  • Curious how to get started shaping your own climbing holds? Join us as we discuss all the tools you'll need to get started, what you need to know about foam, and some quick tips to set you on the path of shaping righteousness.
    Got questions or comments? Hit those comments below and we'll do our best to answer everything!
    P.S. The most common question we get asked is: Where do you get your foam? Well, my peeps, here you go:
    Escape www.escapeclimbing.com uses a Trymers 4000 foam. Its primarily used for insulation and taxidermy work. We buy it in refrigerator sized blocks. Some of our other brands www.kingdomclimbing.com use the softer 4lb floral foam from Oasis Floral Products. We also buy this in refrigerator size blocks.
    Problem is, this stuff is really expensive and only comes in massive buns. So, to help ya'll out, we're going to parcel out some of our foam and sell it on our website at a more affordable price for those of you interested in trying your hand at shaping, but who, maybe aren't committed to spending thousands of dollars right off the bat.
    Additionally, we're going to put together Shaping Starter Kits which you'll be able to order off escapeclimbing.com. Included will be pretty much everything a beginner shaper needs to get started, including a hand saw, some clay tools, sandpaper pads, a rasp, and foam.
    We'll have this kit up and available by the end of the week! Stay tuned!

    Ryan this is by far the best tutorial on UA-cam for creating foam shapes! Well done!
    I'm starting my own garage wall and will create my own custom holds. Are you going to make videos on how to create molds and which material to use to cast the holds themselves. I realize that you don't want to give you secrets away but there is a lack of information on the internet as to what are the best materials for casting holds for us enthusiasts that just want a few selection of holds for our garage walls ;) Keep up the good work!

      Thanks for the positive feedback. We'll see what we can do about shedding some light on the casting process for you!

      I agree, that would be awesome! I'm getting most holds from professionals but it's really fun to create and try to customise your own holds, especially as an artist and a jewellery maker, I'd love to try making some holds for fun! Great video! Thank you!

      Maybe not a shortage, but definitely a lot of people interested in learning how!

    Thank you so much for this video! Where are the best places to buy the high density foam? Will the next video talk about drilling out the bolt hole and set screw holes?

    • @EscapeClimbing
      @EscapeClimbing  5 років тому +1

      Solid questions. In our next video we'll talk a bit more about foam. Foam is a tricky one though, and to get professional grade stuff you usually need to buy it in massive buns that run a couple thousand dollars. To help new shapers we're actually going to just start selling chunks of our own foam. Hit Ryan up at ryan@escapeclimbing.com for more info on that. As for drilling out bolt and screw holes, that's a fantastic question we hadn't thought of answering. We'll shoot a video detailing that process tomorrow and hopefully have it up next week. If you have other questions, just let us know and we'll do our best to answer them! Thanks for wtching, Aaron!

    Nice work! One question, which density for the pur foam would you suggest? 80kg/m³, 100kg/m³ or 120kg/m³?

      @@EscapeClimbing And "retail" refers to the cost of a single copy of each hold in the set? It seems very strange to me that there are no royalties (however small) in the hold shaping industry. This means that if I sculpt the best holds ever, and every gym in the world buys four copies, I'll get paid the same as a guy who just barely managed to get his holds accepted by the company. Right?
