    Back in 2017 I believe, my mac was so slow that I was going to just throw it out and unfortunately/fortunately buy a newer expensive model. I came across this vid, bought and installed the two 8gig RAM but only 1 500gb hard drive. But either way it made a HUGEEEE difference. I spent a little over $300 on the RAM and Hard drive and basically save over $1k. Now its 2021 and I still use my 2012 mac! Still fast and reliable as ever! Just wanted to come back and say thanks for the video! Saved me a ton of hassle at the time!

    When you boot up after installing the two new SSD's, do not install your OS X install thumb drive if it is OS X 10.11 or later. Apple eliminated the RAID option from Disk Utility in those versions. You need to boot up, holding down "Command + R" with no thumb drive installed and the Macbook will perform an internet recovery which will have an older version of Disk Utility with RAID. After you have created your RAID, power down and boot up with your thumb drive inserted and you will start the OS X install process. Took me a whole week to figure this out by accident. Also, if your OS X thumb drive installer does not work, you have the option of installing the original OS your Macbook came with and then you can upgrade to whatever OS X you want from the App store.

    Just a quick addition, because of changing the hdd, and removing the battery connector the computer will reset the date, that may cause verification issues while installing os x, if the error pops out
    This copy of the install OS X application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading
    just click on Utilities -> Terminal, type date
    if the date is incorrect, use this command
    date {month}{day}{hour}{minute}{year}
    example date 102713122016 and hit return
    After that try to install again, and that's it.

      Don't know if you already did it but its for combined size and speed. If you are just doing one drive you don't need to mess with raid 0 or anything like that... the performance increase you will notice will be incredible and almost like buying a newer model. Good LUck

    Another important upgrade is wrapping the hard drive cable with electrical tape! The stock cable is so thin that microscopic damage totally ruin it and make it look like your HDD/SDD corrupted. Alternatively, just put electrical tape between the cable and where it contacts the inner part of the casing and you'll be good too.

    Got a mid-2012 MacBook Pro. Before I saw your vid, I upped the RAM to 8GB and I just put in an SSD. Was advised, once the drive was installed, [Cmd]-r boot, Disk Utility, format drive to MacOS Ext (Journaled), reboot [Cmd][Opt]-r which automatically sought my network (used ethernet for speed, rather than my wi-fi), it read my PRAM to verify previously installed MacOS, and automatically downloaded my new Mojave. No bootable flash drive required. In-line with OS installation it asked if I wanted to transfer my data, apps, and settings from a TimeMachine backup, which I did. No muss, no fuss. I'm only lacking the 2nd SSD. Your vid was clear, concise, professional. Thank you. I felt that sharing the OS install might benefit you and your followers.

    Lol. Still watching this in 2020. My Mid-2012 Macbook Pro is still running like a charm on OSX Catalina with an upgraded 240 GB SDD although I just use 8 GB RAM. In this video, OSX was re-installed using a USB. The mid-2012 Macbook Pro is actually equipped with a wi-fi card (as mentioned here with Bluetooth). You can re-install the original OSX that came with your machine (OSX Mountain Lion) by pressing Command-R as soon as you power up. It will ask you to connect to a network and then proceed with network install of the original OSX on your new SSDs. You can then upgrade Mountain Lion to El Capitan and up. I went from Mountain Lion to El Capitan and then to High Sierra. I skipped Mojave and right now, I'm running Catalina. Yes, the mid-2012 MBP will run Catalina fine. Enjoy. No need for USB install and no need to purchase older OSX versions.

    I lucked into buying this thing in 2012. I've had it for 8 years now and spend on average 8 hours a day on it. Spent $180 got the SSHD and upgraded it to 16G RAM. Making this thing run better than anything I've ever been on. Last year the power input and magsafe plug destroyed one another, and the battery swelled up enough to make me think there was something wrong with the track pad. With $125 I replaced the battery, bought a new magsafe port, and got a different power cable. Then self installed.
    Other than that I've had zero problems with this thing. With all the videos on youtube I'm pretty confident that I could fix and replace anything, not board related.

Even the 2Gb 850 Evo Zen used can pull over 900 Mb a sec on Blackmagic solo and the 860 Evo should be even faster so the go is to put a 9.5 mm thin 2Gb HD for $100 into the DvD bay and a single big 860 Evo in the HD bay. 4Tb onboard storage for cheap!

I needed something with more portability and better battery life... and the hi-res screen is decent, but it is nothing compared to a retina screen. I will never forget my 2012, though. It was a BEAST.

    Your processor test was lower on the one w raid because macbook pro uses "soft" raid as opposed to the old mac pros which had optional hardware dedicated to the raid process. you're speeding up your read/write speeds at the cost of some processing power. Granted, its not much processing for a heck of a lot of R/R spd, but thats whats happening. If you do game or music production which regularly max your cpu, its the industry standard to have two non raid disks, one w system & apps, the other for media storage. That way you free your processor from the raid task and free your media disk from system tasks.

      Hi Stu. I do a bit of music production myself and as you said ableton and plugins are maxing out my cpu regularly! Do you reckon i'd be better to just replace my cd drive with a SSD (and use this for OS and applications) and use my original drive for storage large files/plugins etc? Thanks

      +Stu Dubya sorry but you are an idiot... the overhead is imperceptible the lower score is because its an older generation i& chip. Hi Ghz but older design. The only reason one drive is used for AV is because most people haven't bothered going to a raid plus a single drive is twice as safe.

      +Corey Gallagher A RAID is TWICE as likely to have an error or have a disk crash.

      The point he's making is that RAM and HD can be upgraded on the older MacBook Pros but the video cards are a limiting factor because they cannot be replaced so you should look for the fastest video card you can find for the money.if buying a pre-retina MacBook Pro. His advice is sound.

    Nice. Keeping those screws in order will prevent a possible mess. Even those short ones differ. Some are threaded normally and some partially threaded. I dislike messy screw threading. Good catch. I found my mid 2012 in a dumpster wrapped in plastic with the words DEAD written on it. Less than a hundred bucks and a few hours of relaxing repair time, I have a fast little, nearly new looking Macbook Pro. Even the battery has life left. Don't let anyone tell you a mid 2012 is outdated and can not be made to run quite well.

    What is trim? I tried upgrading my drive but I keep getting an error, after I install the drive it’s like it doesn’t even recognize it and when I try to format it won’t give me an option for journal formatting it gives me the new format, any ideas how to correct?

    • @emotionalintelligence776
      @emotionalintelligence776 5 років тому +5

      TRIM can improve the performance of writing data to SSDs and contribute to longer SSD life, if supported you’d use a Terminal command in MacOS but all SSD are not supported. Now as for your other problem if you know nothing about Raid setups even more importantly the Pros (Speed) and the Ultimate Con (Total Data Loss) this is NOT the video for you, any who use carbon copy cloner or similar to clone your drives. Put the old hard drive back in your Mac, put the SSD in an external USB enclosure, start the app and follow the directions as required to clone EVERYTHING, Lol, just keep it simple. Once the clone process starts go do something not involving the computer and make sure it’s the only thing running, not required but hey you never know. When everything is done, Restart, hold the Alt button, select your SSD, let it boot, make sure everything works, turn the Mac off, now install your SSD in your Mac and you’re all done.

    I have the same 17 inch macbook pro and I LOVED IT! Still do! This is by far the best machine i've ever owned. Yeah - it's a bit slower than today's machines but 99% of the people won't have an issue with that. I am a developer primarily and the only complain i have is the lack of 6+ cores - but i can live with that. The only and biggest pitfall of this laptop is the GPU. Actually not just the macbook pro but also the iMacs from 2009-2012 have the same issue - the AMD chip inside overheats and gets totally messed up. I've baked it several times until it stopped working compeltely. If it wasn't for this i would still be using it till that day!
