@@targetaudience It is the absolute best version available for effects, music, and sound, and has several added scenes and unnecessary line cuts compared to the theatrical version. By "unnecessary line cuts," I mean lines that were unnecessary, not unnecessary cuts, lol. For example, in the original, when the Enterprise escaped the wormhole, Chekov said, "We're out of it!" No duh, Pavel. No duh. In the rec room scene, Kirk yelled at Uhura "Viewer off!" as she was so stunned she'd stood in shock after his first command given in a normal tone and volume. That was cut to show she is a trained professional who is able to respond the first time.

I'm so glad that you guys are going to watch the 4K version of 'The Motion Picture.' Especially because they were finally able to finish the sound on that version, there's no doubt that it's the best.

I watched TAS when they first aired. Loved them then, and now. The music even runs in my head sometimes, it just has a unique drama quality to it. But yes, the TAS was NOT exactly a kids show, it was very intelligently written and for the most part over any kids head below the age of 10. It was a good in between filler from TOS and the movies. You guys are great by the way.

Please note that Chuck Huber, the actor cast as Dr. McCoy, was unavailable for episodes 1 and 2. I wasn't thrilled with their last-minute replacement, but they did the best they could in the circumstances. I think one of the major reasons that Star Trek Continues is popular is that Star Trek was so abruptly ended, and it had no series finale, which a show as epic as Star Trek certainly deserved. The 2-part finale is absolutely incredible, and I think, for Star Trek fans, gave them the finale and closure on the series that they were looking for. Hope you enjoy it! After I watched the finale for the first time, I was so moved I felt the urge to stand up and applaud!

    1. “Yesteryear”
    2. “The Slaver Weapon”
    3. “The Struggle”
    4. “The Pirates of Orion”
    5. “How Sharper Than a Serpent’s Tooth”
My least favorite episodes are “The Magicks of Megas-Tu,” “Bem” and “More Tribbles, More Troubles.”
No TAS episodes were nominated for the Best Dramatic Presentation Hugo. Today, with the award divided into Long Form and Short Form categories, “Yesteryear,” at least, would surely have been nominated.

GREAT INTRO! I appreciate your insights. TAS had some production issues.... odd framing, continuity errors, reusing stock shots, poor color choices. But TOS had production issues. The first two seasons of TNG were uneven. But TAS's issues are endearing. In the end TAS had good writers and told some good and sometimes great stories. It deserves its place in the Trek cannon.

The only episode of TOS that I saw any part of when the series first aired was a scene where a guy climbed a tree, bit into some fruit, and fell dead from the tree. I was about 8 at the time, and several years later when a high school friend got me into Trek stuff I learned that scene was from The Apple. Of TAS the only scene I recall seeing when it first aired was two guys in a water tank. Again, several years later I learned this was The Ambergris Element.

That VHS edition is what played on network TV and included a lot of unused footage. Some wasn't finished. Season 3-7 of DS9 ran alongside 1-5 of Voyager. Generations goes right after season 7 of TNG, so before DS9 season 3 & Voyager. First Contact is between DS9 seasons 4 & 5 and Voyager 2 & 3. Insurrection is between D9 seasons 6 & 7 or Voyager 4 & 5. Enterprise starts after Voyager. Nemesis is between Enterprise season 1 & 2. After Enterprise, it's the three Kelvin movies, Discovery Season 1, Short Treks Season 1, Discovery Season 2, Short Trek Season 2, Picard Season 1, Lower Decks Season 1, Discovery Season 3, Lower Decks Season 2, Prodigy season 1 & Discovery Season 4 ran alongside each other, Picard Season 2, Strange New Worlds Season 1, Lower Decks Season 3, Picard Season 3 & Strange New Worlds Season 2. The rest hasn't aired yet, but probably Lower Decks season 4, then Discovery Season 5 next.

Terrific video, guys! You've really made me re-evaluate the animated series.
Cool that you're watching ST:TMP special edition, but I highly recommend you do *NOT* watch the "director's cut" of Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. It's not at all what the director intended, just a cynical studio re-cut throwing back in scenes and bits that were cut for very good reasons. IMHO it really kills the pacing and lowers the quality of the film. Please watch the theatrical release.
Great Evil Dead reference at the end. Excellent choice!

      @anthonybernacchi2732 Рік тому +1

I think they may already have seen Wrath of Khan in whichever version -- there was a flashforward to their reaction when they were talking about watching the movies in person. The Director's Cut includes an extremely important plot point omitted from the theatrical version, but aside from that the film is a timeless classic in either version (unlike TMP, which I genuinely think is a weak film in its theatrical version).

Great lists! I watched the first season of Star Trek when it first aired and loved it, but my dad was in the service and we were shipped overseas during the second and third seasons, so I missed them and had to watch them in reruns when we returned to the states. However, I did watch the animated series when it first aired and loved it. Star Trek was resurrected mainly because of the animated series, and TOS being in reruns. New fans grew and grew and their call for movies became undeniable.
The Motion Picture is a very good film, but it doesn't feel like the series or the rest of the films in the series. They hired a famous, award-winning director, who made an epic film, but one that is pretty weird and boring AF in certain parts, so be prepared. I do think you'll like it, but the ST film franchise doesn't really get rolling until the second film, which is a certified classic. I'm looking forward to watching your journey, guys. ❤✌

Since noone talking about it i wanna mention "New Voyages, Phase II". The production value may not be just as amazing as with Continues, but still way above all the other Fan made stuff, and theres a lot of great stuff there. You guys gave me a new appreciation for the animated series and I really appreciate that. I’ve seen people suggest that you should watch the directors cut of the movie. I don’t think this is a good idea, because so far, you have watched it as it was released. It was not released like that and that is not what we saw in the theater.
Anyway, I’m looking so forward to you watching the movies. And I also love that you’re watching Quantum Leap. I really enjoyed that show as well.

I think a lot of Trekkies or Trekkers haven't seen the Animated series is because Gene Roddenbury didn't like it, so I don't think it got a lot of TV air time after it first aired unlike the live action TOS series which has never been off the air since it first came out in the 1960's. So the animated series is somewhat rare, almost only existing on the DVD's currently. - I don't even think it really came out on VHS going back in the years.

My Aunt blew my mind when she told me about the REAL Star Trek and I have been a fan since I could walk. Glad to see a younger generation appreciating it. Yesteryear was the first episode I ever saw. I don’t know if this will be on time. When you watch Star Trek, The Motion Picture, be sure to watch one of the later editions. The original theatrical cut removed some key scenes. So the movie makes less sense. With the missing scenes restored, the story makes more sense.

These reactions have definitely given me a greater appreciation for TAS. For me, it was the 70s Filmation animation that put me off. If these same stories were audiodramas instead, I likely would have absorbed them.
Regarding different actors in the TOS roles: Star Trek has luckily been pretty good in this regard.
Whether it's Leonard Nimoy, Zachary Quinto, Ethan Peck, or Continues' Todd Haberkorn - they all wear the ears well. The originals' gravitas will probably never be matched, but after ten minutes you're not watching a Spock cosplayer. You're just watching Spock.

However, that was not the reason you gave for not watching it. The reason you gave was that it was different actors playing the familiar characters. That has me concerned as the newer official Star Trek movies and Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds have different actors playing these legacy characters. Does this mean you will not watch these newer official Star Trek shows because they have different actors playing those legacy characters?

You should seriously consider doing "Star Trek Continues" next.
It very nicely concludes the 5-year mission and ends right where Star Trek: The Motion Picture begins.
For a fan-made series, the sets, costumes, music, special effects, lighting and production are all equal to the Original Series.
It features some well-known guest stars and many Trek fans even consider it canon.
Here's a trailer (no spoilers) to give you an idea of just how good it really is:

I wouldn't call any thing "Star Trek" unless it was made by a studio . It can have other actors. It will when you hit the JJ reboots and the Streaming shows but there are some exceptions to that thought. If you want to see fan content , go for it but only studio stuff is canon.
in regards to Star Wars either dig up the original versions of the films or watch them knowing that this is NOT "Impressive graphics for 1977" Those graphics you are enjoying were added in the 90s and if nothing else you should see "From Star Wars to Jedi the making of a Saga" which shows you original clips , and the Oprah Winfrey Star Wars interview which shows you how the world reacted to the Special edition hype.
