FFS Nobody ever explicitly said the part where you could get just an electron knocked off an nothing else and I don't know how I haven't realised it sooner but it helps so much.

Very, very, very HELPFUL!!! You're the best! After days watching many videos about the theory, machine, interpretation, just now with your video I got it! Thank you very much!!! S2
Hey man, i just wann tell you that this video among other of your videos have helped me understand spectrometry a lot more, im currently an intern as a biomedical analist in a chemical analytic lab and was barely taught in this method, so thank you for the incredible explanation.
The Spectrometry and the behavior of Elements can always relate on the ionic configuration, the way O2 can be increased for it to bind to other compounds and their respective strength. The Ionic configuration can be increased always, as long as it knows its base compound for it to have its molecular activity, either it repels or binds itself to other compound. Atomic and Subatomic group are also related to other elements aside from O2 and can always be adjusted in order to obtain the mass spectrum, volume and its measurements. The compounds that are co-valent to one another can guarantee at increase in strength of the compound atom or decrease in order to configure the strength for it to be in the chem.formulation related to chemical compounds and non-chem. ePLDT/PLDT/SME/SMC-Subsidiaries/Telecommunications and partner Industries, for your respective statistics to refer the basis of science integration as to behavior of the proteins and the atomic structure for it to perform according to its ionic configuration. Quick note, the furthest peak to the right isn't generally the M+ ion, but the M+1 or M+2 ion, depending on the typical isotopic presence. That ratio, M+ and M+x ions, will tell you how many carbons you have to determine the molecular formula.
Amazing lecture! I just have one question, why wasn't the mass of the parent ion 179? Shouldn't one hydrogen be missing from it? I'm really confused...
But what if the mass to charge ratio doesn't have the cationic charge of plus one but more than one? Then won't it make Spectroscopy substantially complex plus how can I be so certain that the electron beam didn't knock off more than one electron? It might be more hence inparting it more than plus one charge!
Great video, although magnetic field never accelerates any particle, that would be the electric field. Magnetic field is there to deflect the ions depending on their weight and charge.
The mass spectrometer shoots electrons on the molecule and depending on the energy it is done with, it can split the molecule in smaller fragments or just steal one electron. The latter creates the parent-peak. My understanding is that the amount of energy with which the electron shoots at the molecule determines, if it get split or not. With less energy, it get's less likely that the electron splits the molecule, so you can get a bigger peak for the parent ion. And with more energy it get's more likely to create fragments, so the parent ion's peak get's smaller. I assume, that it is better to create more fragments than parent ions to be able to determine the structure of the molecule from the beginning.
A low-resolution mass spectrum of the alkaloid vobtusine showed the molecular weight to be 718. This molecular weight is correct for the molecular formulas C43H50N4O6 and C42H46N4O7. A high-resolution mass spectrum provided a molecular weight of 718.3743. Which of the possible molecular formulas is the correct one for vobtusine? Some one help me solve this
I'm not an expert at all. But I feel like the probability is fairly low that 100% of the sample will be fragmented every time. It's probably likely that a few will slip through unfragmented, at least that's my interpretation.
I would like to ask you a question in 2022 for the video uploaded in 2015 , is it possible to determine the concentration of our analyte of interest from the relative intensity of the spectrum??
Could someone explain why we can trust the parent peak to be representative of the target molecule? What prevents the fragmented pieces of the molecule from recombining into a larger molecule that is not the same as the original. My only guess is that larger molecules tend to be less stable than smaller ones and with a shower of electrons would not be able to form or remain long enough to be detected before fragmenting again (since a larger molecule would have more mass, possibly allowing it to travel longer before reaching the detector, should the mass-charge ratio allow), I'm not sure about it though.
all the ions are either cations or anions depending upon the mode of the machine but mostly cations. the ion extractor in the machine only extracts cations/anions to the analyzer. so chemical reaction between the same charge is not possible..
Thanks so much. I sent the link to many that need to learn this. You are very clear in the explanation. Can we tell the absolute quantities of molecules in a solution? With a spiked in standard?
Yes, with the proper controls and methodology. Internal standards are used either as, or in conjunction with, system suitability tests to check the precision of the instrument before a run. Retention times and signal: noise ratios are checked that they fall within the proper ranges before a run. Internal standards of a known concentration are spiked into samples that are extracted, as well as in a method blank to determine background noise that will then be subtracted from final values. Peak area heights of endogenous analytes are plotted over the peak area of the internal standard, and this fraction is multiplied by the known concentration of the internal standard.
Hello bro...can you please teach me this...if cant can you just give answers "Methanol CH3OH was analysed in a moss spectrameter.Severeal Major PEAKS we're obtained at m/z values of 1,15,16,17 and 32.identify the ions responsbile for these PEAKS' Can someone help me with this
This is Reeeeaaaallly late, but I'll answer it anyway. 1 is just a Hydrogen, 32 is the parent ion (mass of methanol), 15 is the methyl cation, and 17 is the OH. The 16 could possibly be the O, but I am not so sure.

Screw Khan Academy. This man is wildly intelligent and down-to-earth. He makes learning for the MCAT so practical.

I am also confused about this question.
The electron beam doesn’t remove a hydrogen, it just removed an electron so the molecular mass is still the same.

yes does magnetic field only deflect?
So does the spectrometer send out photos and then increase the power of the magnetic field slowly until it detects the same photon it’s sending out?
Your english is easy to understand! Great class!

without electrons it is hard to form new bonds

I have a little question, the "z" value is taken as 1 in the calculation. Where does this definition come from? Is it because of the MS setting?
It is because most cations have a charge of 1
