring milk, and raw eggs down the tubes (and hopefully not into their lungs where the tubes sometimes ended up). The article also omits quite a bit about the violence the women suffered from the male prison guards and police officers (beatings and worse).

    I’m a proud first wave feminist and I believe both men and women should respect each other equally. We are built differently and that’s ok because we compliment each other. We need to stop fighting and oppressing each other and start working as a team. Not all women want to stay at home, and not all men want to work. Communication and respect are important. The problem with the world is sexist ideologies and third wave feminists. They think the same but are in different teams. I’m glad we women have equal rights as men here in the United States.

      @Cj I guess you forget the Amazons. They were as brutal as men and they were real fighters. If you study history, you will find many women who contributed. You just have to study history to see that and also remember to be respectful because after all the person who gave you birth was a woman. She endured a pain men will never experience so have some respect.
      The feminist movement changed our society, we have many rights we did not use to therefore they made a difference

    More is offered in this short video to your average UA-camr than is offered almost anywhere else, and it's offered in a quick, easy-to-follow and easy-to-digest fashion.
    I don't think the idea of the series is to liberate, it's to spread awareness and offer a glance at the bigger issue.

    in a way they paved the way for all women's rights regardless of who started it.and just because one had more opportunity then others they were not there free rights but there dictated rights. this also forced men to look at the women of every race regardless differently even if it was only minor changes to begin with this gave every race a lot more fire power because it gave them more power over their own rights because now there women would be able to have a voice of there own.

    Question: I was told (somewhere) that prior to Womens Suffereage they didn't pay taxes, thus government eventually supported the Sufferage movement under the notion that for the first time women would have to pay taxes as equal as men had. True?

    • @raizumichin
      @raizumichin 10 років тому +14

      Not directly. Women weren't except from any taxes, but since most of them didn't work they didn't have pay any income tax and their husbands salaries went to buying things and paying mortgages (and thus generating property taxes and VAT).

    I asked my work if I could be a bagger, rather than a facer, and they said no, because they give it to the guys because they are stronger, which is ridiculous, because I can, and have carried a 30 pound backpack through a slot canyon.

    • @sampothen9221
      @sampothen9221 4 роки тому

      What is a bagger or a facer? And what is a slot canyon? And lastly, why does carrying a 30 pound backpack through such a slot canyon matter?
      Also, I know i said that last question was the last question, but why does that backpack feat matter? That doesn't show much because that backpack weighs mainly on your back and shoulders, not something like biceps or triceps.

    Great presentation as always... Tahirih ("Pure One") was a poetess & Baha'i Faith martyr. Her last words just before her strangulation in 1852 were: “You can kill me as soon as you like, but you will never stop the emancipation of women.” (Táhirih called to me and asked me to go to the Chief of Police with a special request. “It seems that they wish to strangle me,” she said. “Long ago, I set aside a silk handkerchief which I hoped would be used for this purpose. I deliver it into your hands and I want you to ask that drunkard to use it for the purpose of taking my life.”)
