Justin AND Steve, great presentation. The interview opening indicated 8x24 and immediately grabbed my attention. I (WE) have a 2-car garage approximately 16x24, allotting me Steve’s similar square foot floor space. I used to own a drum sander but my ideas of having it were quickly removed by the incredible amount of frustration with its inherent design and operation. Lowering the drum onto the wood via the drum support arm was always hit or miss with accuracy. Had the table been able to be raised to meet a fixed spinning drum my problems most likely would have been solved. I took a tremendous loss on its sale. The drum sander ruined a lot more wood more than it helped bring flat. I still wish that the tool could do what I had hoped and that I was able to bring wide stock to a level and smooth surface. The best use of the drum sander was for very short narrow pieces of wood. The 16-32 design had me thinking I was able to do much larger projects than what I achieved in reality. I see many of these sanding machines being sold on the used market. If you do buy one never put on any sand paper other than 80 grit. That seemed to be the sweet spot in my experience with the machine.
Thanks for the helpful tips! I personally haven’t ever used one and yeah, I have an idea in my head of what it’s gonna be able to do for me so good to hear from somebody who’s been through it. I actually had bought one at a garage sale for $400 excited to get it for that price. I gave him the money before I played with it And then asked him to turn it on and do a whole bunch of stuff and he was saying how the knob broke and he had to adjust the belt every time with an Allen key as a drifted etc. etc. etc. so I figured it was a lemon and I got my money back… maybe more on par?
@@BitnerBuilt When you rotate the vertical adjustment clockwise you raise the horizontal position of the drum and adjustments are more positive. The problem is that you need to do the opposite because the bed is fixed. There is too much friction in the vertical support plates that it doesn’t operate smoothly no matter what you try to do. This sequence of adjustment also changes the drums parallelism to the table and creates a taper across the width of wide stock. When sanding wide stock I was also left with a rippled finish that looked like waves in the grain instead of a constant smooth surface finish even while sanding long stock at a extremely light touch. Different woods gave much different results. Some woods would create extremely hard resin to build on the sanding paper in the middle of a long board being run through the drum and the resin buildup would ruin the surface. My sanding adjustments were limited to just kissing the wood very lightly. The process was long, arduous and oftentimes painful. A hand plane can give you much better results. I used my sanding drum for wider panel glue ups and to finish sand shop cut veneers. It just didn’t work out well. I looked into newer versions of these sanders and seemed to find similar results. I just don’t believe that the engineering behind these drum sanders to be very good at all. Rarely will I even see a skilled woodworker on UA-cam using one or ever recommend one. It was in my experience that every aspect of adjustment to the machine was in a constant state of struggle to maintain. It flat out sucked.

It’s easy to do on your states website, don’t pay anyone. I personally like doing an S Corp., he first sign up as an LLC, and then file an additional piece of paper called an S Corp. election. It’s slightly more beneficial tax wise. Make sure to also register for an EIN number with the IRS it’s a free process. Of course, every business is different, I’m just assuming that you’re doing it as a small woodworking business.

Can you recommend a decent but not too expensive table saw?
Well depends on the “grade” your looking for. They start off with the portable Job site saws. The dewalt job site saw has a decent fence. If your looking for a decent cast iron table saw the delta sold at Lowe’s is what I own and it’s excellent for the price point ~$700 I have a video on table saws so you can see mine and what I have done to it there. Another option is to buy a used one and then spend money on a nice aftermarket fence as the fence is the big thing with all your choices.
I’ve never heard of a bandsaw box. Please explain
So a bandsaw box uses one large block of wood, solid, and then only using a bandsaw you end up creating what looks like a drawer inside a solid block of wood. It’s a little bit difficult for me to just explain here so I would recommend googling a beginners bandsaw box very fun to make, and come out really attractive, especially if before you start making it, you layer a whole whole bunch of species of wood to make your block

Is that your old apron.i thought you were going to a new one
It is my old apron, I did like the new one however, it didn’t work for video, the straps are leather and where they attach to the grommets in the front it made a squeaking noise all the time right into my microphone, so I had to stop using it
@@BitnerBuilt so did you go back to your old apron for good cuz I was thinking about getting that other one. So maybe I should look at here while I'm fit double X or bigger guy
@@ronkerouac309 I would recommend the one that I’m not wearing, I liked it much better. It’s just it didn’t work for video. And it’s super adjustable. It doesn’t matter your size it’ll fit.
