The Midnight Special performance back in the 1970s is my personal favourite version of the song (specifically the practice run they happened to have recorded). The drummer once described it like experiencing an exorcism, watching Stevie Perform the song during that particular performance. It's truly Stevie Unleashed, and if you think this one was an awesome performance, you haven't seen anything until you watch that performance. Rhiannon is a moon, magic, and fertility goddess in Welsh mythology, and the queen of the Welsh Faerie folk according to her legend. It's said she fell in love with the Prince of Dyfed, Pwyll, and the two married, however, after nearly a whole decade, they desperately wanted a child but continuously couldn't have one until one day Rhiannon finally found out she was pregnant. The kingdom rejoiced and all seemed well until the baby was born. Rhiannon named her newborn son Pryderi, but in the night after his delivery, he suddenly vanished. Panicked, the nurses who were meant to be watching the infant decided to blame the disappearance of the baby on Rhiannon. Out of fear of what would happen to them once it was discovered the baby was missing while under their care, the nurses killed a goat and smeared the blood on Rhiannon's face and hands, claiming she went mad in the night and murdered and ate her own son. Pwyll, while not wanting to believe this, had no choice but to banish his wife from the palace. She would spend many years outside the palace gates begging and desperately trying to tell the truth about her son's disappearance. Meanwhile, elsewhere in Wales, an infant boy had turned up on the doorstep of a farmer. The couple took the babe in and raised the boy as their own, however quickly noticed he wasn't like other boys. He was growing twice as fast, and aged to a young man, somewhere like 18 or 19 years old, in half that time. He was stronger, faster, and more agile than other boys too. The couple realized this baby was the missing son of Rhiannon and he would return to her, only then her name being cleared as he was indeed alive. She stood by herself all that time and never stood down, knowing the truth and telling it to whomever would listen. She is a protector of women and infants because of this. Pryderi is the main character of the Welsh mythological Chronical of the Mabinogion, and is the only character in it to appear in all Four branches (parts). He would become a legendary hero and god in his own right. Stevie read the name for the first time while in an airport, and fell in love with the name, writing the song soon afterward. The book she had picked up while in the airport had only been loosely inspired by the Welsh lore, very loosely, with Rhiannon being the name of I believe a witch in the story. It was coincidental that the song would line up perfectly with the actual Mythology of Rhiannon, but it did. Stevie garnered a reputation of potentially being a witch herself because of her habit of wearing black and because of this song in particular. She was not and is not a witch, she just simply likes mythology, fairytales, folklore, and wearing black. It got so bad that she actually completely ditched the black for a time in the early 80s, wearing mostly white instead, trying to convince people that no, she is not actually a witch. It's become more of a running joke now, with AHS even playing on it and making a version of Stevie (played by Stevie herself!) who was indeed a white witch. Rhiannon is probably her most iconic song, I would say! Also, others below have mentioned it, if your daughter wants to learn Guitar, have her react to a live performance of Lindsey Buckingham playing Big Love. The one from this same show is a good one to use, it's absolutely phenomenal and absolutely amazing to watch that man play!
This is a more, shall we say, "mature" version. The version from the '76 live show is more emotional with a raw rock and roll power to it. That version also shows why there are still men all over the world still in love with Stevie after all this time. She was a breathtaking performer in her youth and performed Rhiannon with a certain sexuality to it that's missing here, though this version is still great. Hell, anything they do is great.
@@TheAndy1268 No, they began having another full time guitarist with Lindsey during the Dance tour. The first "White Album" tour Lindsey played all guitar parts. The Rumours tour Lindsey played all guitar parts with the exception of "Go Your Own Way", where Ray Lindsey ( i think that's his name) , Buckingham's guitar tech played the acoustic part. The same is true with the Tusk tour and the Mirage tour.
As good as this version is, I considered it a more mellow and subdued version compared to the "fire in the belly" version available from the 1970's show, "The Midnight Special". That version has the raw and yet to be tapped power of Stevie Nicks voice, the tremendous almost reckless abandonment guitar of Lindsey Buckingham, the maniacal drumming of Mick Fleetwood, the rhythmic and hypnotic bass of John McVie and the classy yet mood setting keyboard of Christy McVie. It is so good it leaves me shaking my head in amazement almost every time.
Hmmmmm, really should have picked a song/video of them live from the 70's when her voice was in its prime and their performances/emotions were the most raw.
My friend was a bit younger than your daughter when she heard this song for the first time. She fell in love with Stevie's voice and decided to be a singer.
"The Dance" is a tremendous concert! One of the best concerts I've ever seen/heard (Pink Floyd - Pulse and U2 - Live at Slain Castle, being my two favs). Is that an IPA you are sippin on? If so.. i'm curious... which one? haha
Fleetwood Mac original guitarists were Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer. Until the band settled on Buckingham & Nicks there were three or four guitarists including Bob Welch (Ebony Eyes) passed through the band.
Love this song just wish it would have been the live version from saterday night special stevie was much younger and still had her full voice and she seems to get possessed by the Spirit of Rhiannon at the end it's incredible
I agree I was hopeful it would be the "MIdnight Special " version which in my opinion is the ultimate version available to watch. I myself have watched it at least a dozen times.
I agree with everyone else saying you should do "Big Love" from this same concert. That song is Lindsey Buckingham putting on a master class on how to play guitar.
That's what passes for teenage cool these days. Though to be fair, if I had to grow up in the world we have now, I might be inclined to keep a tight lid on it myself.
Dad doesn't help by stopping the video at key times and ruining the development of the song. . .And then deciding to quiz her in the middle of the song about her aspirations regarding playing the guitar. . .REALLY?????? Right in the middle of the performance? The daughter is probably thinking, "Dad, just let it play!"
He's chosen the wrong version to play her. There's a much more rock and roll live version from this band in 1976. It's much better. ua-cam.com/video/wgmRb3MlpHQ/v-deo.html
Teenagers,, thank god it passes fast. I remember my 4 teens all having that attitude, especially my daughters. I feel bad for her dad in this video, he’s so patient.
When you figure Stevie is late 50’s-early 60’s as she performs this, pretty damn impressive. No she isn’t hitting the high notes but this is a mature classy rendition. The entire “The Dance” concert was outstanding.
This was a great concert - I remember watching it with my mom back in '97 and then I bought the CD. There are several good performances from this concert you should check out (if you haven't).
🤘❤️🤘 Man, this is great but you really missed out not doing that '76 Midnight Special version!!! Between the guitar work and Stevie's extended vocals on it, mmmmhmmmm hands down the best live version by of it!!!! 😉🤘🤘
I saw this tour in 1997 in Atlantic City, NJ. We had front row seats and I was in absolute heaven!!!! The entire concert was just breathtaking!!!!!! To be that close to Fleetwood Mac was an unbelievable dream!!!!
You should let the kids listen to Big Love from this concert. Lindsey is AMAZING! The Dance concert in 1997-ish was to this day, the best concert I think I've ever been to. Partly because I've never been to a concert where the audience is completely quiet until the song ends. We all gave a standing ovation, and sat down again. And that was at a stadium that was packed with 20,000 people. Crazy!
One of the best concerts I've seen on tv. I remember running out and getting the cd and VHS tape as soon as they came out after seeing this. I still enjoy watching the whole thing to this day and loved how they ended with the marching band
My word I wish I had had a parent like you to give me a music education. My mum has mysophonia so even the TV up too loud is bad news. We can't even like go to a restaurant to eat cos it's too overwhelming for her. But I think I did ok on my own
Love Fleetwood Mac and love this song! You should react to the whole concert this live version came from! Definitely need more Fleetwood Mac on the channel for sure!
Get a video of Santana playing Europa or Somba Pa Ti when he did his concert in Mexico and let her see what a master guitarist does with an electric guitar. Things you can never do on an acoustic guitar, never!
If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend the documentary film, SOUND CITY. Made by Dave Grohl and includes awesome stories from great musicians, like Mick Fleetwood, Tom Petty, Neil Young and Rick Springfield.
I grew up in the San Fran Bay area, San Jose, Ca......when I was in High School there was a local band called "Fritz"...Stevie and Lindsey were in that band. They would play at venues around the Bay Area. They also played at a Music Festival in San Jose, where Jimi Hendrix was the headliner....I still have the program and there is a pic of the band Fritz...with a VERY young Stevie and Lindsey.
The live version in the White Wing Dove concert in 81 is the one to watch, absolutely beautiful and great concert in all, at her peak - with the whole concert, I think your daughter would enjoy it
Iconic band, Albatross and (at least in the UK, the BBC and Sky must pay them LOADS of royalties whenever they broadcast Formula One) The Chain are legendary tracks. Albatross Go Your Own Way Don't Stop Tusk The Chain Dreams Sara Seven Wonders Little Lies Everywhere Big Love I so hope you see this and delve deeper into the rabbit hole with your kids lol.
I named my first daughter after this song. There is a live version of this song on their Buckingham Nicks album that’s just awesome to hear. It’s before they joined Fleetwood Mac and I think it has some of their best works still to this day on it. As a huge Buckingham fan, u get to hear how really good he is on the guitar on that album too. She does a few country songs which is neat to hear because her grandfather was a success country singer way back in the day and that’s who inspired her to get into music and writing.
The 76 Midnight Special performance of this song is arguably the greatest live rock performance by any band ever. Another insanely good live performance by Stevie is Edge of Seventeen.
Everybody, young or old, should have the privilege to hear the beautiful voice of Stevie Nicks at some point in their lifetime. Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham was the sound of my childhood. MORE MORE Fleetwood Mac please, anything from Rumours, especially Songbird or The Chain
I remember this, it's from "The Dance". A Fleetwood Mac reunion concert/album. This show was great. Lindsay, Stevie and Christine had the best harmonies.

Your daughter may not believe this, is was the same with my son, who is 42 now. That music will become even more important and meaningful to her in the next 4-6 years.
Nice review, now you have showcased Stevie Nick's voice how about reacting to Song Bird to showcase Christine McVie's voice as I think at this time Fleetwood Mac had probably 2 of the best female singers in the world.
A friend of mine used to live next door to Stevie and a few houses away from Mick Brown (Dokken). He hung out Mick a lot and Stevie on occasion. He told me some wild stories.
@Mr Zazovia well that's another iconic one for sure and certainly one to look at as Stevie in her prime but there's something really fascinating about watching Stevie perform Gold Dust Woman after she had gone through so much and yet still capturing that intensity she was known for as a 48 year old woman whose still completely in her element.\
For a lady playing acoustic guitar, you should listen to Molly Tuttle playing White Freightliner Blues. Fantastic playing and delicate singing in perfect harmony
You are correct on the origin of the name Rhiannon, but Stevie ?Nicks said she named the song that because that was the name of a character in a romance novel she was reading at the time.
And I thought you were going to point out that Lindsey plays with fingers only, which was unique to Him at the time, I play this way also, and acoustic is mostly finger picked. Lindsey would say it's to be physically connected to the instrument, but there is a distinct tonal difference than with a pick.
Might I suggest if you're going to look at Fleetwood Mac, you look at Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, a much more blues orientated band than their later incarnation.
Original guitarist was Peter Green who is the true founder of the band but is said to have joined some drug cult and left the band hanging. The other members were Mick Fleetwood and John Mcvie Christy was brought in later and really I think they only really made one album with Lindsay and Stevie. Oh and Peter Green was an amazing guitarist and song writer maybe one of the greatest.
If your daughter wants to learn acoustic guitar you should react to Big Love by Fleetwood Mac from the same live concert, The Dance. Lindsey Buckingham... His love for the acoustic guitar brought Fleetwood Mac together for a reason!
You need to do "go your own way" and watch Lindsay cut loose. The "Chain" is another performance that is more tension filled, the look on Stevie's face while singing it is priceless.
While not connected to the island on your wall... it will have the feel of a time connected to it. check out the Heilung Norupo official video. It is kinda awesome and likely very different from what you have done with the kids before. Totally clean and teen safe.
Im Pretty sure Stevie Nicks wrote Rhiannon from the perspective of an Irish Gypsy, so i dont think its about a woman who thinks she is possessed but instead is about a woman who has a close relationship with spirits as the Gypsy's from Ireland tended to be quite spiritual almost "Airy Fairy" type people who lived a life of pacifism and spirituality
One advice about the guitar. First step is the hardest it feels so unnatural, once you battle through that part, no matter what you practice no matter what you learnin always make sure what youre doing is fun. Everyone will tell you you should learn this and that, whats better whats worse and whats quicker. Results will come in time and its not a competition, just enjoy it =)
'76 version version brother!! Check it out. This version you used was like the "lite" version of the song. I understand you wanted, perhaps, a cleaner sounding and better recorded version of a live performance, but do check out the older more powerful, stevie in her prime etc version. I believe the version you used was the live version they used for the album THE DANCE. Great album for sure! But the best version outside of the '76 live version was on their album FLEETWOOD MAC, 1st fleetwood mac album with Stevie and Lindsey on it. They are one of the few groups that to this day, not as strong as their say first 5 albums (Rumors being the best album of ALL time IMO) they continue to have a way of creating a strong visceral response from their listeners. You listen to their first self titled album and then Rumors back to back and you will know exactly the visceral feeling I'm talking about. Cmon guys can i get hell yes on that!!
Actually the original mac with peter green is outstanding blues and a bit less homogenized california soft rock - I rarely listen to the latter but still enjoy the former
"Rhiannon" is the mythology story of the "Welsh mare Goddess" (horse) Rhiannon who in punishment, had to carry people on her back to the "castle".There is a much longer tale to it..but suffice to say Goddess Rhiannon was being punished for falling in love with a "human being"..there is a lot more to it. It has nothing to do with "Goddess of fertility" none at all. When Stevie Nicks wrote the she had just read a book with the name Rhiannon in it and as she wrote the song about the story of "the Mythological Goddess Rhiannon" she had no idea there was a mythological story of "Welsh Mare Goddess Rhiannon" until after she wrote the song. In other words Stevie is rather Psychic to say the least!
The 1976 live recording of this song from the Midnight Special is the best version to watch
"Rhiannon" from the 1976 Midnight Special broadcast, is the best Live Rock song ever Televised.
radar0412 couldn’t agree any harder than I do
This one too! The other live 76 version. ua-cam.com/video/jQAK6sVovUk/v-deo.html
Completely agree
If you haven't, you guys should do the "The Chain - Live 1982 " when Stevie and Lindsey are just shooting daggers at each the whole time.

Absolutely the 1976 midnight special is the BEST!! Give her true concert experience!!
Stevie putting out about 1% of the energy she had in the 1976 version and is still captivating.
You did an absolute disservice to her by not showing her the 1975-1976 live versions of this song
no shit, thats the definitive version
This comment is everything
Agreed by far the version!!!!!
Gotta agree...poor choice on version

The 76 version was sexual where this is sensual. Subtle but distinct difference
Speaking about Lindsey Buckingham, when he was kicked out many years later, they had to replace him with 2 guitarists to reproduce his sound.
They actually kicked him out TWICE -- and they needed two guitarists to replace him both times!

Blow Annie's mind by playing "I'm So Afraid" from this same performance. "The Chain" is also really good.
You should show Annie the killer version of "Big love", played on that show. Stay safe !!
Love this song just wish it would have been the live version from saterday night special stevie was much younger and still had her full voice and she seems to get possessed by the Spirit of Rhiannon at the end it's incredible

Yes , The Midnight Special 1976 live version is a lot better .

this live version she omits the high notes, which doesn't alter opinion of those who already know the song, but not for newbies
if she wants great guitar, show her "Big Love". Lindsey Buckingham kills it and I believe it's acoustic with pickups.
THIS HAS LITTLE TO DO WITH THE YOUNGSTER,SOMEONE IS WAITING TO WITHDRAW FROM THE SPANK BANK,HE CAN'T SELL IT

The midnight special performance from 76 was their best for Rhiannon I think. They all go really hard especially Stevie.
that HORRIFIED LOOK on your daughter's face when you admitted you wanted to sing along

If you two like “horror” you should see Stevie on American Horror story. She sings in both seasons she shows up and is fabulous.
amazing
Need to reiterate that this was twenty years after they released it, so she realizes these are older people still able to be perfect.
one of my favourite fleetwood mac songs and I love Stevie Nicks voice her solo stuff is great as well
She needs to watch Nancy Wilson from Heart.
Thanks for re-introducing Stevie Nicks - who *is* Felletwood Mac. And as others have mentioned, there are even more brilliant examples.

I agree with others the 1976 version is the best!
For a couple unique and cool songs that may get a reaction out of her check these out!

Foo Fighters Meets 70's Bobby Caldwell - Live Looping Mashup by Elise Trouw ua-cam.com/video/Gl9GtO_vQxw/v-deo.html
i'm a metalhead but stevie nicks does everything to my soul lol
Your daughter may not believe this, is was the same with my son, who is 42 now. That music will become even more important and meaningful to her in the next 4-6 years.
For god sake! Please DO play her the 1976 version!
FLEETWOOD MAC - GOLD Dust Woman live at the Dance is one of Stevie's finest moments - I hope at some point you react to it :)
Have you done Don't Fear the Reaper from Blue Oyster Cult or any ZZTop?
76 version live midnight special. Blows the studio version away.
Great proficiency by Buckingham, playing without a pic! I have never seen anyone play like that and sound so good!!
You can't go wrong with Fleetwood Mac 😎
Keep on rocking
LOVE this song & appreciate your respect for this - guess you inundated with different versions: the track from 'LIVE' album my fav all the best
And I thought you were going to point out that Lindsey plays with fingers only, which was unique to Him at the time, I play this way also, and acoustic is mostly finger picked.
Lindsey would say it's to be physically connected to the instrument, but there is a distinct tonal difference than with a pick.
She’s probably heard the original Rhiannon which is why it’s not completely registering.
Might I suggest if you're going to look at Fleetwood Mac, you look at Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, a much more blues orientated band than their later incarnation.
This is a classic video
Blows my mind, that you have 69,500 subscribers and she has never had a reaction yet....if you count shear boredom a reaction. Your nailing it.
Peach of a song. Fleetwood mac were a hit machine.
Silver Springs is the one to react to from that show, with Stevie and Lindsay singing to each other. Absolutely breathtaking.
1976 live performances is the absolute best...my Queen rocker Stevie Nicks
Please revisit and do another reveiw this song from the live 1976 version, it is everything!!
You need to do "go your own way" and watch Lindsay cut loose. The "Chain" is another performance that is more tension filled, the look on Stevie's face while singing it is priceless.
Stevie Nicks wrote this song in a matter of minutes, Stevie Nicks... the Queen of Rock! 👍👍😎
Great song loved it live 👍 and some good info on the way
There's an OLDER MAC' Song...."OH WELL," that is quite
interesting; has a Cool, long ending.
Speaking of "BUCKINGHAM," check out "Trouble."
You and Annie should do a reaction of Haim’s version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well”. Would love to hear what Annie thinks of Bass Face.
Should of played her the ‘76 version from The Midnight Special.
This song is probably as old as you, Mr. Dad.... Props for her wanting to pick up a guitar!
This is my favorite version of this song. And fun fact, my nick name is Annie as well.
