Stevie is mesmerizing, but I’ve always thought that Christine didn’t get enough praise for her own amazing performances. Just before this, on the same show, they did “Over My Head,” with Christine’s lovely, soothing voice in the lead. Both amazing talents.
Stevie discovered the Rhiannon character in the early 1970s through a novel called Triad by Mary Leader. The novel is about a woman named Branwen who is possessed by a witch named Rhiannon.
I was under the vague impression for years she got the name at least from Evangeline Walton's The Song Of Rhiannon, which is part of a four novel retelling of Welsh legends. However she didn't know about those until after the song was released. She bought the film rights to the entire series
Rhiannon is rightfully considered one of Fleetwood Mac's classics. I love Stevie's songwriting, the combination of beauty and haunting tones in the song, combined with how tight the band sounds. The guitar playing is perfect for this song. And yes Bright Angel - you could pull off that flowing style.
I LOVED Saturday nights as a kid/teen for that reason. Sometimes the parents would even stay up late to watch some rock and roll (but to my relief, usually just a bit of it before heading to bed)
FIRE🔥🔥🔥🔥!!! No Auto tune and Stevie wrote this fantastic song in about 30 minutes. I'm listening to music over 60 yrs this was one of the greatest performances ever Im a big fan of her. Kudos to all the bandmembers. She was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame twice. Once by herself the other with Mac. You chose the correct video to react to. It's the best!
Rhiannon is thought to have been a Queen of great power. As time passed she became a legend and was thought of as a great sorceress/beauty of great power and benevolence.😊
Hands down the BEST live version of this song. It was Stevie Nicks first appearance with the group on a televised show (Lindsay Buckingham as well) and is absolutely FIRE! Stevie Nicks reveals her rock goddess credentials. Other live versions are more toned down, Stevie Nicks singing "Rhiannon" more as a ballad. All are great, of course because it's Fleetwood Mac. Also, Rhiannon is based on a legend of a Welsh witch. Stevie Nicks was and still is a lover of the mystical.
Fleetwood Mac are a great band, elevated to a higher level by the force of nature that is Stevie Nicks. I was born 15 years after their peak but damn if that woman isn't captivating. Such a talent.
Hi Maddy, this is such a great performance by Stevie. Like Linda Ronstadt, a gorgeous, talented woman from the 70s. Stevie had come across the name Rhiannon in a novel titled "Triad". In the story, a woman is possessed by a witch named Rhiannon. Rhiannon was a mythological Welsh goddess.
Not just a lovely woman, but also a brilliant song writer and, according to Stevie, the best voice in the band. All I can say is that I agree with Stevie.😊❤
I saw them live in 86, they are better live than in studio, one of the few bands that can recreate and surpass their studio song versions. They are also a deep dive of classic hits!
This is the introduction of Stevie Nicks to the world. She is the rock goddess. She wrote this song and many other classics including Dreams, Gypsy, Sara, Gold Dust Woman, Landslide, Stand Back, Edge of Seventeen, Leather and Lace to name a few. The studio version of this song is a bit more laid back than this rock edged live performance.
I have a playlist that I call backyards and tool sheds because it was the soundtrack that I heard coming from passing cars, open windows, neighbors while I was playing make believe in backyards and tool sheds and Rhiannon was prominent. Yep, Stevie Nix liked her witches and gypsies. Lindsey freakin Buckingham!!! The Midnight Special and Wolfman Jack, every weekend, were so good.
Growing up I had always liked Fleetwood, but that was it, but I managed to see this version of this song and I instantly loved the energy and revisited the band's music, love the band now.
Rhiannon is a major figure in Welsh mythology, appearing in the First Branch of the Mabinogi, and again in the Third Branch. Ronald Hutton called her "one of the great female personalities in World literature", adding that "there is in fact, nobody quite like her in previous human literature".[1] In the Mabinogi, Rhiannon is a strong-minded Otherworld woman, who chooses Pwyll, prince of Dyfed (west Wales), as her consort, in preference to another man to whom she has already been betrothed. She is intelligent, politically strategic, beautiful, and famed for her wealth and generosity. With Pwyll she has a son, the hero Pryderi, who later inherits the lordship of Dyfed. She endures tragedy when her newborn child is abducted, and she is accused of infanticide. As a widow she marries Manawydan of the British royal family, and has further adventures involving enchantments. Like some other figures of British/Welsh literary tradition, Rhiannon may be a reflection of an earlier Celtic deity. Her name appears to derive from the reconstructed Brittonic form *Rīgantonā, a derivative of *rīgan- "queen". In the First Branch of the Mabinogi, Rhiannon is strongly associated with horses, and so is her son Pryderi. She is often considered to be related to the Gaulish horse goddess Epona. She and her son are often depicted as mare and foal. Like Epona, she sometimes sits on her horse in a calm, stoic way. This connection with Epona is generally accepted among scholars of the Mabinogi and Celtic studies, but Ronald Hutton, a historian of paganism, is skeptical.
All Fleetwood Mac's songs will be on your playlist 😊 This is a complicated band. It was 2 bands merge the guitar player and singer where a band called Buckingham nicks they where also a couple. They joined Mick Fleetwood the very tall drummers band. Stevie nicks and Lindsey Buckingham where breaking up as they started up the charts. Alot of there songs was about them breaking up yet still in one of the biggest bands in the 70s.😮❤❤
Stevie and Christine McVie were not only great harmonists together, they were also great friends. How do I know this? They would often go clothes shopping together.😊❤
True story about the witch. Stevie wrote this fantastic song in about 20 minutes. This was one of the greatest performances in my 60 yrs of listening to music. Stevie is one of the greatest singers ever. Inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame twice once with Mac other by herself. You chose the correct video it's the best on the Midnight Special. Kudos to the entire band masterful performance
Stevie is such an amazing performer, the first woman ever to be inducted twice into the rock&roll hall of fame and gorgeous with it. Check-out their album Rumours, the 9th highest selling album of all time with over 40 million copies sold, 4 tracks in the US top-10, 'Dreams' reached No.1.
Stevie Nicks is such a unique talent. Yes she has that unique voice with the rich texture, but also an incredible song writer. I hope to see you react to her incredible song If Anyone Falls. Great reaction Maddy. 😉👍
Nicks started writing this song after reading the book Triad by Mary Leader. It is about a woman who believes she is being possessed by the spirit of a woman named Rhiannon. There are themes of mythology and the occult that Nicks used in her song along with the name.
A fascinating history this group possesses! From the early days as “Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac “, through the intermediate years with Jeremy Spencer taking the main lead, the arrival of Christine McVie (nee Perfect!), and the departure of Spencer and Kirwan to be replaced by Buckingham and Nicks, they have contributed so much to popular music, from out and out blues through to the MoR style of later years. A real rabbit hole!!!
Howdy Maddy. Glad to see you check out this version. Personally I think one of the best live performances ever, by anyone. Raw and Gritty ...she read a story about witchcraft, she liked to read in that genre. If not mistaken. that is the base of the song. Your right on. She is part witch, part gypsy. Awesome. Great work . Be well.
Perfect commentary. Elequent. Great reaction. I was 10 when the White Album hit. I saw this performance at 11 on TV and was blown away. I still love their music. Great band.
Only Fleetwood Mac led zeppelin and Pink Floyd takes u to another world This song is a masterpiece from Fleetwood Mac and a iconic performance In the top 15 bands of all time
Most of the Fleetwood Mac members practiced magic and considered themselves witches. But yes, this is about Rhiannon from English(Welsh I think) myth. A classic tale about magic, love and tragedy. Fleetwood Mac were basically a bunch of nerds lol and wouldn't be half as amazing if they weren't🤘🏼
Back in those days and I actually saw this on TV in 76 when it aired....Stevie Knicks was Janis Joplin reincarnated ......while still to this day she is still an amazing singer her versions of this and other songs are like stuff you hear in an elevator or dentist office waiting room
I actually met Stevie in the mid 80’s at the airport in Phoenix Arizona. I was flying from there to the small airport near Topanga Canyon, CA. She and 4 of her backup singers were in line, right in front of me, as we waited to board our plane. All I could do was stare, open mouthed at her. It’s an embarrassing (for me) story that I’ve never told before. 😊
Rhiannon is best known from a collection of British myths, legends, and folklore known as The Mabinogion (which is also one of many sources for Arthur), but the stories were in oral tradition centuries before being written down, first in Welsh, then translated. The character is a witch of sorts, but there are a lot of symbolic clues that she was in pre-Christian times, a goddess. A lot of fantasy and historical fiction has been inspired by The Mabinogion and evidently that's where Stevie first heard the name, though she did her homework and read The Mabinogion, later, after writing the song.

What a fantastic iconic band....what happened to music! I heard two songs yesterday that had no instruments, and the Voice was manipulated by auto tune electronics! It’s up to you kids to rescue music! It’s a book she read. She told you that!😎🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
So true!!! That’s why promotion of classics is very important. I do believe the more of what you put out into the world will return in one way or another.
She recorded a couple different versions of this song on one she has a closing line ,and he still cries out for her ,don't leave me, don't leave me now
There’s old Manor House in wales. That was turned into recording studios. Were some bands have recorded there albums. With is supposed to be haunted. Kreeped the bands out who stayed there.
And to think that Lindsey had to talk Mick Fleetwood into taking Stevie into the group when he was offered a spot w/them. Seriously doubt he ever regretted taking the "package deal" !
The old live versions are a little course for my ears, but the Dance tour they did was spectacular. They evolved in all aspects. They also managed to fix their harmonizing imbalances.
RIP Christine McVie. She was a great musician and songwriter.
Stevie is mesmerizing, but I’ve always thought that Christine didn’t get enough praise for her own amazing performances. Just before this, on the same show, they did “Over My Head,” with Christine’s lovely, soothing voice in the lead. Both amazing talents.

Did you see her American Horror Story appearance.
Was fun .❤
She plays the White Witch leader of them all❤
I was under the vague impression for years she got the name at least from Evangeline Walton's The Song Of Rhiannon, which is part of a four novel retelling of Welsh legends. However she didn't know about those until after the song was released. She bought the film rights to the entire series
You could dress in whatever and be Beautiful
Maybe some drugs too???😅

She definitely is a classic!
This performance was on TV in the 70s on the Midnight Special.... Every Saturday night - live music, incredible.
Yes!!!
I LOVED Saturday nights as a kid/teen for that reason. Sometimes the parents would even stay up late to watch some rock and roll (but to my relief, usually just a bit of it before heading to bed)
Friday night, not Saturday. Came on after the Tonight Show, 1:00-2:30am. I watched every week.

This is the 70s at its best. Thanks for playing it.
Magical music from Fleetwood Mac 😊. Excellent live version ! Great harmony vocals. 👍
Pretty bad harmonies on this as far as great harmonies are concerned tho
ahhhfff ...Id go back there to then any day... miss the people and the way we were
Maddie just melting away in the flow of the song. Nice to watch. ;-)

Fleetwood Mac was amazing
Stevie Nicks a beautiful Lady with a totally unique voice
"Rhiannon is the Welsh goddess of horses, forgiveness, rebirth, the moon, and fertility."
R.I.P. Christine McVie....Lovely woman.
Not just a lovely woman, but also a brilliant song writer and, according to Stevie, the best voice in the band. All I can say is that I agree with Stevie.😊❤
Every guy between the ages of 15-50 had a huge crush on Stevie in the mid-late 70’s 😎
Absolutely. I dare anyone to deny it!

Rhiannon is a significant figure in Welsh mythology.
Yes please 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
The song was written after Stevie Nicks was reading a book called Triad by Mary Leader 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I’ll have to take a look around for the book!

Like he said.😅
Stevie was crazy wild enough to make a subject about a Welch Witch ..
It’s so great when you hear a singer just riding with it like that
One of the greatest performances of anyone anywhere.
Stevie Nicks...You dont know her? Oh, man...are you in for a treat! Shes still touring today. The Queen of Rock and Roll!
Stevie was possessed by Rhiannon.Fleetwood Mac-“Silver Springs “live The Dance

An intense performance by one of the great bands of the rock era!
Stevie will always be the Gypsy Queen. Amazing the magical music they managed to create in that situation.
I agree it’s good!
Rhiannon is a character in Welsh myth. It's a compilation of stories called "the Mabinogion"
Stevie and Christine McVie were not only great harmonists together, they were also great friends. How do I know this? They would often go clothes shopping together.😊❤

The Welsh are very much NOT English... they're British (Britons) - - there's a difference. You might as well call a Scots "English".
I almost forgotten how sexy this song is, it’s just a masterpiece. It really has that October Halloween Gothic vibe
Back in those days and I actually saw this on TV in 76 when it aired....Stevie Knicks was Janis Joplin reincarnated ......while still to this day she is still an amazing singer her versions of this and other songs are like stuff you hear in an elevator or dentist office waiting room
Her solo work , song Edge of Seventeen is a great song too😊! Among many others.

Many songs of this era have are based on history.
Love, love, love !!
Fleetwood Mac was the real deal. 🙂
They really are🩷
You're watching the best female live vocal ever!!
Fun fact about this song... Stevie wrote it in 10 mins! She's a GODDESS and THE WHITE WITCH of this lifetime!
Strong, confident, talented and still very feminine. That's and A+ woman !
You are best ❤
It's Weich folklore. Stevie's publishing company is called welch witch music
Welsh witch music
Rhiannon, is the Welsh goddess of horses, forgiveness, rebirth, the moon, and fertility. Nicks would later recall how she was mistaken about her.
Amazing performance 👍
Dreams do unwind, and love really is a state of mind. :)
And by all the Gods and Goddesses the tension in this band made their music all the more better...impactful, emotional. :)
Stevie Nicks is my favorite female vocalist also a great song writer

USA/Tennessee: I like the radio version of this song. Got the album.
A mythological queen. thought to be possessed by the sprite of Rhiannon
Masterpiece
Hey Maddie Mick Fleetwood (the drummer) Has said watching Stevie perform Rhianna Live is like watching a exorcism.
Rianon is an ancient Welsh legend about reanon
Excellent song, and you are gorgeous ❤❤❤
The song is amazing!! And thank you
There’s old Manor House in wales. That was turned into recording studios. Were some bands have recorded there albums. With is supposed to be haunted. Kreeped the bands out who stayed there.
Robert wade you are a man of impeccable taste
I had the biggest crush on Stevie back in the seventies.
I think Stevie read the name Rhiannon in a novel and invented the rest of the story.
"On The Edge Of Seventeen" is another of their tunes you might react to.
We need "MORE COWBELL" baby🐄 check out Go Your Own Way by them.
No joke. Stevie writes what she knows.
I was sure she was going to explode!!
