When you prop swing don’t swing the lower prop, it’s much easier and safer swinging the higher prop it gives you more space and it’s much more comfortable with less chance of falling into the prop. Greetings from SA
Duncan Ritchie Exactly. Also I have taken my blade off and rotated the alignment by one set of holes to get it where I want it. I also carry a spare glove as my composite blade is sharp. I started to hand prop from behind,, just feels safer.
Trent, the safest way to hand start is to: 1) switches and mags off. It can’t fire. 2) pull the prop through to the top. 3) switches on, mags on, brakes on. 4) swing your right leg TOWARDS the plane, and as it swings back, pull the prop. Your momentum, caused by the leg swing will pull you away from the prop. I used to do this on my dad’s Aeronca when I was 12. Piece of cake.
Never assume it "can't fire" / start with MAG's off. Than can get you killed/injured. A bad connection on how mags are off, shorted to ground and the motor can start when prop is pulled through. Stay safe, never assume anything is safe when it is your life, it is always your responsibility for your own safety, no one else's is. Others doing something as turning mags off should Never be relied on. Trust but verify, it will save your life and prevent injuries.
Trent, You're pooch at the end gave you away on your eating habits. That looked like a bone from a cowboy Ribeye. ha. Keep on enjoying the good life and the fun flying. I;m an old RC'er and am thinking of building a 1/4 scale or maybe bigger of your Plane with all the same options of flaps and scuff controls, plus the big tires. Whatchia think?
I think you’ll be a little bored with how long it takes to get anywhere in one of these planes. Sometimes I see kids on skateboards passing me up on the ground........
I live vicariously through you. Your flying adventures are amazing and so is your cinematography. I live alone and its lonely during covid19 lockdown. Your videos take me to another place, thank you!
I'm an old pilot but not an old bold pilot, I HAD A Stinson 108-3, it was a very forgiving plane. I lived in Northern Idaho and the worst back country field I've been in was Moose creek and fish lake. I admire what you boys do, if I was younger and in better health I might do that too.
Trent, thank you, thank you for the comment about no pressure to land. Personal limits can certainly change just on how sharp you're feeling that day! I've said 'no' to landing sometimes at a place or in conditions that I had experienced plenty of times, but I just wasn't feeling it that day.
Trent, just some info on the hand prop... the safest way to do it is to get close to the prop standing up straight, put your back foot forward, and as you start to spin the prop have your forward foot moving back... that way your momentum is away from the prop and you're no longer leaning into it as in this video... from an old taylorcraft pilot.
In the world as it is so nice seeing peeps having fun. If only i was 20-30yrs younger i would love to learn to fly , But watching ur vids is the next best thing. Keep them vids coming fella n tc
Back in the day I laid down a chunk of cash on a 5 blade WarpDrive prop for my O-540 powered Air Gator..and quickly found that 1- ground adjustable props are a PITA and 2- They do not do well trying to produce max load static thrust, the blades just bend. Expensive lesson learned part 1. Part 2 was ordering a custom double width Sensenich. Emergency war power restored and no more getting stuck on black sandbars 😄 Thanks for sharing your day with us Trent!
Another wonderful video of flying where I think it should be done - in back country with no defined landing strip and some really challenging options. Thanks for taking the time to do this video Trent. It is appreciated and enjoyed.
Trent, between you and Mike Patey you have helped keep me sane during this pandemic. I am still instructing 5 or 6 students and flying my RANS S6 as much as we can as well. We, on this side of the country, really appreciate your adventures and encouragement to keep us positive and flying. BTW, that's the first time I have seen anyone hand prop a Rotax engine. I have done that on a number of other aircraft engines but never a Rotax. Nice to know that is can be done though. Just another tool for my aviation tool-kit...
I am glad you are going to be in Benton Ks in July. I follow Juan Browne and he had Dan Gryder on his channel a couple days ago, We need more solid Aviation promoters out there.
hand prop the cub alot..o 235 not a giant engine. i do it from the back though ,one hand on the door frame one foot under the wheel..old j3 pilot taught me how
Cool to see a T-38 appearance at 1:25...Pretty much the exact opposite of the STOL aircraft these guys usually fly!...rotate speed in a T-38 is faster than their max cruise haha. And a minimum runway of 8000 ft required. Never thought i'd see one on this channel, pretty cool!
“Filming with the GoPro” Love it! Now I don’t feel like a goofball for saying that. Hand propping an airplane is very unnerving! 😳 Good job as always! Thx man.
I always hand propped my high performance Pitts S1S. However, those lightweight three blade propellers are very dangerous to hand prop. They spin up so quickly to high RPM like a model airplane. Scary.
same here! ive had access to a certified flight instructor my whole life; my father. and im 25 without my pilots license. i think the biggest thing for me was i didnt feel like there was an aviation niche that i fit into. I knew bush flying existed but i thought it was only the kind of thing people do to get cargo and people and supplies into hard the reach areas. had no idea there was an entire recreational side to it. Trent might have rekindled my desire to be a pilot.
Rotax engines WILL kick back, as the reason for not curling your fingers around the trailing edge. Also, as with a firearm, always assume it is loaded, (mag(s) hot). Communication between pilot and propper should be very clear and precise. Respecting hand propping should be as important as respecting the decision to land or not to land.
Trent your videos have got me excited about aviation and video editing. I have started an online course for Adobe Premiere Pro. I now understand why video editing is so time consuming. This makes me appreciate your videos even more. Your editing is great. Oh your story line and flying is also ok too. 😂😂

LOL...great vid...I could feel your "cringe" hand starting that plane...lol...and when he ran long on that takeoff...good job...really enjoy seeing you guys fly into all the private runways back country...
Hi Trent! I have been following yor channel for some time. I like your videos especialy about aviation. Every time you fly you make comment on the spots where you land. If I can suggest to make a video about how you choose a new spot, about safty issues upon landing and takeoff. Something about your safe rules for landing and takeoffs. Thanks and keep up the good work! :)
I fly into bush locations every day for work, but this looks like 10x more fun being able to do it with friends. I've never thought I wanted to own my own plane until now. How man to gallons per hour does your kitfox burn?

As a 911 dispatcher, THANK YOU FOR NOT HANGING UP!!! Accidental dials happen, and it makes everything go so much smoother when you stay on the line.
Hello fellow 911 Dispatcher, was going to say the exact same thing till I saw your comment. Thank you!
I so love the bit about you saying 'don't be afraid to say no to landing.' That's awesome.

Heavy leather work gloves might be a good idea if you do much pulling on that prop. That sharp edge can get old if that becomes a habit.
Always always use wheel chocks!!!
