SNL could have just kept going with Stephon having an unrequited crush on Seth and it would have been very funny. The fact that over time Seth came to reciprocate his feelings was an unexpectedly sweet and beautiful thing, and I suspect that’s why we’re all so emotionally invested in their relationship. Seth’s response after Stephon announced his engagement and left is legit one of the greatest and most affecting pieces of acting I have seen on SNL - the way he tries to carry on with Weekend Update while his inner turmoil becomes more and more apparent is just exquisite. Of course, the fact that Stephon and Seth are both adorable helps a lot too! 🙂
