    Slight correction to your 'back of the van' calculation. You don't divide by 3412 - that's the conversion constant from kWh to BTU (1 kWh = 3412 Btu) which shouldn't be in there. What you should do is divide by 3600 since the result of your first three terms (the volume, the specific heat of water and and temperature delta) are energy expressed in kiloJoules (the specific heat of water being 4.2 kJ/kg degree C). Dividing this product by 3600 (number of seconds in an hour) you get kWh since on kJ is equal to 1kWs.
    Now, with a small volume the error between dividing by 3412 and 3600 (and using 4 instead of 4.2 for the specific heat of water) is not very big, so 8kWh is correct - but once you apply this to larger volumes it will make a big difference, especially when your specific heat changes due to e.g. use of glycol in the system.

      Thanks for pointing this out.. I knew that calculation didn't seem quite right but hadn't dug into it to figure out why.. IMHO, this is why it's always a good idea to actually understand and include the units you're using in your calculations, as it's a good sanity-check that you've actually calculated things the right way:
      (125 liters) × (1.0 kg/liter) × (55 °C) × (4.182 kJ/kg⋅°C) × (1.0 kWs/kJ) ÷ (3600 s/h) = 8.0 kWh
      _(remove the numbers and just look at the units:)_
      liter × kg/liter × °C × kJ/kg⋅°C × kWs/kJ ÷ s/h =
      liter⋅kg⋅°C⋅kJ⋅kW⋅s⋅h / liter⋅kg⋅°C⋅kJ⋅s =
      -liter⋅kg⋅°C⋅kJ- ⋅ kW ⋅ -s- ⋅ h / -liter⋅kg⋅°C⋅kJ⋅s- =
      kW ⋅ h = *kWh*
      _(yup, checks out)_

    18:44 - network switch - If you end up doing more of these, check out something like the Ubiquiti USW-Flex-Mini, it can be powered by POE from the switch uplink connection, and then provides 4 ports of gigabit ethernet, means you don't need to mess about having to install a socket just for the switch and the mess that is a powerbrick and cable - obviously assuming the switch it's connected to is a POE capable switch

    Good video, clean install! I’d skip the Eddi if the customer has heat pump heated hot water. An immersion is at best ~100% efficient, where as using the same electricity in a heat pump will be anywhere from 2-4X time that. The customer would be better off boosting hot water via the heat pump.
    Not sure if this can be automated though!

    • @davideyres955
      @davideyres955 Рік тому

      You would need a heat pump with more output just to heat the water up to the required temp though. If you are only running your heat pump to do the heating then you would only need it to go to around 26deg if you have under floor where as if you are heating the water via heat pump it needs to be able to get to 55deg to kill legionella. There are systems that will run a emersion heater periodically but not sure if that’s a domestic system or not as not a heating engineer. Also even if a heat pump is 4x you wont get as much efficiency as direct sun heating which is more efficient than heat pumps by a long way. It’s all getting in to the realms of building management systems which is great if they work all the time but if not who’s going to maintain and support it at what cost. There does come a point where it’s too complex for joe public. Personally the less I have to give the energy companies the better but it’s going to be a trade off and what works for some may not work in all cases.

      I was thinking the same, but isn't the benefit be that the Eddi is 'smart' in using the CT clips to work out what is excess being sent back to the grid and adjust the power consumption of the eddi/immersion to match the excess.
      A) How would the heat pump know there is excess and turn itself on,
      B) I assume that the heat pump wouldn't be able to throttle the power use to match the excess (ie its not an inductive load, its either on or off and the amount of power consumption is determined by the HP controller not to match the excess solar power).
      I know you could charge the battery and then set the HP to work for a short period and then let the battery recharge... but seems rather convoluted and difficult to control automatically and assume you wouldn't do that as it would add extra cycles to the battery.
      I also assume that there is inefficiencies in the HP starting and stopping, for example if there was patchy clouds.
      Totally happy to be corrected on this but the eddi seems a sensible/manageable/controllable way of ensure any excess (if you have any after the battery/zappi) is not sent to the grid and is self consumed. If the savings in hot water justify the £315ex vat for the Eddi is another question.
      Or am I missing the point - is the assumption that you just export the excess during the day while the sun is shining and buy it back at the cheaper rate during the night to run the HP and fully charge the water tank. This isn't really 'using the excess pv' but might be more practical way of doing it.
      Totally happy to be told were I am being dim and only asking as I was thinking of getting the eddi with my PV system to cash in on the 0% VAT as part of the overall system...

      @@davideyres955 what? I don't know any domestic heat pumps that are out currently that cannot get water to 55° on their own, Vaillant etc will go to 75° easily, 400% easily beating any Eddi and avoids the cost of any solar water panels.

    Great video and great to have Corey back, one question though, I know you talked about using an Eddi but if it's a ground source heat pump surely it's more efficient to use the excess solar to drive that at an efficiency of 3+ times compared to using a direct immersion heater?

    • @johndododoe1411
      @johndododoe1411 Рік тому

      In typical European rules from before Brexit, there's no rule about AC vs. DC, but all wires in a trunk must be isolated for the highest voltage present . So if a 50V DC PoE computer or phone equipment supply shares a way with a 230V AC mains cable, all wires in that way must be proper 500V wires . I guess if you pay someone will sell you 500V certified Cat7 cable for that control system .

I'm looking at installing 23kWh of battery storage with X2 3.7kWh hybrid inverters. The reason for not going with the Libbi is cost and the fact that you can't setup a master Battery Management System to load balance across multiple units. GivEnergy - just read the support issues on their forum! 🤦‍♂️

      A bit late to the party, but that was an immediate concern.
      Two levels of risk. Simply the explosive/run-away nature of lithium battery fires, whatever the cause is a worry, but also, these are installed directly in front of where vehicles are parked (that said - I bet cars are rarely parked in that garage). Although highly unlikely to happen, but, there is nothing to stop a car accidentally running into this wall of batteries and potentially crushing them. It is a big installation with a large amount of stored energy.
      These are or seem to be installed away from primary escape routes (looks a massive property) so are considered safe I guess, but, are still within the living/inhabited space. With no extract system then any dangerous fumes may also quickly get into the living space. Didn't see any fire detection system installed in the garage area either.
      Do these installations have to be declared/signed externally in case of fire?
      Is there or should there be an externally accessible kill/isolation switch? Not saying the installation is not safely installed, but, there are other considerations beyond the equipment itself if it were mine.

    That’s not how it should be terminated. You should fit a 3 pole isolator at the boiler. You could of saved all that hassle by installing a contactor to the boiler and la Elle’s it as two supplies the switched live could operate the contactor. Get a small contactor for a few pounds
