That was back in the day when military officers wanted good pistols that weren't too heavy, but were easy to shoot. This model was likely a very popular private purchase item.
Makes sense. Pistols aren't fired in anger very often, so you might as well carry one that's light and unobtrusive. Of course, WW1 was the exception... pistols were used a lot in trench clearing!

The Astra may not have been the star of the show, but it got the job done.
Have you seen a Gold Damascene Astra? They steal the spotlight alright! Astras are pretty little pistols, but a 400 all gussied up with fine gold wire is really something else.

My grandfather took one of these back from the European front. Still got it, really underappreciated pistol.

@@stealmysunshine Yep! Haven't shot it in about a year, mostly because the original checkered grips dry-rotted, so I'm on the hunt for an original set. It's perfectly functional and never had a malfunction, taking it apart for detail cleaning is a huge struggle lol.
Crazy, mine brought his back from the Pacific Theater. Weird to see a review on it.

@@Waldemarvonanhalt Have to disagree. It does feature yes, but there are others. I've definately seen Browning HIpower or M1911's and certainly also a Luger P08. Anyway. Good to stumble across another TinTin fan from time to time.
@@Waldemarvonanhalt even in the Spanish version of the Seven Crystal Balls in page 43, when Tin Tin and Captain Haddock are pursuing Professor Calculus kidnappers, Tin Tin refers to his gun as a 'Browning' (*), which by the way it looks very much like a FN Browning, and is the archetypical gun in the series, despite being a variety of models.
(*) I have not read the original French language version, but I am pretty sure that the translation was rightful to the original.
@@diegoferreiro9478 I read the English translations. None of them ever mentioned a Browning, but now that you mention it, the early FN pistols would fit the bill.

The 400 version was featured in the Coen Brothers' "Miller's Crossing."
I think that was a Savage.
@@zoidersjust checked the IMFDB page, it's definitely an Astra 400.
IMFDB are often wrong.
@@zoiders If you look at stills from the film, it's definitely not a Savage (though I think the Savage 1907 would have been a great one to include in the film.) It has the Astra's distinctive slide/barrel.

These pistols were nevermeant to be serious sidearms. They were badges if rank. Mae, I am amazed at the obscure weapons you bring to light.
Astra 300 in 9mm short was my grandad side arm. His primary weapon in Yugoslav partisans was Zbrojovka M37 LMG.

@@michaelimhof4212 Hey, that's totally understandble, I was trying to make a joke, not insult you in any way. The logo, I believe, is an M1 Garand clip.
A C&R license basically means you can get any firearm that is at least 60 years old and not a NFA/GCA restricted (basically, machine guns are what matter) shipped directly to your home instead of having to fill out the 4437 transfer form and paying the fee.

Used to see these Astra pistols and other military surplus firearms advertised in the back of many outdoor magazines in the 60's. Mail order items in those days. Priced around $30- $40.
