That mug is an award winner! I really enjoy looking at that!!!! We got yellow clay, we have grey clay, and we have hard hard Iron oxide slip!!!! I will sell some smectite, and I will sell some grey, but the yellow is too rare!!

Nice reminds me of a song my mom taught me - the colors I mean...
I was watching one of your old live streams and someone asked about blood in paint. I’ve come to my own conclusions that it has the same properties as egg yolk and can be used as a binder in the same way for mineral paint. I personally use yolk for that because it’s the most accessible in my area.. and it doesn’t run away

This is great, thanks for the lesson and all the pottery examples are beautiful! I’m excited to share this with my partner who is a budding ceramicist. I’m inspired too to go out and forage materials!
I’m wondering about your language too, I noticed you speak in the past tense about many of the techniques and materials used from different cultures. However many of these cultures still survive today and continue their arts, like you mentioned with the Hopi yellow-ware. I’m not sure if this is something you script intentionally or not but I thought it would be worthwhile to bring to your attention. It’s important for us to remember that this ancient knowledge is present not only in historical references but also carried out presently by the people who inherit its culture.
Thanks again for sharing what you know, I invite conversation on this, hope to hear your thoughts.
I am focused on recreating the pottery from lost cultures. Cultures that no-one is even sure who their descendants are today. In those cases it is past tense because when they moved away they abandoned their old ways of making pottery.

Great info Andy..the part about the copper and manganese firing off colour. Yellow i have found in very small amounts..ok for slip/paint . Its yellow and fires yellow.,strange as you say most is grey. I tried to make a small bowl with it, non plastic and you know when its just not right . im leaving a small amount in a bag to age for a few months..

@@AncientPottery not bad, mostly it's staying east of us. It rained sideways for a little while yesterday LOL but today it's just kind of a constant slow drip.
You can find manganese dioxide (and zinc metal!) in regular alkaline batteries if you're up for the challenge of opening them up! Will try that soon

@@AncientPottery Yeah it was probably not a great idea to write it! The insides are pretty alkaline (no way!) and can give lye burns.
Andy, in my state there is a pretty significant green strip of clay across the center, intersecting with my property. I am willing to experiment with it on my own, but I was wondering if you happen to know if green clay will make green pottery? I can't find many sources, and the Lenape don't have many surviving examples to peruse.
Can glaze be used with the non kiln methods?
I ran across a UA-camr that calls himself New Mexico Ruins. He goes to different ruins in the New Mexico area and shows people what he finds. He shows a lot of pot shards that have patterns and paint different from what I've seen you replicate. The one that grabbed my attention was a bluish color. I went o line to find out who made blue pottery. What I found was delft was the first notable blue. When I tried to find who may have traded blue I wondered if the Mayan blue clay could have ever been traded. I learned that it is a fel spare clay that is found close to simiktite clay. It is called phyllosilicate clay. Have you heard of any such thing? Do you think it could be a painted on slip?
Blue is not possible with primitive techniques and natural products. The first blue paint on pottery in the southwest was pots brought here by the Spanish. Nowadays some Pueblo potters use commercial underglaze paints to get blue designs. Mayan Blue is an organic pigment so if it was used on pottery it was applied after firing, this stuff would never have been traded this far north.
@AncientPottery Ty. That is what I thought, but the pictures I saw looked very blue. It must have been the camera used and the fact that it was on tv. Then the fact I could not find any material in that area that produce any shade of a lot.

The black is probably organic matter that will burn away in the fire. So your guess is as good as mine.

I have black clay in my part of Illinois. It fires with uneven coloration ranging between off pink cream to brown and salmon pink

You left out orange. Which the majority of my local clays seem to fire. 😂
A lot of orange pottery is often just called “red ware”. But yes, that is a fairly common color.
Hi Andy, The black manganese dioxide paint I used on two of my pots came out brown because of a lack of oxygen during firing. Can I refire those in a more oxygenated atmosphere to get them to turn black or is it too late for them?😅
Yes, re-fire until you get it right
I harvested some local clay that is an olive yellow when wet. Just made my first bowl with it. I'm very curious to see what color it fires to but mostly just hope it doesn't blow up
Interesting.
Yellow oxides are usually iron. Greens are usually copper. Your firing atmosphere will probably have some effect of what color it fires

Yes but don't eat them

Yeah. Rust is basically the same thing as the other red minerals because they’re all just iron oxide. You will want to thicken it with something though. I use egg yolk and 33% clay. I also press it into the pot for redundancy
