Most dealerships and auto repair shops rip people off all the time facts. I know a guy who’s truck was showing a code 401 for egr value bad. He took it in and they charged him over 150 dollars to replace it and that’s all they did even though the holes were plugged up bad. So after a couple weeks his truck had the same code back on. I took off his throttle body and cleaned it out real good unplugged the port holes cleaned his new egr valve out checked it to make sure it was working properly with a vacuum test put it all back together and it is doing just fine that was 3 months ago no more codes. They knew it was plugged up but because it was showing the 401 code for egr valve they just replaced it and sent him on his way.

If you can actually see the engine and have enough room to get to everything relatively easily, you know it is an older vehicle and will cost less to work on.
I walked into a shop where they were working on a much newer pickup and they had the cab on the car lift above the pickup and the front fenders pulled off. I asked why and was told that they had to replace the head gaskets and in order to get to the top of the engine to work on it they would either have to pull the engine out of the vehicle, which was the harder option, or remove the cab and fenders.
That tells me that they really really do not want the average person to be able to work on their own vehicles so they have to bring it in to the dealer so they can keep their shop busy.

Bought a new Frontier extended cab in 1998. Drove it for 12 years with nothing but routine maintenance. Passed it on to my son and he drove it until last year with no major issues either. Stick shift and never had a clutch replaced. He sold it last year to a guy he knows for $500 and he's still driving it.

I've been more of a car guy than a truck guy. My one exception was taking over payments of an old Ford Ranger from a cousin that grew up in my family. He was going into the Marines and just needed to get rid of the truck. It was a stick 4 banger. That thing was reliable and always easy to get fixed. It was a regular cab, which suited me fine back then. It got great gas mileage. Unfortunately, I could only go fast when going downhill. The baby engine tried. Nevertheless, it was great.
It probably could have lasted forever, and maybe I'd still be driving it if not for someone turning into me at an intersection. Because it was a cheap Ranger with a ton of miles, it was worth like a 6 pack. So it got salvaged. But I still have fond memories of that little guy. 🥹🥹🥹🥹

Got a 2015 Frontier because my F-150 got hit, and I'm OK with it for the most part. Significantly cheaper than the similarly specced Tacoma that I really wanted. Really only minor complaints with it, being that I really like the way all the controls on my F-150 and the Ranger I had before that were, but I've had it about 7-8 months now and I'm adjusting. Just minor things like the windshield wiper controls being on the opposite side, the headlight controls being on the turn signal instead of on the dash, and not having a column shifter, just to name a few. And the gas mileage is worse than my 01 Ranger was but at least it's slightly better than the F-150. Would have loved to have a Ranger of the same year if I could have, I hate that they stopped making them for the US market.

The F250 with the 5.4 is a very reliable truck. Do be aware when looking to buy one. Expect to deal with the brakes locking up, often and replacing lots of calipers and pads. It’s faster than an f150 with the 5.4 for some reason, I assume they are tuned better. And the worst part is the gas mileage, avg 10mpg, the truck will say 11.5ish. It’s sugarcoated. And also the gas needle and miles to empty display is terribly calibrated. It don’t work accurately. It’ll piss u off.

I've got a 2007 4 cylinder Frontier with 262,000 miles I bought new. I looked at the new Frontier truck made by Peugeot and I didn't like the cost of changing plugs or the weird grooves in the truck bed making cleaning it harder. The old Frontier is great for fishing trips and I don't worry about leaving the truck on the side of the road while I hike to go fish. It amazes me my 6 cylinder 10 speed F-150 gets the same 22 miles a gallon as my old Frontier. Better believe I'm babying the Ford and keeping it in top condition. The Frontier isn't pretty anymore, but it's doing the dirty work I don't want my big truck doing.
