Thankfully, these come preprogrammed with the channels most people are going to use. Plus these would be handy during SHTF.

BEWARE. I HAVE A 5 WATT VERSION AND I LOVE IT. I BOUGHT AN 8 WATT VERSION AND THE SCREEN FLICKERS BADLY WHEN I SCAN MODE AND IT SCANS AT HALF THE SPEED OF THE 5WATT. I RETURNED FOR ANOTHER 8WATT AND THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED. WHEN SCANNING, THE SCREEN FLICKERS AND IS VERY SLOW. I'M HAPPIER WITH THE 5WATT VERSION OF THIS RADIO.

My 5 watt and 8 watt scan at the exact same speed. The only flicker I get is the channel numbers as they are changing, the rest of the screen stays normal.

Hi, does the 8 watt give you any more Fars than the 5watt?

No, you will get pretty much the same performance. A better antenna would make a bigger difference.
