Leah You are a good teacher. I have been doing woodworking for over 40 years, and have trouble teaching how to set a Plane.
you did it so easy. PS. I have over 30 planes, 15 was my Grandfathers from the late 1800s I am 70 now and learned woodworking from Gramps in his Cabinet Shop in southern ohio.

Best instruction I have ever seen. And the ONLY one that told me about the blade up vs the blade down. Which means I have been setting my plane wrong for over a year and complaining about it not working right. Thank you Jane.

I found my great-grandfather's old block plane in a barn and I tore it apart to clean it up and remove all the rust. I put it all back together and it's been so long since I've messed with a plane that I forgot how to adjust the blade to the perfect depth. Thank you Leah again you saved me!

Thanks, Leah. Very helpful. I was able to get my Stanley 60 1/2 working and was able to remove enough wood to get my swollen gate to close again. All of the rain in Southern California did a number on my old termite-ridden gate. The plane did stop working, however, and I had to mess around again and watch the video again.There's some adjustments with the blade and top piece that you didn't cover on the small plane and that would have helped. Learning how to use the knob on the back was key. Despite my problems, I got my old gate jerry-rigged and that's the main thing! Thanks so much for this video, Leah! Anita

Wow I've watched a number of talks about planes and the y NEVER talk about the basics. I didn't even know if I should loosen the lever cap to adjust, and on and on...and this is in basic planing posts. This gives me some foundation to build on. Thank you
Thank you Leah! After years of giving up hope on my bench plane I decided to tackle setting it up correctly. Your video helped me achieve that. Now I am getting beautiful translucent shavings from a tool that previously was just taking up space. You are a gift to the public with the teaching you do.
The low angle block plane IS called the 60 1/2 plane! That said, this is one of the best if not THE best video on setting up a plane! Congrats, as a shop teacher, I highly recommend her at all times!

Also, your video about woodworking v. Carpentry tells me that as I have been watching various tips, some are meant for carpentry. I expected woodworking or craft level precision. Now I will try to discern the level precision intended in the tips and pointers, jigs and tools. .
I had decided that I could not do precise work. Again, I'll try again, with this new awareness.

I received from my father in law a box of vintage planes which he'd bought, or inherited from his dad, and until now I've been too intimidated to use them, and the one time I tried I messed up the alignment. Now I feel like I can use them, which gives me great appreciation, and a way to carry on the legacy.

60 is not the size but the model # of the plane. It appears that almost all other manufacturers have mimicked Stanley's model number for their planes also. I learned something new today too. Thank you for your videos Leah.
