I have been saving the 1982 cents since, well, 1982. I have an old cheese jar that I put them in. I got a scale back in Sept for my birthday and I pulled out about half the 1982's to weigh the difference between the copper and newer zinc planchets only to find out that the scale only goes to the 10th and not the 100th. So I shelved that idea and concentrated on separating the large and small dates. After a couple dozen of both, entirely basing my decision on the 2 and not the 8, and made a makeshift teeter totter type scale using a known zinc planchet date and a known copper planchet date to calibrate and separated them according to weight. By the time I was done with that 3-4 dozen or so 1982 cents, I had 2-3 1982 D small date coins. But now, learning all this new information, I have to get myself a 'real' scale, use a microscope and start all over. Fun. But thank you for this very informative and well presented video!

Thanks for the info about the size of the 8. However, you didn't explain why or difference between the lighter and heavier coins. The heavier (3.11 grams) ones are the old configuration of 95% copper whereas the new lighter weight (2.5 grams) ones are the 95% zinc with a copper coating. Also, you can tell the difference by dropping the coins onto a hard surface. The older copper coins have a higher pitch ringing compared to the newer post 1982 pennies.

Did say all 1982 are copper, but half of them are. 1983 isn't copper but some have been found on copper.
Good afternoon sir, I have two 1982 D pennies (small) that weigh only 2.5 grams are they worth anything? I watched your video and everything about these pennies are spot on except for the weight. Is this unusual?
So I've been in the last year pretty adamantly collecting coins primarily for my kids looking for errors and varieties mostly in Pocket Change my dad had a few coins which I inherited when he passed however I was just going through a large jar of pennies that I've been saving for a vacation and I found a 1982 small date d and I'm almost certain that is exactly what it is it weighs 3.1 grams and the two is of a different font as you showed I have never had a coin graded before upon inspection underneath of the microscope I can tell that it is not as high of grade as the other two examples there almost appears to be some doubling on the front of the coin as well as a few Nicks your explanation was great my only question could be cleared up by sending you a picture of the coin if I could figure out how to do that lol
Hello Jason Bennett I am so curious how did this find turn out for you?
@@johnmorgan3083 I placed the coin in a collection to be passed on to my kids noted the variety and the possibility watch several more videos on it all of which seem to point to the fact that it is that coin however the condition of the coin would lead to the value being much less than one in mint state of course
@@jasonbennett3994 I really enjoyed your find I have just begun to go through a mess of pennies and I would hope to find a treasure like you did Thanks for the delight. John Morgan
I appreciate the detailed information thank you
Thank you
Thanx for the info !
Did the Denver mint accidentally stamp a large date 1982 D close AM penny that weighs 3.09 grams
Nope, they did it on purpose, it's common to find those and why I did a video on the small date Denver only.
@@CoinHELPu thank you
Thank u Daniel
I have one of these, where can I sell it?
Yea mines good..what do I do now? I'm trying to find your website or that link you sent me to send you a picture of this but I can't find it
