  • Fished the Wilson River in Oregon the other day using a small black streamer. The fishing got better throughout the day and I landed 4 pretty descent sized cutthroat.

    I'm going out your way from NY this summer, as my sister-in-law bought a place on the Trask, a little south of the Wilson. It's very nice to see someone doing well on the fly since the videos I've seen here on the Trask & the Wilson show people fishing with bait and I assume keeping the steelhead. Most places where I live - or fish in VT & NY - tend to be,(but not always dictated by regulations), C&R fishing, so bravo to you for perpetuating the practice!

      The coast has great trout fishing but it is definitely overshadowed by steelhead and salmon. Costal cutties and the resident cutties are both so fun to fish for

    Sea Run Cutts in June? That is awesome! Good work!

    I love this scenery. I used to live in the Pac North West. I blew it and did not fish this beautiful river while I was there. I was too focused on the Deschutes and Columbia, or whatever the hot Steelhead/Salmon river was. I missed out on this. Thanks for the video.

    Awesome vid! Love the Wilson for Steelhead.. Would you mind going over your setup? Just standard floating fly line and some tippet and a streamer? I tried dry flys there a few weeks ago w/out much luck.

      Personally, I use a 3wt 7'6" with a floating line and ~7' 5X leader. I have tons of success just swinging a soft hackle on the coastal rivers. I wouldn't over think it. You can really use any method and have success. The cutthroat are not very shy once you find them and they'll eat anything from a big ole hopper to a tiny zebra midge. I tend to size things up quite a bit to try and avoid the equally ferocious juvenile salmon.

      @@chasecook3854 Were those last two big ones further down? Really nice fish. I usually only get those down below Mills Bridge..

    Awesome video. I'm just starting to explore the fishing up there and your video inspired me. I fished the Wilson last week just after the rain--middle river up into the Jones Creek area. Got into a few smaller sea runs on dries, but nothing on streamers...water seems a bit low still. Planning to hit it a few more times this month and see what I can find.

      Same man, the fishing has been slow for me there as well. It’s just been such a dry start to fall. I’m planning on getting out there soon for another go at the cutties. It’s just tough trying to keep all the salmon smolts off my line lol.

      same... been avoiding the coastal streams for the last two months. finally get to head out tomorrow for one shot at it before the trout season ends. glad we finally got some rain. i'll be running the nymphing rod and maybe try some drys or streamers.

      @@Respect.The.Grind.. thats good. pretty weak for me on the wilson... finally got in to a couple sea runs on nymphs. nothing on dries. hooked in to one steelhead with a streamer accidentally, it broke off in about 10 seconds. kinda wish i'd gone to the Trask instead.

      @@mattsavage well at least ya got some action. Never fished the trask or for steelhead. I’m newish to the area from PA. Looks like I’m gonna have to start soon since trout season is pretty much over. If you ever wanna fishin buddy lmk, i go out every weekend . Wouldn’t mind someone to share the river with and trade ideas/spots. My friends don’t fish and when they do come they bitch about how they gotta be home soon to do laundry or something lame like that.

      Right on yeah I used to fish it as a kid for salmon and steelhead, started fishing it for trout way back when I started fly fishing, beautiful area! There's a couple of awesome creeks at the Jones creek area off the Wilson, you can follow the creeks pretty far offroad to get off the hwy and to some more peaceful secluded areas, I always have good luck with trout on those creeks!

      @@thetroutsgill Perhaps I misunderstand the regulations, but aren't Wilson River tributaries generally closed to angling? (I'm happy to be proved wrong, however.)

    Just moved to the Tillamook area. I just bought my first fly rod! Any places you recommend for a beginner?

    • @thetroutsgill
      @thetroutsgill  2 роки тому +3

      That's awesome! There's actually a little area that I love to fish called Jones creek campground only about a half hour from the Tillamook area. Once you pull in it crosses over the Wilson River which is awesome fishing but if you follow the dirt roads back you can fish two creeks that feed into the Wilson, they're great creeks! I've caught some big fish out of there and have never been skunked in that area. Whenever I want some guaranteed catches that's exactly where I go, if you ever get out there let me know how it goes!!

      @thetroutsgill  2 роки тому +2

      Thank you!! And yeah definitely, check out a place called Jones Creek Campground. It has two awesome creeks that feed right into the Wilson, you can follow the creeks really far back into the woods and fish all day out there, pretty much guaranteed trout every time I go out there! And then right at the entrance you can fish the Wilson, I usually hit that up at the end of the day after the creeks. All in all it's a great area, let me know how the fishing goes if you ever make it out there!
