Respect the ledge! Clip in when near the edge. Especially if it is wet. You should teach about tying end knots on the rope, not just making sure they "hit the bottom" that you probably couldn't even see with the second ledge. Speaking of the second ledge, you should also mention that you might want to protect the rope on that ledge as well. For teaching skills, you left out some pretty important ones that could get people hurt.
I was thinking the exact thing. Closing off your system by just adding barrel knots to the bottoms of your ropes is ALWAYS essential - forgetting those is how people can and do die every year. I also didn't see him use a prusick back up at all despite mentioning them which is odd.
Honest he is not, his shows are entertainment not factual, some of his shows have even been removed because of dangerous false advice including an episode about caving. He also did a rock climbing episode at Malham cove and as a rock climber myself I was in hysterics at how bad it was.
"I don't think I paid enough attention to the safety briefing. I don't really know what I'm doing to be honest." You're very brave Jesse . I could'nt bear to watch your dad explaining the anchor points whilst being so close to the cliff edge. I'd love to spend a day talking to Bear about life and challenges. I admire his skills and attitude so much. It moves me to see a good father son relationship too. Best wishes to the Grylls family. Thank You for sharing your adventures. Regards GARY.
As a Father of an only Son, gotta say I had a bit of a pit in my stomach! Still, great class and who else but an extraordinarily qualified Father to show his Son how to rappel… Congratulations to you both! Proud Dad!
The boy was not using a prussik as a backup, but that's OK if you have someone to give you a fireman's belay at the bottom. Also, I would have tied in direct if I was that close to the edge. Also, they didn't appear to have tied a knot at the ends of the rope. That's normally a no-no. Lots of people rappel off the ends of their ropes and plummet, screaming, to their deaths.
Love it. Great to see your children coming through the Bear school of learning. It is comforting to us mere mortals to know a Grylls is holding the knowledge for the next generation.
I feel like this video was partly aimed at all the climbers giving Bear grief over his climbing and mountaineering in running wild lol. Worthwhile showing how to do a prussik & reminding folks to tie stopper knots on the ends of their rope! Nice to see the father and son time!
You are such a amazing father . My father don't want me to scout because it need hurt work now my father proud of me. You are inspiration of me. I will one day climb up mount Everest . hope you see my comment .
Hey Bear, Jesse and crew. Thanks for this great informative video. Would love to see some more knot videos and also how to establish anchors from trees. Not all places we go will have bolted anchors so having some knowledge of how to establish anchors without bolts would be fantastic. Thanks again!!
Jessie great ur taking advantage of having bear as dad ur living my dream respect you and the old men 🤣 bless you both Jessie so honest DIDNT CATCH A WORD
Yes I am too a Bear Gryll's fan. His hair raising adventures along with quotations added fame to Discovery channel he is real hero not reel hero.Hats off Bear Gryll's.
Which exact bolts did yuou use for anchors? How is the rope, which is going to the base secured at the base? What is the knot on the second anchor, on the black carabiner , before rope gone to the base? Your sons belay was upside down. So where was the prusik for backing up you rappel? Your son did not have rappel back up prusik or autoblock either.
It is kinda sketchy but still very much safe. There are mantis? belay/abseil devices like pezl reverso, with auto lock, when belaying from top. But aint gonna auto lock when abseiling. And its not compatible technique with device shown in video. So indeed very sketchy tutorial. Tutorial because many will try to repeat it. Cause its Bear 😃
To me Bear s logic and training, apply to all aspects of life. It helps people use their brain hopefully in figuring solutions to problems, weather it be tying a rope or fixing a flat tire. Good videos luv watching your son & you.
A stopper knot on the rope end is 101 P1 to avoid rappelling of the end of rope as many have mentioned. Bear should’ve been clipped into the anchor when close to the edge. Take a course before attempting via a certified instructor 👍 Great to see Father and Son or Daughter stuff like this! Let them feel the energy of the outdoors, face their fear and confidence gained will carry through life 😊
Should really tie a knot in the ends of the rope to fully avoid the possibility of abseiling off the ends, particularly as I'm not sure you'd be able to see the bottom of the cliff from the top. There were people at the top here to help Jesse get set up and off the top safely, but the film didn't make this clear. The idea that the experienced person would give a briefing then descend, leaving the other to attach themselves to the rope and set off alone is ridiculous and a recipe for disaster. Yes, Bear is protecting the descent by being ready to pull the ropes taught if Jesse let go of the brake rope (whereas Bear's protection was a prussik, which would grab the rope if he let go), but there are plenty of opportunities for Jesse to get his set up wrong and fall before he's established on the descent. There were actually people at the top to help him set off, but the film should make that clearer. If there are really just two of you and you're teaching someone to abseil, get them set up and safe, and protect their descent with a second rope you belay from the top.
My dream is to go to an Adventurous trek with Bear... I've already gone Multiple times to Different Places in Himalayas but with Bear , it will be totally different ! I've also Done Rappelling 4-5 times & also I'm 17 yrs. old... But can't rappel like a Pro (Bear) ! Rappelling with jumps (Push) is the thing which Bear does really well... 👊👌🔥😎👍👏👌
As a climber who has some knowledge of bolting rock I’ve gotta say WTF is that bolt the bolt is supposed to have at most 10-15mm of space between the hanger and the top of the threads (Edit it’s still super strong enough stronger than anything your clipping it to) Also “ helmets are essential where there’s loose crumbly rock like here “ as he’s standing less that a meter from the edge not clipped in 😂 and he takes off his helmet while standing under the cliff
I wish Bear talked a bit about types of rope. Most climbing ropes are unsafe in wet conditions. You need a dry-treated rope for these kinds of situations. Additionally, as others have noted, it’s good practice to put a stopper knot on the ends of your rope in addition to checking that it reached the bottom. The knots will ensure that you don’t go flying off the end of your rope
You need to have a cowstail clipped in when rigging your line. One slip and youre done, especially when rigging the rope pad and lowering the rope and setting up the rappel system. And not clipped in to those triple loader carabiners.
If Jess goes hands off rope, Bear is down and can stop his fall simply by loading rope from below. Its called firemans belay. Body weight of someone on the rope below you prevents you from unlocking your belay device.

👍🏽
holy cow yes! tie the ends of each rope with a barrel. such an easy safety check.
Can’t believe he wasn’t clipped in up top. Just dangerous.
Typical grylls

Bear Grylls is a outstanding man with outstanding courage and honesty. That's the reason why the whole world loves him 👊👊👊🔥🔥🔥
Not so sure about the honesty part since everyone found out his show was fake with him staying in hotels and doin not survival stuff off camera
Honest he is not, his shows are entertainment not factual, some of his shows have even been removed because of dangerous false advice including an episode about caving. He also did a rock climbing episode at Malham cove and as a rock climber myself I was in hysterics at how bad it was.
Every part of this comment is an overstatement.
Bear Grylls should do man vs wild with his son.
😁
Bear and Son vs WILD on Netflix hehe!
Son thinking
Why are you giving this idea,s 😥
정말 무섭겠다😮❤
Jesse is a very good boy. When he grows up, he will be like his dad. God bless you.

U are just an outstanding man.. Keep going.. ❤ Love frm India..🇮🇳 love u to the core Bear..!
Jessy should proud to have a father like Bear Grylls 💜
Watching Bear sit that near the edge while explaining it all without a "safety net" gave me anxiety! :P
Bear you are such an amazing person keep on doing what you're doing.
I feel like this video was partly aimed at all the climbers giving Bear grief over his climbing and mountaineering in running wild lol. Worthwhile showing how to do a prussik & reminding folks to tie stopper knots on the ends of their rope! Nice to see the father and son time!
OMG. Jesse is my age... it's awesome to see such a powerfull youth in these tough times!

To me Bear s logic and training, apply to all aspects of life. It helps people use their brain hopefully in figuring solutions to problems, weather it be tying a rope or fixing a flat tire. Good videos luv watching your son & you.
Yes! Knots, knots, and more knots!
Just a quick question. People also suggest to tie a knot by the end of the rope to prevent go though when you didnt reach the ground is it true?
A stopper knot on the rope end is 101 P1 to avoid rappelling of the end of rope as many have mentioned. Bear should’ve been clipped into the anchor when close to the edge.

Also, Jessie should also have a prusik
If Jess goes hands off rope, Bear is down and can stop his fall simply by loading rope from below. Its called firemans belay.
Body weight of someone on the rope below you prevents you from unlocking your belay device.
