Great Video. For future references. I'd use rubber gloves when things get moldy. I did "Something Similar" but I used brown rice and worm bin to get mine activated. Then just used it to feed back to worms. Lol. I'm looking forward to follow up video.
Nice! Glad it worked out the first time. That's always exciting. Interested to see some of the next steps and where it goes from here. Thanks for sharing the experience!
Yup. You're growing mushrooms. That's important. They help with soil aeration, and they provide food for stuff you plant. You did this in the desert with the Shiitake blocks. Where I am there's five different kinds of shrooms growing in the woods and fallen trees here. I found some awesome white oysters growing from a fallen willow down in a creek bed.
The white fuzzy stuff is mycelium. The off white portions are mold. To culture the mycelium only a sterile portion is sufficient. When mycelium runs its usually a day. If any longer, mold & other bacteria growth occurs. The sterile portion can then be added to a sterile media like oats, wood, saw dust or a sugar solution. It then can run fully and completely. There are couple of hundred strains found but 2 types of mycelium ectomycorrhizal & endomycorrhizal are most beneficial for creating the network chains in garden soils.
Mycelium is highly dependent on conditions - also different species have different inoculation times. Not looking for completely sterile here, but rather, a balanced collection of microbes as a seed culture.
I need to try that experiment at home. Thanks for sharing. This video made me smile from the awkward woman playing with fungi beginning to the stormy shouting end.
The indications of good IMO are a lack of bad odors, a predominantly white mass (not red or black), and mycelium that can hold all the grains of rice into one mass.

It's possible! There are also lignin digesting mycelium in this part of the forest that are that orange, though they don't tend to get that level of coverage on substrate in less than a week. safety tip, never lift something like a lid or rock towards yourself, only away from you. Snakes tend to spring, so make sure it's away from you. Also, mold can be extremely dangerous, I cringed watching this video knowing what I know about mold, next time where a face mask
Good call on the snakes. I hadn't seen any in this part of the woods so I wasn't seriously concerned, but you never know. And totally agree on the face mask. It just didn't work so well with the microphone, but I should've mentioned it as a suggestion. Was dying for hours after. 😂
i dont know what the hell your saying, butt i sure do like the way u say it.
Haha still learning how to describe it myself! 😂
why dont you want certain colors?
Because they indicate the presence of less desirable microbial life that you likely don't want to create more of (and/or may "contaminate" your eventual mix.)
Oh how exciting. Please no mold, or snakes, or anything bad. Fingers still crossed. :-P
It was a nail biter! 😂
@@VeronicaFlores Very exciting stuff. Love gardening, especially when I learn new things. Thank you senpai. :-P

In biology, ratios don't need to be exact.
Agreed. So many things to account for, like temperature and humidity too! That's why I sort of measure and sort of eyeball, just like I do with baking. 🙂
