Did more or less the same thing a couple of days ago, before seeing this video. Used a hexagon shape then made three squares with the pen tool and then added three different shades of one colour.
Hey there , I like your videos a lot , it's simple but very good methods can be learnt , I'd be glad if you make ' how to make a portrait design background in Adobe Illustrator ' . Regards- Manzar Habib.
great one Justin ; but what i liked more is you did a voiceover and explanation rather than some vdos on youtube just having blank music ; becomes easy when u explain ; keep teaching ;
Thank you for this great tutorial! Do you know how I can save this pattern to my library so I can add it to other shapes? Also, I can't seem to get the right edge of the dartboard to have a half/whole cube on the end. Every time I change the artboard size the fill just adjusts to the new artboard size and leaves a 1/8 of new cube showing. Can you help please? Thank you.
Try making your pattern grey, then create a rectangle the size of the pattern, add a gradient with the desired colors, and then change the blend mode to color.
when i do it not all the sides touch and I can see through to the background... why does illustrator never work in real life like it does in tutorials???
Well as usual, my Illustrator just doesn't do what the tutorial does. Holding shift snaps the line to a completely different trajectory. And nothing snaps the ends of the lines to the corners of the hexagon.
CS6 is now almost 10yrs old. Most of my tutorials won’t be applicable to that version, unfortunately. However, when possible, I’ll try to outline ways you can accomplish the same effect.

Great and easy. D you know about any plugins or program for more advanced patterns?

Hi when I make my pattern I get some spacing between my cubes, you know how I can correct this? cheers
thank you!
how can I make a pattern with more than one shape?
why did college teach me none of this?! :-o
Haley Tice Thanks for the tutorials!
can i do this but have it has three different layers for each side? like one layer for the tops, one for left side and one for right side?
Can I do this on InDesign as well?
also how can I make this into a repeat?
Um how can I fill gradient fill in pattern like it's yellow half board and half blue?

I found the solution. Select your entire polygon, after using the line tool, and click Make Pixel Perfect. Now it will be divided properly.
Or, Go to View -> Snap To -> Disable Snap to Pixel
im having the same problem did you manage to fix it? :P
How can I save this pattern so i can use it on photoshop? :O
+Mariana Pérez Palomo save it a a png resize it probably is your best bet
