Unfortunately though, switching doctors too often sends up red flags that a patient is "difficult" or doctor shopping and then no doctor wants to treat. It's a Catch 22...stick with a doctor you don't really like and at least have a doctor or leave to find a better doctor and take the chance of not finding one 🤷‍♀️ It definitely sucks for those of us with chronic illness :/

I honestly think it's selfish of your old doctor to refuse to prescribe you medicine you clearly NEED just because they have a bias; it's not like you're smoking it and getting high, it's drops that stop the puking and nausea. You can so clearly see how much you have improved on it, and to refuse you treatment and care because you're looking for alternatives to man-made medicines (which there is nothing wrong with, but they haven't worked as well as this does for you) is really judgemental and selfish, and goes against the "do no harm" aspect of the Hippocratic oath.

I've had to fire doctors who refused to listen to me. I live with chronic conditions too and I've encountered doctors who try to treat me like a child, which I don't tolerate.

How do you avoid the "doctor shopping" label? I am going through leaving a doctor now, and the replacement was worse. I was told that I could see as many replacement doctors that I need to, to find one that works for me, but a doctor told me to be aware that this can cause me to be considered to be "doctor shopping". I was actually told to stop researching on my own and to "trust" the doctor's advice.

    • @samtrujillojr
      @samtrujillojr 5 років тому +1

@@SweetPea112 the legal definition of doctor shopping involves intent to commit fraud. You are purposely going from doc to doc just to get meds with no intension of staying put. He's just trying to scare you into sharing. I went through 3 neurologists b4 I found the right doc. Hang in their.

    • @littlebird3167

@@SweetPea112 Honey it's unavoidable. I'm a nurse that's now sick with many chronic illnesses and I tried really hard not to doc hop because I don't have insurance and am still waiting for my disability (it's been over three years) and my 72 year old father is stuck paying for everything! So, I try to keep costs to a minimum. But, I've had to doc hop trying to find a good PCP of all things! My specialists are great but, these GPs want to change my specialists' plans and medications, I've had several that don't believe I have Lyme disease without looking at a single lab or doing any kind of exam they just know I don't have it! I do not tolerate that kind of f*ckery. And you shouldn't either. Sometimes I think they want to change things just so they seem relevant. Because anymore, all they really are needed for is to write referrals. So, I think it's an ego thing. You should research for yourself. But, don't freak yourself out with it. Doctors don't know everything and, if one is telling you to just blindly listen to what they're recommending, it's because they can't stand that a patient might be right and they might be wrong. And us women get it a lot more than men do. Everything is in our heads according to them and that is not an exaggeration. I've heard how they talk about female patients. And they do it to me too! So, keep that in mind, stand up for yourself and fire as many doctors as you want until you find the right one.

I don't know what you think about it, but to me it almost feels like a lot of these pain managment doctors are "owned" by the pharmaceutic lobbies... Obviously cannabis has so many beneficial effects that it can be substituted to quite a few different types of medecine, ultimately making pharmaceutical companies less money, so they're quite unlikely to be pro cannabis. And we all know how these companies find different ways to "push" their drugs through doctors so that they get prescribed over other drug options.
I feel you on this, it's unfair for a doctor to somehow decide that you don't get to have your medical cannabis anymore if you want her to treat you. It's not like you're forcing her to take the stuff in the first place, and she's not the one having to deal with all the effects if you go off your treatment just to suit her point of view.
I'm sending you all of my thoughts and love, and crossing my fingers that you'll be able to find a treatment that suits you and your body, and that lets you get the relief you definitely deserve!
Love to you, Judd, and of course Hippo :)

You are 100% correct. Pain management doctors, in particular, thrive (and quite literally make all of their money) off prescribing patients heavy narcotics. They realize Cannabis is a huge threat, not only to pharmaceutical companies but also to them. They know Medical Cannabis can almost completely replace pharmaceuticals, and they're petrified.
It's so selfish of them to push their own financial agenda on sick patients. Patients have no choice but to trust their doctors; they're taking full advantage of that fact.
Cannabis is the future, but they're too scared to change with the times... because they'll be out of a job.

I just had to switch pain mgmt docs after TEN YEARS (due to insurance) and I am finding out that while the CDC's "guidance" use to be 130 morphine equivalent units (don't ask me how you even calculate that bc morphine affects me totally differently than my regular meds!!) has been DROPPED TO 90 Equivalent units!! This means that in order to keep even 1/2 of my original dose of Fentanyl I have to drop my as needed Oxy down 5mg!! If you ask me the CDC needs to STAY OUT OF THE DOCTORS OFFICE!!! I’m fed up of the moral judgement that comes with chronic pain. Apparently random members of the public have ‘high pain thresholds’, the implication that those with chronic pain are weak. In fact it has been shown that those with chronic pain actually have a greater ability to cope and with pain. Took me years before I was prescribed adequate pain relief.
    Wishing you well

    • @s_rofbear
      @s_rofbear 5 років тому +2

India McMillan-Dickman - I’m one of those random members of the public with a high pain threshold, and I also suffer from chronic pain (I have EDS, as well as a bunch of other stuff).
Having a high pain threshold means I can cope with more pain than the average person, before needing intervention. It does NOT mean that I can bear an infinite level of pain! Doctors seem to think anyone seeking help with pain is just a wuss. I’m like, “My pain threshold is high, but I still HAVE a threshold - there’s still a line where pain becomes too much to bear!”

I've been following your story since you feeding tube chronicles started. There was one vlog that always stuck out to me, when you had an infection (I think) in your feeding tube and the doctor ripped it out without warning or consent. You said how you wished you had been more of a voice for yourself and had stopped him. Now look how far you've come. Because of you I now sleep in a bed (saw the video on the adjustable bases you got) instead of a recliner like I did for so many years due to my chronic neck pain. What happened isn't fair! I too live in Florida. It took too long to get the new medical marijuana laws passed and, unfortunately, too many in our society as well as the medical community have been slow to come around and educate themselves. My sister has juvenile polyarticular rheumatoid positive arthritis and she was on never ending narcotics that were just being increased in dose. But not giving much relief. One night she cried because she couldn’t get up her 5 steps into her home. Our neighbor carried her in. She didn’t like that hopeless feeling. She’s a teacher at a college. One day she decided to have a open discussion with her students on struggles with academics. She was ready for the work, not understanding material struggles, but many of her students shared their mental health and chronic illness struggles. Anyways in that conversation one of her students shared how her passion was to become a nurse. But that she had started experiencing extreme pain which wasn’t good with the long hours she had to stand. She was on a pill after pill regimen. Then one of her fellow nursing classmates shared that she had done biomagnetism for her pain relief and gave my sisters student her doctors information. Her student shared that after 2 sessions she was able to get relief with just over the counter medication. And after 2 months hasn’t needed any more pain meds. My sister has had 3 sessions and is able to handle small workouts which help to tone and make her stronger long term. It was a definite game changer. Sometimes with uncommon pain you have to find uncommon treatments. Who cares if people think your doing something wrong, they aren’t experiencing the pain.

“We got this!” Thank you so much. As a fellow pain warrior and Christian; I needed to hear this today. I am in almost the exact same situation you are. I live in central FL, am in constant, severe pain, and have to continually remind my doctors that QUALITY of life is very important. My current pain doc recommends cannabis, and I have been trying it a bit longer than you. Like you, it has greatly helped my eating (My docs were greatly concerned with my malnourishment/ inability to keep most food down, etc.), but as of yet I have not been able to get pain control (but I have faith that with the right guidance and experimentation I will also be able to find pain control as well). I just recently, just weeks ago, found a good/ knowledgeable cannabis doctor, and I will start on his recommendations soon. However, due to Florida’s new pain guidelines, my pain doctor has no choice but to lower my pain meds to a level that barely keeps me able to sit in a recliner. I am going to have to find a new one soon, at his encouragement, as he wants me to get the help I need, but his hands are tied by the government. I have been scared, terrified, depressed, discouraged, etc... My parents (and they are also my caregivers), have helped me to remain faithful to God, trusting that He will guide me to where I need to go. I know He will do the same for you. I hope we can find a way to help each other; as we are so close to each other and have the same ‘rules’ affecting us. I felt so alone in my predicament, and though I am really sorry that you have to go through this as well, and would love to keep you from having to deal with the stress, it helps to know ‘we’ (including others in your comments) are not alone. We can trust and lean on God and each other. Thank you again for sharing with us. I lift you up in prayer, and ask God that He guide you, give you strength, cure your pain, and bring you joy. May you and your family have a blessed weekend.

Hallo Jaquie, I am from Germany and in this country they are still thinking about leaglizingmedical marajuana. Well, no cannabis for me until now.
But when you mentioned you could get Tramadol, liquid, I listened closer. You never had Tramadol before?
Well, I am using Tramadol for m peak pain to get better instantly. My primary care doctor prescribes me a bottle with 100ml of 100mg Tramadol. When I am in so much unbearable pain (neuropathic pain in multiple sclerosis) I am taking40 drops of Tramadol and about half an hour later I am much better.
But Tramadol is a very addictive drug. I know that my body is addicted to Tramadol. MY mind says : well I can do without! BUT my body says: give me that dug right now!
But you always have to die one death....
hope your new pain management doctor can help you combine both, the medical cannabis and the "normal" pain meds.
Crossing my fingers for you, as you could cross your fingers for the pain warriors in Germany to get cannabis released legally soon!
    Thanks
    Britta

Oh, how I know this struggle. Its ABSOLUTELY crazy how chronic pain patients are treated. Thankfully here in Mi my GP handles my pain meds right now. I have been sent to several pain clinics and they ALWAYS treat me like an addict and it is horrible!!! I FREAK out thinking about losing my pain meds, and most people really don't understand. I can ONLY go to work and take care of my house because of the pain meds(which never take the pain away, just dulls it to manageable). I hope you find a solution with the new Dr. Being in chronic pain everyday, every moment is hard enough to deal with without the added stressors 😤😤

The state I live in just passed a medical marijuana bill last year. It specifically states that if a patient has a medical canabis card and a doctor prescribes opiates the doctor who wrote that prescription is disciplined. The other catch is there isn't a state database of medical marijuana patients yet.

Sorry for your struggles. I too suffer from chronic pain ... pain Dr told me to take Tylenol (can’t take anything stronger in the otc/nsaid category due to other meds) and set up appt to have my spinal nerves blocked then possibly ablated. But due to recent surgery complication I am deathly afraid of more invasive procedures and don’t trust them anymore. No less invasive suggestions & no narcotic pain meds given. Other drs will not even consider narcotic pain meds anymore due to opioid crisis. I cry all the time and have no real quality of life. I’d completely give up if it weren’t for my sweet daughter who I just couldn’t do that to. But it’s torture. I hope and pray you and I & others suffering will find relief somehow.

      B. Personal experience on the nerve oblation! Be prepared the testing faze of the procedure done twice isn’t too bad however the actual oblation is a different story! The first day isn’t bad but the next few days that follow can be hell as the nerve dies off! For me the procedure I had done on my neck lasted about a year with full pain control then over the next 6 months I could tell that the nerves were regenerating and my pain returned.
I’m not trying to scare you off from the procedure but just wish I had someone warn me of the impending major ouch that was coming!
Hell I took the side ejection option while pole bending (horse+ 6 poles+ at speed normally = fun) but add in my own stubbornness and a nasty 2 week long vertigo attack and I went down hard! Popped every vertebrae from S-1 to about T-10 and stretched every muscle in my right side! That actually hurt less than the oblation procedure on my neck. So be ready with lots of ice packs they do help some but a burn is still a burn!

B, I have had the spinal blocks & ablations multiple times. THEY WORK!! The ablations will last much longer than the blocks but both work. As long as you have a COMPETENT PAIN DR. who does these types of procedures on a REGULAR BASIS you really don't need to be scared bc they are really no more invasive than a deep injection and its all guided by xray flourscopy

I am so sorry. I have a pain pump due to a spinal cord injury. I have had so many Dr's refuse to treat me due to the complexity of my case. In fact I was in the hospital and it took them 3 weeks to find a Dr willing to touch my case. There is nothing more horrible then to be in this position. It makes one feel like u have the plague. It makes me scared for my future. Wish I could reach thru your screen to provide you with a hug and let u know u are not alone. Something has to be done to protect those of us who truly need pain mgmt. We did not ask for daily pain.

It's happened to me several times too but, I have to say, I "respect" those doctors for saying no rather than taking the case when they have no clue what to do. I've had that happen too and that's way worse because they can cause permanent damage like they have done to me. I actually got better for about a month but, a dumbass doctor that didn't understand my case prescribed a medication that made me bed bound again. My specialist said I never should have been given that drug in the first place. So, it's better than a situation like that or wasting time and money with a doctor who is scared and clueless and just guessing.

We just saw a pain mgmt doc (new to us), not even considering pain pumps anymore, because opioids are supposedly evil even at the small doses in a pump, so pushing spinal cord stimulators (can cause arachnoiditis as well as scarring of already misfiring spinal nerves)! WTF!?!!

Hey Jaquie! I just wanted to say that first off I LOVE your haircut and also glasses! Secondly I love that your ring matches your outfit how cute!! And thirdly I’m very sorry you have to go through this type of stuff with your doctors. I understand how doctors can be with no answers and only wanting things to be how they want it. Which is absolutely NOT FAIR. But I also really appreciate the fact you can still find positivity in it all and just look ahead. No you do not want to go backwards that would be ridiculous. Look out for yourself and your benefit and don’t let them try to control you. They make all the money and they couldn’t really be bothered with your problems. You’ll find someone who cares and can be amazingly helpful for sure!! Prayers to you! Also I just want to say that it really is wonderful seeing you much happier and also gaining that healthy good weight where you have the ability to do more and be more comfortable in day to day life and not depend on feeds so much. Finding good doctors are far and few between. I live in Florida and have MS, I have dealt with pain management doctors and I feel like I was treated as not-trusted, always having to prove as was not taking “street drugs” as they call them. I can feel your pain emotionally, I have developed depression lately, as I feel frustrated with the medical community. My health insurance does not cover the medication I take and I don’t know if I will be able to afford it, I don’t qualify for any help because I still work and “make too much money”. I realize I need to be treated for the depression as well, as I am seeing myself fall apart. Thank you for your encouraging words, I am a fighter, but some days I just need some help and a little break.

Living in chronic pain, I was told that pain management could not help me, because the non-cancerous tumor on my spine "does not cause pain" although the doctor admits that the tumor is exactly where my pain is. I take Gabapentin (600 mg at bed and 300 mg in the afternoon) and get some relief, but I could barely get out of bed today. Unfortunately I cannot afford CBT and anything with THC makes me vomit (has the reverse affect on me that it has on most people..something in our genetics as I am not the only one in my family who cannot take it). I was told pain management "would not touch" my case, when I BEGGED for spinal injections.

I am in a similar situation kinda pain doctors in Arizona won't allow you to take cannabis at all.. I have been on pain meds for almost two years I went from completely hospital/bed bound but with the pain meds able to care for my daughter again (server autism 6yr old) now they are telling me they are taking me off all my meds.. just 1 dose down 6 days in back to being bed bound 😭 and having to rely on others to help with the care of my child 😭 💔 thanks to the new law that was signed it's literally killing people and this is a worse crisis then the one they thought they were fighting.. locally a news story was put out talking about the rate of suicide and the huge increase in sick patients all saying they can't live in pain and doctors won't listen! Mine won't either they refuse to help. I haven't eaten any food in 2 years only on tpn and iv hydration GI and surgeons said no cure hunker down take your pain meds and wait for a cure.. now what?!

OMG Jaquie, this is so incredibly unfair. This is exactly why the federal laws need to change. It shouldn't be that a doctor can force you to chose between eating or managing pain. I agree on the vaping. Effects are immediate (within minutes), and most likely you will only need a few pulls to feel relief. There has to be a strain out there that will help you. There are hundreds if not thousands of different types. I'm praying you find one that works for you and you won't even need a pain management doctor anymore. I'm so sorry you're going through this. You have all my love and support and my fingers and toes are crossed for you! hugs

Oh Jaquie! I wish I could give you a hug right now. I'm so sorry that your previous PM doctor's office went that direction with their policies. I also see a PM physician and sometimes I feel like she is more paranoid about medicine policies than the rest of my medical team. All of these new rules are not fair to those of us dealing with pain and need help. Yes, I understand that there are folks out there that have abused the system and the meds so the government is trying to prevent that. However, in my case and it sounds like in your case, the only thing these policies do is make it next to impossible for us to get the help we need to lead a normal life. You and I are responsible with our health and our medications. We do not deserve to be punished and not receive proper medical care because someone else messed it up abusing the system. I'm so glad that the rest of your team believes in the care you have been getting and referred you to the new physician. I hope this new doctor can help you get a new plan started and will be as supportive as the rest of your team. A couple of years ago I had a similar situation where my PM doc could no longer prescribe one of my meds. She totally supported me taking the med she just couldn't prescribe it. So my PCP and PM doc had a discussion and my PCP was allowed to prescribe the medication the PM doc couldn't. By chance, could another team member be willing to prescribe the narcotic medication and your new physician prescribe the cannabis? Just a thought of something you could discuss with them. I really hope you and your team can come up with a new plan quickly. You are not alone and you're in my prayers. We are pain warriors and we got this!

I deal with very different issues but I can totally relate to how you feel. I have several chronic mental health issues like anxiety, depression and insomnia, as well as chronic migraines, and I recently moved to a different country where I have to deal with an entirely different healthcare system and doctors. I've been waiting for months to get an appointment with a psychiatrist just to find out that the department of psychiatry said that based on my medical records they thought I didn't need to see one and refused to give me an appointment. They simply suggested that my GP take me off all of my meds except for one. that without even seeing me or talking to me. So it has been really frustrating, and I really get how you feel when you say it's so exhausting to have to fight to get the care you need.

Ugh I wish I didn't relate to this so hard but I do. It's taken YEARS for me to find a pain doctor that was okay with my medical cannabis use and would also prescribe the pain medications I needed to function on really bad days. I'm in a different stand still with him right now, he doesn't want to continue giving me medication until I get steroid injections - which my specialist has advised me not to get bc they're contraindicated for my condition. I too haven't found a cannabis product that has helped with my pain and I feel like I've tried everything. I hope we both find the relief we need!

In my personal opinion, the pain management Drs that refuse to work with medical cannabis are slaves to big pharma $ and therefore care more about $ than accepting an all natural alternative to narcotics.
