OPERATION PRESERVE PATINA! Buffing Oxidized Paint and Applying Linseed Oil - Vice Grip Garage EP56

- #dodge #mopar #hemi
The 1954 Dodge Royal with the little HEMI is a sweet old car. I'm going to show you a cheap way to remove paint oxidization and imperfections, how to do a cheap quick buff, then how to mix up some of that majical shine juice, most call linseed oil, to preserve and make the patina and rust shine!
*linseed oil is highly flammable, try to work safely fellers! Don't burn your beard off!*

Not Enough, never enough!
Started my project truck for the first time yesterday. Dumped some fire maker down the drink and couldn't help but say that.
She backfired like a shotgun blast but hey she fired!
@Dave Wray it’s a 1962 Ford F100 with a 292 Y-block and a 2barrel holly carb. Turned out I had the timing wrong and that’s why it backfired.
And by timing I meant the camshaft timing. I was lucky enough to have not shot a valve through a piston. Im getting into my second project now. A 92’ Firebird and it’s going great. Love watching vgg for motivation and for new ways to yell at my car haha. Cheers mate.
"Good things happen, when you cut corners".....WE NEED THAT ON A SHIRT LOL!
It was great things but either one makes a great shirt
@@jamescrossman7892 uu
Oh my God I hope he does put that on a shirt
@@johniesmith7672 I would buy that in a heartbeat!!
Agreed
To clarify, this is the "home brew" shine juice which is temporary and sticky. The NEW shine juice available at www.vicegripgarage.com has 20+ ingredients and drys to a NON STICKY finish that doesn't attract dust or bugs!
I just recently purchased some of the shine juice and for some reason it doesn't want to dry for me, am I not doing something right? Was wondering if you had any clue to what might be making it not dry, I really appreciate any of your input.
Thanks, Ron Thomas
It’s a rare gift when someone can make you laugh and teach you something at the same time. Love your Chanel
“Good things happen when you cut corners”. LMAO. Absolutely the best line I have heard for years. Can’t stand laughing this much!! Love this channel.
Thanks for watching Richard
My daughter and i love watching your channel
Awesome, hi to you both
You should put that on a shirt. I bet we would buy it!
Richard, I'm with you.. that's the exact line that sent me to the comments lol. What a beaut this car is.
“Great things happen when you cut corners.” Gold.
😎
I wish this video was available 20 years ago. My life would be so different now.
“ don’t dig to much, we aren’t picking a wedgie out” lol 😂
She's a Beaut, Clark. Seriously, it looks really good.
Thank you
Shitter's full!
"You think you hate it now, but wait 'till you driver her!"
Man I love this guy he always makes me smile
Me too
Well I’ll be dipped
I have watched a lot of patina videos to see what to do about my truck and this is my favorite one. Mine is in similar condition, but a lil worse and this makes me think I can actually get it done. All the others looked like a pain that I didn’t want to do lol. Thank you, you’re awesome
What a joy and fun to listen to you and watch you. I really love how you preserve Dodge Royal's patina. I will do similar things to my goodies.
I'd rather watch you fight with a vehicle than work on my own. These damn digicals got a guy in a real pickle!
Ahahaha 🤣

Hello Derek and Jessica...always look forward to finding out what's coming up next....genius work!
Hey Bill! Thanks
The SOS pads was a great bit of advice. Heading into the shed to do the F100 now.
Hey @vicegripgarage I have to tell you that you have opened my eyes to a whole different out look on vintage/classic/antique cars... I'm a huge classic car guy and I was 1 of those dummies that only looked for 2 door models if a 4dr model shower up, my first thought was YUK. My next issue was when I found a 2 door thst I liked I'd immediately work on getting the car painted and just go crazy on it. Viewing your channel the last few weeks.... you have given me this huge inspiration that even the 4 doors are gorgeous and I don't have to go nuts with paint I can just get her running and give her a nice little bubble bath and she will look great with that I'm an old lady patina so I must say Thank You man. you have opened my eyes to the fact that these cars are all going away and they don't have to look brand new to be appreciated!! If I think of all the 4 door models I passed up on, I should be dipped in cow Manure... So thank you Sir!!!!! I have a feeling my collection is about to get way bigger! P.S. if you get a message from my old lady just ignore it. Shes believes in you can only drive 1 car at a time, so no need to have so many.... so Thanks Again and keep saving these beauties!
It’s just the best part of the day when a guy see’s another pending upload being posted up on the old inter web.
see ya tonight bud
When was that filmed, because there are leafs on the trees and a fella is cutting his lawn.
@@brendanc5519 That's funny because I was wondering the same damn thing. I said, there ain't no way in hell that there is leaves on the trees in Minnesota on 1-31-2020!! I'm in Mississippi and we ain't even got our leaves back yet. Haha!

I really love this old Dodge. I liked it when you drove it home, but now I love it. Beeeyoooteeefulll.
Yeah guys startin to get a little attached
@@ViceGripGarage Some of Us More than a Little That's so Close to my Dream Last HotRod it's Eerie ! !
You and your Dodge are so real homely , down to earth and well matched , gives us other everyday folks some inspiration to just have a go .
Haha, I saw your warning in the intro "Im an idiot" I subscribed right away!
Personally my favorite car of yours - something to be said about those 50's 4 doors that people generally ignore. A guy can't wait until 7pm!
Shea a beut honestly too good for me
Got a 50 plymouth deluxe. Love it!!
Never would of thought of linseed oil. You're a genius Derek! Looks great!
Thanks Mike
Man, I'm lovin' this old Dodge - that patina really turned out amazing. Gotta remember that linseed oil trick -- excellent idea!
I love everything about this car and Ive learned quite a bit since you decided to get this car and drive it home. I cant believe to shine. Thank you. Canada.
Black Velvet and popcorn, engaged. Recliner, check. VGG video, coming soon to a home theater near you!
Haha.. see you tonight!
This car got me crazy, I really hope you get her mechanically good and restore the interior a little because she is a beauty, I would daily drive it without a doubt
You simply cant DAILY DRIVE, a 66 year old car. They wont tolerate it, and cant take it. And if you've never driven cars this old, you'll be if for a rude awakening if you do. They drive NOTHING LIKE MODERN CARS. And that's not a positive. In fact they drive very differently from cars even from the mid 60s. My 58 Cadillac is in excellent condition, lifelong southern California car, my parents bought it in 1960. I would never daily drive it, nor would I want to. I remember when it was the family car. And was a daily driver. We used to drive it from southern California to Missouri every summer for about 5 years in the early 60s. Theres no way she could make a journey like that again!. She's great for around town, and an occasional 60 or 70 mile trip, she is for fun, car shows, etc. And of course sentimental value. Not many people at 61 years of age like me, can run around in a car their parents bought when they were just 1 year old!! Lol.
@@johnfranklin5277 oh sorry, i didnt saw that comment, so im responding 2 month later, my bad. And though I completly get what you mean, I must respectfully disagree, my mate daily drives a 2cv, (a french car that is bascially a can with wheels with an aircooled 2 cilinder boxer engine that makes 30hp, car barely reaches 60mph) another mate of mine daily drives a 6 cylinder ford falcon, and I drive an 81 citroën cx athena, granted its not the same as a new car, none of them are, you gotta take a lot of care of the car, and its almos esential to know a little about how to fix any problem. But we overlook that, because there is some sort of enjoyment I dont get in a new car, a sense of personality, of history, a conection to the machine you dont feel in new cars, yeah they give some more troubles, they are less confortable, but they give unique experiences, unique friendships, and make you enjoy the driving more.
@@johnfranklin5277 Good advice!
@J.P. Craven exactly. My 79' dodge Powerwagon isn't nearly as old as some people's cars, however she has a lot of miles on her and she gets driven every day. She takes it pretty well.
There is no reason a very old car cannot be driven regularly. My daily is 30 years old with 400,000 miles on the clock. There is one couple who regularly drive around town in a 1912 Ford Model T. It does not see the highway because top speed is about 35 mph, but they add about 5,000 miles a year on the old girl.
You are a good man for preserving and enhancing that patina. Friggin' COOL. Waaaay cooler than repainting, because the car has a story to tell. A repaint wipes the stories away. You will draw more people to your car over a restored one any day.
This is my favorite car channel out there. Your kind of humor hits me just right. I finally figured out who you remind me of. Steve Smith of The Red Green Show. It's that straight faced humor I can't get enough of. I try it out on my family from time to time, but I get the sense my signals are gettin jammed. Keep up the good work.
I love the old iron. I can't wait til tonight. I'll be here with my cold snacks! 👍
See you soon Jim
or a mountain soda
“Had a camshaft fall on my head”. That explains a lot lol.
🤪🤣🤣
That is absolutly gorgeous. Such an awsome patina one of the nicest I've seen to date and such a simple process
Parts cleaner cleans everything! Thanks Derrick for the great work you do and the laughs
The fit of body panels deserves the TLC you gave her.A work of art! I could tell you really enjoy getting your hands into it, Addicted to your videos. Really glad to see someone of a younger generation appreciating these old classics.
I hope to buy an old 50's car when I move to Tennessee. Thanks Derek for all these how-to vids on restoring these old gals! I want to do this too on mine. Creative Artistic Aging!
Not sure exactly why but the first episode I saw this rig I fell in love with it. Every time I see it I like it even more. Hope you decide to keep it for a while, put some more work into it and enjoy takin her out for a rip from time to time.
See ya tonight! Thanks for the content 👍 I'm calling it right now, VGG at 1 million subs by 2021!
Hahaha! Fingers crossed! See you tonight
@@ViceGripGarage great
I really like this dodge, it's got so much character, and it just wants to run, looking forward to more.
more coming, thanks for watching
You are freaking awesome dude! I’m thinking of doing something cool with my 2 door Chevy Tahoe and didn’t want to repaint it because I want it to be more rustic. Searching the inter webs I stumble on your channel. Dude the intro, fireeeeeeeeee!! Dude now I see what a good UA-camr is like! Natural, speaking to your core audience! Dude have a good one, you got a sub!!!!
That is one beautiful old Dodge. Thanks for sharing it
I love this car!!! And I can't believe how nice it shined up with just some steel wool and linseed oil!
When I worked doing auto detailing and Aluminum polishing, we used S. O. S. pads to clean the Aluminum Wheels and tanks on Big Rigs. We could get those things to shine even before polishing.
I have never been much into the 4 door 50's cars until now. I love this car. What is even better is that I usually look at something like what you have done here and automatically think it would look better restored. No Sir, not this one. What you have done to it is about as good as it gets !!!
thank you Michael
I used to do the old Comet scrub down to get the oxidation off and followed it with Turtle Wax , it worked great ! I love your idea , never thought of that .
Love to see much more on this old car... fix up the brakes, the interior and fuel system etc. beauty piece of history.
Working on it 🤘
Man I like that car. Keep giving her some love man.
Will do
Thanks for the awesome tip. I've used S.O.S. pads on pitted chrome for years but never considered it for the paint.
Slowly working my way through your videos, love your sense of humour and at the same time learning so much off you. I have a 74 Econoline E100 over here in the UK which i shall use the shine juice on but in two minds wether to oil it all over or polish the good paint and oil the parts down to the brown rusty look lookihg for advice, keep the great videos coming.
Looking good. Can't wait to see the next steps on her. I am just getting started on replacing the exhaust on my 67 Stang. Just finished up the suspension. Rear leaf springs were a royal pain to get off.
Love everything you and your family share. Great family friendly content.
Thanks Brittany
The chrome on that car is beautiful! My favorite series of videos you have done so far. I feel a strange connection to that car, kinda like my kin folk that have passed on now may have owned one. My Grandpa that passed in 72 always drove a Dodge. That would have been a Cadillac to them
He was a painter and worked for every nickel he got and maw maw sewed and made clothes and dresses and such for folks. Wish I had the last truck I remember him having when I was a kid. Back in the day the Mopars seemed to be cheaper and kinda for poor folks that couldn't afford the nice new Chevy's. Nowadays thanks to you, that old Dodge is getting the respect it deserves.I have three vehicles in the driveway and one in a building and I'd trade three of em for that car. I'd trade them all except I have to have one to get to work😂. Thanks for doing what you do to preserve the old stuff. God Bless you Sir! Your videos are so much better than the news😊🇺🇸!
Just started watching your videos, there great , usually i lose intrest in some of the guy's videos, but i really enjoy your attitude, more down to earth. I don't want to watch some 35 year old guy with 5 earings and making hand gestures like he's still in high school. Thanks for the video enjoyed it.
I think she's a keeper. Just imagine what you could do with some other factory stock cleaning and improvement operations. She looks really good.
Hey Derek, that looks freakin awesome fella! Love those 50’s cars and you’re doing a great thing by preserving that Dodge. Get them brakes done and whatever and drive that old girl as much as possible. Thanks for the video. Can’t wait for the next one. Cheers 👍 Mark.
Thanks for stopping by mark
I just used this trick on my 57 Bel air. Works like a champ! It brought the Tropical Turquoise color back and made that red primer shine like a new penny! After it dried, I put a hard wax over it...looks amazing!
Bought a '50 Dodge Coronet back in 1975. Made her road worthy and drove her daily for 12 years.. Sold her to a young kid (wish I had kept her) who drove her home to Minnesota from south east Kansas without a hitch. Loved the "Gyro-Matic" tranny. Two forward gears with an overdrive on the differential. Keep up the good work. Love your videos.
Vice grips garage puts up a new video I drop everything and watch😁👍👍👍👍
Love this had one when i was younger brings back old memories would be proud to drive this anywhere Kentucky here love your channel
Kentucky here as well!
And another Kentucky here 👍 I'm gonna use that 🆘 pad trick on my '92 stepside Chevy truck.
“Kind of smells like Worcestershire Sauce and magnets”. Haha!!
I've never been partial to pre-60s cars, but that girl is beautiful. Whoever owned that car loved it and took amazing care of it. If they've departed, they are smiling down on you. And if not, hi awesome car owner, glad you get to see your baby have some new life brought back into her.
Love this car. Glad to see it back. Great tutorial.
thanks Thomas
This guys foot just had some surgicals done and well, seein your vidyas really just makes a day better. Thank ya

I'm liking the 54 dodge. I'm also a 54 model, just turned 66. Happy New Year
Nice to watch someone relaxed working on a car enjoying his work
Derek, what a beautiful car. This was one of my favorite episodes of yours. Getting rid of the Worcestershire Sauce and bacon smell had me falling out of my chair. Good stuff. Looking forward to the next one.
But I like worcestershire and I like bacon... Now I gotta try them together. Like the old "You got your chocolate in My PNB" moment.
Get the break squashers and fuel mixalater fixed on that buggy and she’ll be fantastic

I know that I'm late to the party, but I have to say that this video is golden and it's not just the comedy genius, but also the excellent expert advise. The car turned out absolutely gorgeous! I cannot wait to watch your opening episode on Motor Trend.
This would be my daily driver, at 70 I would feel like a kid again.

I remember my Dad had me use 4 ought sos pads on the chrome bumpers of our old cars then use turtle wax paste wax to really get a shine, Pops liked them to shine. Not sure of your first name, I just subscribed today and this is the first video of yours I watched. Good tips and I'm looking forward to see the old Dodge hemi humming. You remind me of a Minnesota version of Red Green. If the women don't find you handsome at least they'll find you handy. Keep your stick on the ice and cheers from former Illinois boy who lived 39 years in Florida and now retired in Tennessee.👍😷🍻
Great car, my brother-in-law had one just like it on the farm in Wisconsin, same color, sure brings back memories. Love your videos.
Looks freaking great man!! Thanks for preserving some great looking history. :)

Love that car.Back here again. Grand Dad had one same color I drove it 63 years ago when I was 8, wish I had some money so I could make an offer on it...
Beautiful car , crazy great motor. Thanks for bringing her back !
My 62 f100 stepside has been redone but with laquer so it has old school oxidation like that , blue over white , ( wish they’d have left it alone but those good old 80’s you know, GM subframe and all) would like to take it back to that but I’m sure won’t happen.anyhow gonna try what your doing here,
Nice 👌 This will come in handy on my '69 International Loadstar.
Looks good I like the old car especially having the hemi
Lean up against the wall” , Good one LOL😊👍. Your so relaxed ,your comments actually remind me of myself !😂. The attitude I would have !
Great content. You remind me of two of my cousins from opposite sides of the family (NS). I have a personal connection to a black and white 56 dodge my older brother had around 1980. I remember it flatter and wider but of course I was only about 8. Make this one sing.
Hey Derek, we need a T-shirt that says "Great things happen when you cut corners!" -VGG
I'll buy one.
You're unique, i like unique stuff! keep it up man, HI from Uruguay!
I had a '51 Chrysler Saratoga in the same faded blue color. Wished I'd seen your tips when I had it. Old Mopars rule! Caught you channeling Eminen with the "blah blah blah blah" thing! Your videos are inspiring to me as a fellow garage wrench, but without your skill.
I've never seen boiled linseed oil as a metal treatment, but used a bunch of it on walnut stocks. A little mention of spontaneous combustion might've been a good idea.
For some seriously silly reason, I've fallen in love with the old dodge even though I'm an early to mid 60s ford guy. Very entertaining!
