    Must remember that trick with the nut - very clever.
    I too like a blue locomotive.

    I have Great Western 4-4-0 County of Cornwall which had the same problem.I used the exact same method. One thing I had to look out for was checking the number of teeth when ordering the pinion gear. I have a limited edition Pretty Polly in green. Pretty Polly was a record breaking race horse. Enjoyed watching. Cheers Paul.

    I have a loco drive blue Flying Scotsman from the red drawer train set, Hornby also did a similar Master Cutler set with a blue Prince Palatine. There is also r3627 another blue Scotsman from about 5 years ago. As far as I know these are the only 3 blue loco drive A3s

    A nice simple job for a change! I continue to be amused by the man and his dawg moving around in front of the shed😂

    If you do come over this Sunday model railway exhibition in Dundee please be careful for yellow warning for storm cover in Scotland. Hopefully you'll be fine and safe driving there to avoid delays

    Hi Bill, I have a blue ‘City of Birmingham’ with the identical tender drive. Having serviced the ring field motor, cleaned the commutator, replaced the brushes and springs and cleaned ALL the wheels on both the Loco and tender it was time to test. The Loco chassis runs very freely but I was surprised to see a bit of. ‘Stoppy Starty presenting itself on the test run. Any pointers or tips on the drawbar connection (where I suspect the fault) would be appreciated. Happy Modelling. Tony (aka T🚂)

    nothing wrong with tender drives, tbh better performers and better haulage, the alloy gear was the result of hornby being tight during the mid 90s, I had them on my ringfields soon as I bought them recently, first thing i did was changing it to brass.

    That looks identical to the Prince Palatine, a locomotive I had back in the day, same colour and same shape, just a different name.

    I had the same problem on my tender driven Schools class managed to stick the original gear back with a drop of Loctite

      Loctite 638 High Strength Retainer and you wouldn’t get the pinion back off again. Amazing stuff.

    Hello, as always, a well documented repair. One question, other than the fine oil you use for most lubrication, you have referred to gear oil on occasion. Is this the same or something different? Thank you.

    • @oobill
      @oobill  2 місяці тому +1

      Hob-E-Lube Gear Oil. It's basically a thicker and stickier oil.

    I've got one of the A3 R3627 Flying Scotsman's in BR experimantal blue and they're loco drive and DCC Ready.
    They don't come up on Ebay that often though. Got mine for a bargain £70 as it was boxless and missing the buffer beam on the tender.
    I intended to find a replacement tender chassis, but then spotted the correct tender (with the right connection socket) being sold at a very reasonable price, so grabbed it. That worked out nicely as I then auctioned the damaged one for spares and was surprised to get a whole £1 more than I'd bought the undamaged one for!😀
    Alternatively there's R2201 'Robert the Devil' which I believe is also loco drive but not DCC Ready.
    There's also Tornado in the same livery or R2036 St. Frusquin' in BR experimental purple rather than blue.

    It looks okay and pulls a decent enough rake, but there is something wrong with tender drive. Just knowing that the loco itself is doing zero is weird.

    • @MarkInLA
      @MarkInLA 2 місяці тому

      Yeah !! No tractive effort under the loco, a heavy load at that for one lone 'truck' to push along with a string of cars, has always been dumb to me..
      In the US we've had very very little of that in the past, have zero made today, AND our steam locos at 1:87 are even smaller (in motor space) than yours at 1:75 ! I've no idea whether or not they still manufacture them this way in Britain. But I'd hope not..
