What is IL-2 Great Battles?
The new generation of IL-2 Sturmovik titles is developed by 1CGS and is a combat flight simulator of the World War II era and carries on the tradition created by the original IL-2 Sturmovik first released in 2001. Sturmovik recreates the aircraft, their use in the war and the environment they flew in. This latest product is a successor of the classic IL-2 Sturmovik that was a leader of the sim genre for more than 10 years. The new IL-2 is true to the ideas born by the first title with an accurate representation of aircraft and famous WWII battles.

Squadron Commander: Okay boys we're facing the enemy in the LaGG-3. It's a mediocre aircraft, outclassed in every category that matters. So much so that the initials stand for Lakirovanny Garantirovanny Grob Tip 3 (varnished guaranteed coffin type 3).
(Deputy squadron commander Yuri Antonov proceeds to shoot down four Fascists on his first sortie in type including a heavily armoured close support aircraft with only a single 12.7mm machine gun)
Squadron Commander: Dammit Yuri, stop doing that! They'll keep making the damn thing and we'll have to keep flying it!
Yuri: I can't help it if the enemy is full of bad pilots
The only good thing you can say about the LaGG-3 is that it’s about 40 mph faster than the I-16. That’s it.
Absolutely brilliant man
One of the many issues with the LaGG 3 was the glue used to laminate the timber the AC is made from was a bit sub par initially. The LaGG had a habit of just coming apart under G load.
@@timonsolus At ground level - yes. At higher altitude this LaGG model is 110kp/h faster than I-16.
Also LaGG-3 and its successors unlike other wooden planes didn't burn. Even when hit by incendeary rounds.
Finally the return of Yuri. Wolf, I've noticed that BOS might be the toughest theater of ops for the vvs in Great Battles. The amount of 109's everywhere is overwhelming, even by the end of the campaign when the germans are in full retreat. Be careful, you'll be outnumbered, most of the time.

He's here. He's finally arrived. Senior Lieutenant Yuri Yurievich Antonov, the Moscow Ace, the Red Arrow, the Pride of Podolsk. I had heard from the pilots in the 9th GIAP that Moscow was sending a decorated pilot down here to Stalingrad to help us beat back the German invaders, but for some reason I never really believed them. Maybe because we had suffered terrible losses in the first few days and the pilots wanted to believe that such a decorated war hero would make his way down here to help us push back the invaders. But the Comrade Lieutenant is here in Stalingrad now, and morale in the squadron has never been higher.
Speaking of the Comrade Lieutenant, he had barely touched down with his LaGG-3 when he immediately went back up and shot down four more German planes. Two fighters, two bombers, according to my spotters. One more German and he would already have fifty stars on his plane alongside that distinctive howling wolf roundel of his. Heck, he might even have to add another Hero of the Soviet Union award to his chest if that happens! Comrade Antonov might even soon beat Marshal Zhukov for the number of awards they have got at the rate the Lieutenant is going.
Now I must remember to send another letter to my wife Oksana and our children. Every day that the Germans get closer to Stalingrad is another day that her reassignment to the hospital in Krasnoyarsk is becoming more and more of a blessing in disguise. It's also another day that little Marfa and Isay Isayevich can grow up in relative peace, without the spectre of enemy bombs and guns hanging over their heads. I can only hope that I will be able to return to them the same way that I left them: alive.

Thank God our comrade Yuri is in the skies again! Papa says the evil fascists are about to meet their match. We had been hiding underground in the sewers coming out only when the all clear sounds. Our house went up in flames and the fire bombing of last night and thankfully our whole family was able to make it to safety. I know you can do it Comrade Yuri and I even have a picture of you from Pravda that I carry with me as a token.

An episode I was eagerly expecting! Fingers crossed Yuri does indeed pull through this hellish battle alive. If he does, we can expect his tally to grow to even more outlandish levels than it is already after Moscow.
Stoked for this. Just got a HOTAS, pedals and pile of Il-2 great battles downloads, partially inspired by watching all Wolf’s careers. Just gotta define all the millions of controls now :D

Wow, so immersive! Seeing Stalingrad burning in the distance gave me goosebumps! Its the closest we have to stepping into a time machine. Very educational as well. What a great way to learn about WW2!

I was looking forward for your LaGG-3 series as well as the continuation of Yuri's career, so this is very welcome! I don't fly the LaGG-3 generally, exactly for the reasons you mention, so I can very much appreciate your taking this as an nice challenge to make it work nonetheless. Godspeed, Yuri wasn't deterred flying in a I-16 either so he has all his chances to get through it!
Just started with Il2. Glad i found this channel because it led me to use Career Mode to train. When I can't be up in the virtual sky I love to watch these. So far have binged Justin Hall and Yuri's Moscow campaign. Love your intros and use of cinematics. Subscribed.

The LaGG may be underwhelming but after flying the I-16 Yuri does not care and almost bags himself an ace worth of kill on the first sortie.

Wolfpack is one of the best story creators for IL2. You might want to check out Sherriff's Sim Shack for technical advice on take off, landing and attack profiles on almost every aircraft in the game, mate. Happy hunting!

@@Joze1090 Try using the speed and altitude bars if you have to. While en route to an area monitor your speed and altitude and look at the altimeter and speedometer to see what certain speeds and altitudes look like on the instruments. You can press H to disable the HUD.
@@Joze1090 I recommend sticking to a single aircraft at first. I started on the P-40, but it probably wasn't the best choice in hindsight, but it did teach me complex engine management. If I had to do it all over again and ease in, I really like the Yak-1 Series 69 as a starting point because the engine is quite forgiving if you abuse it. The IL-2 itself is much the same way, but a real different beast in terms of its role. Stick with it, it's a great sim!
@@Joze1090 Nice, it's a fun aircraft to fly. Head movement with a joystick, that's tough. I use TrackIR, just because I get motion sickness from VR. There are some lower cost alternatives to TrackIR that are supposed to work very well, but I've never tried them. Hopefully another commenter can chime in with some other recommendations!

The AI pilots the Me-109 as a beginner in fly school. The reality for most LaG3 pilots was quite different.
Seeing this really reminds me I need to dig out my joystick and throttle set so I can slap on my vr set and really immerse myself in dogfights.

I really enjoy watching good pilots play the "underdog" airplanes in flight sims, and I thoroughly enjoy the Yuri campaign so much for that reason.

These series (Axis or Allies) were always my favorite campaigns so I'm glad to see Yuri has made it to the Stalingrad Front and am eager to see if he'll survive this as eloquently as the Moscow one.
My hats off to you! To be able to fly so many different aircraft is amazing. I'm just trying to fly the Yak and not get shot down and successfully land it.

You’re so good at this game! When I first loaded up the game I plugged in my Logitech Extreme 3D pro (which isn’t the best for IL-2) the sensitivity was so bad even at 100% so I legit couldn’t even line up my sights onto an enemy aircraft.
