The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon - Graphics Comparison (Wii vs PS2 vs PS3)

- I thought it would be interesting to compare the visuals of this game since it was released across platforms with different hardware specs.
I chose the Valley of Avalar since I think it's the most dynamic area of the game.
I don't own an Xbox 360 so I can't compare it but I'm sure it's similar to the PS3 version.

Man i wished the Legend of spyro trilogy was into ps4/xbox one...
Same
Zidane Mina yeah
I wish it had a PC port, Actually scratch that, i would PAY for them to make a PC port, just tell me where to sign and im in
But what would that add?
Why though?
We got Spyro Reignited trilogy for PC,Xbox and PS 4 + Switch.
Hope TLoS will get a remake one day.
Tayzor Azul It won't. The developers answer to popular demand, and LoS doesn't have as many people wishing it back as the OT had. Also... let's face it: Even though LoS came pretty close, the OT remains the pinnacle of the franchise.
Putz Grila Never say never.
@Tommy Howell Spyro is one of the best original franchises. If you don't like it, then gtfo. 😏
@@sakuraitonen5886 and Barerwolf it’s the same one who said this game (The Legend of Spyro Dawn of the Dragon) on WishingTikal’s video part 2 of it was bad when really it’s still very good
@Barerwolf well Tommy was probably here to trashed it (The Legend of Spyro) as of saying what exactly what Tommy said or just to stir up anger in others or both if I had to take a guess of why Tommy was here for
No surprise the Wii version is basically the PS2 version, but there are a few subtle enhancements to the graphics, including smoother and more detailed textures and some smoke effects here and there. It's not a massive upgrade but looks very good for the hardware. The PS3 version shows much more detail in the river streams and along the grassy valleys. It's great to see all the plants and flowers on the ground, as well as seeing leaves on the trees and light shining through the branches. The contrast is jacked way too high, which was a common problem for that era. Great video, thanks for sharing!
im pretty sure the wii has a significant resolution improvement. i believe most ps2 games ran at 360p (or maybe im thinking of 480i) and as far as i know all wii games ran at 480p, the same goes for widescreen, with the ps2 rarely giving it support. also am i the only one who finds the bloom and colours of the ps2 game exclusively to be a pain to look at?
@@Athesies Most PS2 games are in 480i, less than 200 PS2 games were in 480p.
im actually impressed by the ps2 version. considering how weak the ps2 is. the game was designed for 256 mb of ram and they somehow managed to get it to work on 32mb
Where did they say that?
@pafoneto127ThevPS3 has 256MB of RAM.5
Wow. The PS3 version looks so pretty! 😍 😭
I bought TLoS: DotD today to ps3 I just wanted to see this beauty in my own eyes.
Dawn of the Dragon is very hard to find for ps3... when you do happen to find it, it's very expensive!
i have it ;)
Here in Mexico is not very hard to find, i got it for like a couple of
USA dollars, and so did 3 of my friends. Maybe it's because game
collecting is not a very common thing down here and rare games just go
arround dirt cheap. The only game i can't find is Afrika, and that's
because it was never shipped to my country (Or so i've heard by the
distribution company) :C
I found this game 1st time searching and IT was very cheap (i know old comment)
All for Sloth No
Got my copy off of eBay a week ago
i played the PS2 version and of course i understand why it still has bad graphic than the other versions. But at least the gamplay was excellent and enjoyable
Okay, I never played this one but was interested in the graphics comparison, but that soundtrack... holy crap it's great lol
The soundtrack of this game is legendary it’s like something you would hear in a very great movie
There is so much potential with this soundtrack it’s just too good for a game
Wow I forgot about these 2 comments that I put I don’t even remember them being at least a month old only
But this game I think is one of the better looking ps2 titles, its amazing that they got it to look this close to the ps2 version
I have no clue why they let the other studio do the game, 2007 graphics were on point.
If I remember correctly, Krome Studios's budget for developing the third game ran out so Sierra had to go elsewhere to get it finished.
I wonder if that's the reason the third game doesn't even have classic controller support on Wii. Eternal Night has that.
I believe Etranges Libellules was hired by Sierra to develop the third legend of spyro game if I was right
Really? I like the 3rd game's graphics way more. Higher resolutions, better 3d models, lighting is on point, views are nicer, etc. Idk what the original studio that did the first 2 games would have done but dotd looks really good, especially on the ps3.
@@beardeddragon9255 It makes it feel more epic compared to the first two games, and being that it's also the third in a trilogy.
Playstation 2 vs Wii: hmm ok not much different
Playstation 2 vs Playstation 3: WHAt tHe HELL ITS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY!
I wish I had a Playstation 3 now. I skipped it and had this game on my Playstation 2...
It actually annoys me how similar the PS2 and Wii versions look. I wasn't expecting PS3 graphics out of the Wii, but the Wii IS more powerful than the PS2 having come out 6 years later.
@@christopherdittmar1253 The ps2 version is actually sharper, looking at the rock textures it's fairly obvious that the ps2 version is a little better. However, then comparing to the ps3 where they actually look like rocks and not flatish objects with scribbles on, it's a lot nicer. Looking back to ps3 graphics after having a ps4 for a while is also eye opening, you really notice how much better things look in scenery when comparing to a game like Horizon and even then PC is able to produce insanely real looking textures.
I remember when I spent 13 Dollars for the PS3 version... I wish I did not give up that game.....
Wii version has this dream like effect it's awesome, PS3 is just wow.
I was able to get the PS3 version from Ebay. So now I'll be able to play this game in a whole new way
I never even knew about the wii and ps3 versions. I’ve had the ps2 version since it came out and I’ve played through it multiple times. Our ps2 is worn out now though and it doesn’t want to run the game
I really want them to update this trilogy and Crash Twinsanity. Actually there's a cool change.org for a Crash Twinsanity, perhaps do the same with these games
It's obvious that Xbox 360 and Ps3 have much more superior graphics. There's practically no lighting in the ps2 version :/
well that would be too much for the ps2
Mohamed Alnás Yah, I know. Still one of the best games ever tho
Dave Krawn true, I was playing it yesterday and I love it
It still did pretty good i think. Some of its texture are better than those of the wii.
This is exactly the problem of dawn of the dragon...imagine if they released this game for only ps3/Xbox360, it would be a whole different game..but just like the last two crash games, Activision likes too released their games to all consoles no matter what
I'm rather surprised by the difference in graphics and performance between the PS2 and the Wii. The Wii is much smoother, and the image is sharper and clearer. The PS3 version is just in a world of its own. The difference between the PS2 and PS3 is rather shocking, actually. Yes, I understand that the hardware is very different in both of them and that the PS3 is newer, but how much more they were actually able to add to the scene on the PS3 vs the PS2 is incredible. All the grass, additional dragonfly things (forgive me if I'm butchering that, don't know too much about Spyro), the flowers, everything. I was considering buying this on PS2, but after seeing this I am definitely going to hunt for the PS3 version, I think.
This is the best level by far and probably the best looking. Love it
I am get the version for ps2 and wii for this game
Kinda wish the game would get on Xbone's backwards compatibility already. These games weren't amazing, but they're a part of Spyro history that needs to be remembered, especially now that it's looking like the franchise is getting a second wind. At least it seems to run rather well through RPCS3.
unfortunately its unlikely, the developers behind this game pretty much went bankrupt and closed, so all the source code is probably lost unless activision has the files, so getting it to work in back compat is impossible for now
Some of THQ’s games are on Xbone’s backwards compatibility.
3 year old comment, I know. But as of now, Xbox has stopped the backwards compatibility program. But, we know they are underway with acquiring Activision, so you never know what they may do next
*DOTD is BY FAR the BEST Spyro game ever cteated even without the greatest combat system. None can ever change my mind.*
Why do you think it’s the best?
Wii and PS2 are almost identical, but because the PS2's ram is so small, and smaller than the Wii's, the textures seem to not feature mipmaps, which would have taken more space in RAM, and this causes the crispier looks, as the textures remain in their high resolution at a distance, instead of being replaced by a lowres mipmap. And while the Wii is barely any better than a PS2 graphics wise ( just an overclocked Gamecube mostly ), that's still enough to allow a better framerate. Other late PS2 games by the same developpers had trouble keeping past 30FPS ( or 25 in PAL ) due to the amount of stuff happening on screen.
There isn't really any one version of the game that looks bad, it seems like they intentionally messed with the art direction for each port to play to a given console's power, and as a result they avoided the usual pitfall of a certain art direction looking awful on a different spec. The ps2 version is a lot more colorful, the wii version is a lot more dreamlike, the ps3 version is a lot more effect heavy. This allowed them to port over what is relatively the same game instead of having to make a different version for lower end hardware, and without having the version on higher end hardware look the same as a the one on lower end hardware.
What's the frame rate like for the wii and xbox 360 versions of the game as well as the stability of it? Just wondering :)
Both the Wii and 360 version have an unlocked framerate but isn't smooth at all on Wii. I don't own the 360 version but from what I have played of it, the framerate was a bit smoother than the PS3 version.
Hot damn this game looks good on PS3. Is there an emulator for that shit yet? I need that, even the Wii version feels kinda half-assed.
Hey, it was way better than the PS2 version.
There is PS3 emulator (RPCS3) but it's still in development and I don't know if it can run Dawn of the dragon.
Kamil S, Yes, it's already able to launch the game. In fact, it's even playable, despite some not very big graphical issues.
@@wrongjackal2102 Where can I find the emulator?
I played on the RPCS3 emulator and it worked very fine
Wii has better textures than PS2 (little better resolution too). PS3 version is big graphics improvement (better resolution, better shadows and more details on maps).
i wouldn’t say that about the wii
cuz if you go to the other two on the trilogy the ps2 version looks way better
@@TheGoaterGoat I guess that depends on game. Wii itself has more power than PS2.
I am going to guess the PS2 port is itself a port of the Wii.
Really wish they could give us ports of these games on newer consoles.
I just played the game on PS3 emulator after playing it on my PS2 for the past year. MAAAANNN, that's night and day difference. The game is soooo much better on PS3. Graphics look great!!!
I think the Wii Version could have looked like the PS3 Version, but sadly the Wii Version had to be a port of the PS2 Version so they didnt give a damn to improve graphics...
Nope, it couldn't. Wii is much weaker than PS3. Wii components are almost same as GameCube components, but little better. GameCube is same generation like PS2. That's why Wii couldn't handle PS3 graphics.
If You want numbers here you go: PS2 GPU has 6,2 GFLOPS, GameCube GPU 9,4 GFLOPS, Wii GPU 12 GFLOPS and PS3 GPU 230 GFLOPS. So it's 230 vs 12. That's why Spyro looks better on PS3 than Wii. But Wii version looks better than PS2.
I played this game on 360 a long time and I'm wanting to pick it up and play again, but the ps2 version is the cheapest version O can find nowadays. I was wondering is there was any content missing in the ps2 ver, vs the ps3 ver? Similar to the Sonic Unleashed on wii vs 360 thing. Anything like this between these two versions? Cause if not, I'll just pick up the ps2 ver for cheap.
This makes me realize fantasy cartoon games don't really need better graphics, these games look great running on any system, but the better hardware only add more stuff like stones in the river, butterflies and tree leaves...
When the Wii is 60 FPS and more clear than PS2 xD
Lil' M the Wii came out later and it a more powerful console
The graphics may be smoother but overall just as shit like the PS2, despite being released 5-6 years later is something I wouldn't consinder better when I could barely make out any difference like on the PS3 version which is from the same era.
The PS2 can also be controlled wireless by movement with a camera or a remote control like the Wii, not a big difference than the huge game library the PS2 holds in compartion with Wii.
2:56 the PS2 House isn't
I have the Wii game
I love the fact that ps2/wii and xbox360/ps3 still same game. Oh boy how many shit mobile versions was on ps2/wii era when it's was completly different trash games with garbage levels and gameplay
1ps3
2wii
3ps2
1. ps3
2. ps2
3. wii
@Tommy Howell thank you for notice. Mind changes in time.
Now I see that in a wii there is more pooh. Example - 2:27 . And fire, and might be more effects - 2:52
And it's now possible to return Vibrance of ps2 look to a wii, using ReShade shaders.
And return curves of stones, of grass, of water - with the help of nearest filtering of Ishiiruka Dolphin emulator builds.
I wish they tried harder on the ps2 version. Ps2 can handle more than that
The graphics are smoother, there’s flowers, moss on the Boulder and the grass pops out more on PS3/Xbox 360.
Oh wow is awesome like os beautiful cool
Is it just me, or does the ps2 actually look better than the wii
al parecer eres solo tu, ya que al de la Wii le veo algo mejor
Nah. Wii has better textures and resolution.
Kamil S and framerate
just you
J'avais le jeux sur wii et ses mon enfance mais put 😍
PS2 and Wii Look Completely The Same
I Like PS3 & Xbox 360 The Graphics Look Way Better
But "The Legend of Spyro: Trilogy on Xbox One/PS4 Will Look Greater Than PS3 & Xbox 360
Grew with a ps2 in the house and with time the looks of the game grew on me no joke either
U could give me a ps4 Version of the game ( just saying for example don’t be on ur smart high horse about this Pwz) and I would still say “ya sorry ps2 is still way better” 🤣
PS3- The cleanest version of the game
Wii- Runs smoother and looks good than ps2 version
PS2- Don't buy this version of the game.
I mean it could be worse... DS
why?
BLOOOOOOOOOOOOM
the level geometry (NOT the characters and objects) is the same across all of them and the textures are really ugly on ps2 in comparison to wii. the lighting is inconsistent on 360 and ps3 which makes the characters and objects look like they're glowing. this was probably made for the wii if i had to guess.
NVM, only the PS2 has proper directional lighting on characters and objects in the cutscenes. it's super noticeable at the beginning of the game with the cutscenes in the boss area. I grew up with the 360 port and I always thought it was weird how plasticine everything looked. They really overdid it with the normal mapping on the next gen builds!
For PS2 the graphics arnt to bad
360 version looks much better than both
imo the visuals really, really dont work on ps2, growing up i always thought dawn of the dragon was the ugliest of the trilogy. as much as i loved the console i kinda wish id tried to own the wii version back in the day instead. seeing the same game running and sort of de-made on 3 different systems is very cool tho
Tbh the Wii getting half assed versions of newer games because of companies also wanting ps2 ports was a pretty common practice back in the day. Just look at Sonic Unleashed
Wii Vedio process chip is garbage
PS2 4 life. I dont care, fight me bro.
