I will always cherish my moments of playing banjo on this track for Buffy and of course John. A beautiful lasting song.....Gary Kaye Mill Valley, California
Thank you ,too,Gary Kaye, The backing musicians truly made the hits as great as they were. Certain songs just come together and meld that cannot be repeated by any remake. This redo is truly a gem all on it's own!
I cannot even begin to imagine how grand it must have been to share a stage/studio with John Stewart and Buffy Ford...I have always loved their music so much.
Even the happiest songs become sad in time..for those of us who remember it when we we all young and happy..now we're old and funky, like the razor. Yeah it's a great lasting song though. Cute, how Davy just didn't want to change the lyrics back.
awesome. what a legacy john and buffy left! and davy does a beautiful job with the song as he did originally. John was the best, waaaaaaaay underrated!!!! and probably under appreciated, but his fans were and are loyal.
John was a member of The Kingston Trio. Signed with Capitol and recorded Signals behind the Glass with Buffy, then made California Bloodlines, great records!
Rest in peace Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. I emailed Micky Dolenz in December and told him that I really enjoyed getting to see him and Mike Nesmith at the Texas Trust CU theater in October. I still have the ticket on my phone from when I saw them at the Majestic Theater in Dallas on Thursday April 16th, 2020 at 8 pm. I emailed them several days after the show and let them know how much I really enjoyed getting to see them.
Ive seen John and Buffy together several times. Once at The Birchmere Club in VA. John was onstage, and Buffy sat at a nearby table. She is always stunning. John Stewart and Davy Jones R.I.P.
I have been listening to this song recently on the Monkees greatest hits CD and love it. Also, I find it very interesting the two words that were changed from the original version. I have John Stewart's album bombs away dream babies since I was a teen and didn't realize he wrote Daydream Believer. This is a meaningful version of this song.
The original lyrics were the word funky but the record label and TV series would not use it with that word. Too Hippy I guess. It was change it to happy or we are not going to use it. Lucky He changed it as he did well with it.
Davy made another mistake with the lyrics in the opening verse. John Stewart sings" IF I could hide 'neath the wings of the bluebird as she sings, the 6 O'Clock alarm would never ring." Davy sings "OH I could hide 'neath the wings of the bluebird as she sings, the 6 O'Clock alarm would never ring." Makes no sense.
I think it still makes sense enough with "Oh" at the start. Buffy sang it that way, too. Davy changes the shaving razor line from "old" to "cold" but I think both work. Have a nice day.

Colleen, this is EXCELLENT! What a great job you did! And I just fall in love with Davy every time I see this type of thing. What a doll!
Know you know how Funky I can be ...Miss you Dave.
I remember coming back from Viet Nam In 1969.....My 1st Album I bought...."California Bloodlines"
This was only two years before Davy died. Glad it was recorded for posterity !

The neat thing was that several Sundays ago MeTV 55.1 ran episodes of the Monkees tv show all day long and I really enjoyed getting to watch them.

John Stewart and Davy Jones R.I.P.
Lovely video, Colleen! I love the harmony. How nice to see the original "Sleepy Jean".
sorry, kill bill comes to mind...RIP DAVY AND JOHN
Met Buffy and John at Passim in Cambridge...lovely couple and what a touching song when performed by John himself.

@@edchester3150 Also, the original shaving razor was old, not cold
