8:43 I met Jodi Benson at a local Comic Con in 2018, and asked how she thinks Ariel and Flounder met. She believes they met when they were younger, as shown in the TV series, but didn't introduce each other until Ariel's Beginning.
The plot is basically “Footloose” underwater. So I guess this makes Ariel the great hero Kevin Bacon...

I'm with you there on Arista. Not only is she beautiful, but I enjoyed the episode of the Little Mermaid series where she was the focused along with Ariel.

Believe it or not, 16 years before Ariel’s Beginning was made, there was actually an animated series which itself was took place before the original film and the writing in it was less asinine than this prequel.
LOL, there was that one episode that was bizarre even by the show's standards, they discover frozen dinosaurs and they thaw and start chasing them... underwater. 😂

Let’s face it, aside from the animation and fleshing out Ariel’s sisters a bit, the only thing worth remembering from this movie is Jodi Benson reprising her role as Ariel. It’s always a treat to hear her voice.

Before details of the plot were revealed, some fans thought that the premise was going to be about Ariel telling Melody about her origins, which was backed up by Tara Strong being credited as a Voice Actress involved in the film, as well as a leaked storyboard where Ariel is conversing with Sebastian and Eric comes in and asks if someone's acting a bit crabby, and also the teaser trailer in The Little Mermaid Platinum Edition
That would've been a great idea for a prequel instead of ripping off footlose,
I disagree with him on finding only one of them attractive. I think that Ariel and her sisters are all equally just as hot. Seriously, how can you pick just one?

That’s fair. They’re all awesome. Judging them from best to weakest is also impossible, because of that. You can definitely tell the animators had the time of their lives, workin’ on each of ‘em. That’s for certain.

Not as bad as Mulan 2 or Belle's Magical World but Ariel's Beginning sure left a lot to be desired.

As much as I hate Doug Walker nowadays, one of the things I still agree with him on is that this movie easily could have just had Ursula in Marina Del Rey's role and it wouldn't be any different.
I was disappointed that Marina didn’t get changed into Ursula.

Kenneth Mars didn't reprise his role for this movie because he fell horribly ill and 3 years later in 2011, he died.

Fun fact: Originally the third Little Mermaid movie was going to be a sequel to TLM 2, about Ariel, Eric and teenage Melody stuck on an adrift ship while looking for a mystical white whale.
I Hate John Lasseter even more now, not only for Allegations of sexual misconduct and exit from Disney/Pixar, but also because he change the film from another sequel staring Melody who I really love to a bad prequel staring Ariel who I really think is overrater.

What if there was a series about Melody trying to balance her duties as the princess of Tirulia and her passion for the ocean by acting as an an ambassador between Atlantica and Tirulia? And she could receive a magic ring that turns her into a mermaid when put on so she could have adventures with her cousins and younger brother.
Haven't seen this movie, nor do I plan to, but I'll admit that the animation looks beautiful. As far as Little Mermaid prequels go, I think I'll just stick with the animated TV show. Heck, there was one episode that revealed how Ariel and Flounder first met each other, and it was really cute. Even the villain of that episode was really cool.
Good thing this is the last of those DTV Disney sequels/prequels/midquels.
The tv series decent, this movie no good. They didn't give Athena a bigger role plus no Ursula in this at all, this movie just boring to me just like Mulan 2. If I was a pirate I keep Athena and made her my pirate bride instead of running over her, her death is stupid plus the characters are pretty off.
Want a better prequel to The Little Mermaid? Watch the Animated Series from 1992-1994.

Oh wow, this is the earliest I've been on a video. I haven't watched any "Little Mermaid" movie in *years* .
Watch the first again. It's pretty darn good, not perfect but you can understand why it took the world by storm.
I honestly can't believe how badly they squandered Queen Athena's impact on the characters. Like, Ariel is the SPITTING IMAGE of her mother! If the movie focused more on Triton, we'd probably see his descent into his zealous overprotectiveness of her. But they DON'T. Not even a MENTION that Ariel takes after her mother, which could've at least given us some heartfelt moments between Ariel and the rest of her family as they deal with her loss. But NOPE.

The one thing I could never get about this film is why they didn't bring Ursula back as the villain. She clearly stated in the original film that she did work at the palace, so this could have also brought greater clarity to why she was pretty much exiled and hated Triton so much.
Overall if there was one film I wish we ended the DTV era on, it would have been 'Dumbo 2'.
Mainly because since the original film's writer, Joe Grant, was heavily involved in the film before his passing (and had Burny Mattinson working alongside) I think even with it's simple plot it would have been better than a Mermaid prequel.
In fact I can never work out why Disney never brought ;Dumbo 2' back as a Disney Junior series using the cancelled sequel as a TV pilot. They had all the characters were there with their personalities all reflecting different characteristics and behaviour of young children.
I'm so glad this was the final nail to all of the Disney Coffins that got Intoxicated with otherwise we could've cash grabbed on the lesser known Disney Movies that no one else stil asked for.
I think the Live Action Remakes by Disney are worse the Disney Direct To DVD sequels, because at least some of the sequels are originals. Most of the remakes are the same thing.

What's A Silent Voice about?
Rae Phillips It’s about this guy wanting to find redemption after bullying a deaf girl during childhood. It’s really good.
This one's a bit of a guilty pleasure, if you have the DVD it actually has a little special feature were you can learn a little bit more about Ariel's sisters.
This prequel should have shown early Ursula....recounting how she was banished from the kingdom leading to her plan for revenge.
It's great to find out how this last follow up to our magical stories was dull and could've added more conflict and situations for the prequel to "be part of our world"! Stay safe and keep it up!
Perhaps it was best that Sora and the gang didn't come to Atlantica during this story
If they didn't even retcon how Ariel & Flounder met in the TV series prequel, not replaced Ursula, this would've been a whole 'nother ball game...

Honestly, the one thing that holds me back from giving the little mermaid film a 9/10 or a 10/10 is Ariel herself, no offense, but she technically caused all of the conflict and gets rewarded for her misbehaving.

To be honest, I’d say that the only GOOD thing about this, other than more personality for Ariel’s sisters, is Ariel’s Mom. Who she was, what role she had in both Ariel and King Triton’s lives, and how she died. Since Queen Athena died because of humans, it explains why King Triton made the law about never going up to surface, and why he gets super pissed when he finds out about Ariel’s crush on Prince Eric. Plus, Ariel looks and sounds just like her mom, which is probably why Triton is so overprotective of her.
This just proves that the animators really try hard with any material, even if they know it is doomed to be a stinker.
That's very professional.
Especially that they might have been working over their work time hours making those movies.

If you want a GOOD Little Mermaid prequel, go watch the animated series, which was SO MUCH BETTER! Not to mention they did a MUCH more believable way that Ariel and Flounder met. While the animation isn't as good as this movie, it's still FAR superior and actually enjoyable!

Here's a little elephant in the room. Shouldn't this prequel be about how Ursula got banished from Atlantica? Many have said Marina Del Rey was Ursula before she was cursed. Heck the fact that she too had eel henchmen gave away that idea. But it was later proven to be false behind the scenes and boy was that wasted potential.

❤💖 Honestly, I do have a soft spot towards the Disney direct to DVD sequels sure they aren't masterpieces and they aren't good as the first films and sure some do suck like Beauty and the Beast Belle's Magical Adventure, Atlantis the Lost Empire 2 and Hunchback of Notre Dame 2. But there are good sequels like The Lion King sequels, Bambi 2, Cinderella 3, Brotber Bear 2, Aladdin 3 King of Thieves, Beauty and the Beast Christmas and Kronk's New Groove are actually good and I do considered them some of my favorites.
Even some of their Disney to direct sequels have better quality animation in the 2000's compared to the other ones and some of their animators are talented with their artwork. Heck, I would rather spend time watching Disney to direct DVD sequels era more than the live action remakes era. 💖❤

The poor manatee deserved better! Sure, he worked for Marina but he was such a nice guy that never did anything evil, he tried to talk sense into her and he was horrified at her evil plan, why did they arrest him with her at the end? What's worse is that the cell they're in seems to be completely underwater with no access to the surface, so the poor guy is doomed to drown sooner or later. Congrats Disney, you murdered a poor, innocent manatee! They're endangered, dammit!

The series was a much better prequel. To me, it just feels like King Triton forbidding something else is pretty asinine. From Athena's death, I absolutely understand why he would forbid going to the surface and hating humans. But banning the music is just stupid. And Flounder raps....The only thing I liked was I Remember and that's because Jodi Benson is a great singer.

I'm a fully grown man in my 20s and I still have a crush on her. But, if it wasn't for her bubbly personality, proactive courage and heroism, her sense of adventure, curiosity, and interesting story, I may would not have her as one of my favorite characters of all time.

Anytime I hear someone say the live action remakes are on par or better than the originals, I just wanna know what drugs they're on, because those must be pretty damn heavy
Here's why a friend of mine thinks the remake is better than the original: "I just like all the changes, such as Gaston being a soldier in the French Army, the truth behind Belle’s mother’s death (which was from the plague, hence why Belle’s father was so overprotective to begin with), the Beast’s initial cruelty stemming from his father’s cruelty following his mother’s death, and the costumes for our live action characters had a period-appropriate feel, thus they were more realistic. I also liked the idea of LeFou, Gaston’s sidekick, eventually turning against him near the end, and when ever one of the Rose’s petals fall, the castle begins to fall apart."

I like the follow-ups to Lilo & Stitch, those were enjoyable, that franchise deserves more attention & love, that's why starting on June 21st, I'll be doing a week-long marathon of Stitch franchise's original Lilo era on Disney+, starting from the original film to Leroy & Stitch, if anybody else is willing to do a week-long marathon of watching the Lilo & Stitch Movies & TV show on Disney+, give it a try, i'll do the marathon from a week period from June 21 to June 27 (a.k.a. On this day August 25, 2008 The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning was released happy Happy 15th Anniversary. This is a good movie to see more of Ariel's sisters

The ending of the Direct to Video Sequels was one of the greatest decisions John Lasseter ever did.
Say what you will about him nowadays, but he’s done a lot of good stuff that we shouldn’t forget about.
You’re right! The Disney Direct to Video sequels had a great run from 1994 through 2008 which was an incredible 14 years. Beginning with “Return of Jafar” was the first Direct to Video sequel, along with other follow-ups that went from good to flat out bad.
Honestly I prefer the little mermaid 2 over this one,I liked Melody as a character. I will say Jodi still killed it with "I remember" in this movie.

A Silent Voice is next
I’ve been looking at this movie sometime and yet I literally probably didn’t try to ask questions, or even try to dive into anything. But I’ve noticed that the Manatee sidekick of that other mermaid, that looks very similar to Ursula. After just observing the manatee, he kind of reminds me of Charlie, from the smiling friends, well nearly a decade before the smiling friends on adult swim. Only instead of being a Debbie downer that probably doesn’t like his own job. He’s more of a pervert then again I’m not surprised by this character I mean yeah, I say, pervert, because he literally stalks Ariel sisters most of times and I’m like wow I definitely can see the perversion right there. Even when I first watched the film for the first time I was like wow my brother does not know what the Hells going on.
He needs to review the nightmare before Christmas and the secret of nimh

I actually just watched A Silent Voice recently. And spoiler alert, there were tears.
This is the first of several opportunities that Disney had to address the death of a parental character and ONCE AGAIN, they failed and instead, chose to make the film silly and cheesy and ridiculous. We SEE Queen Athena die in this movie. That is an AMAZING storyline and it could have had so much potential for the story with Ariel and her sisters. Hell, Marina COULD have been Ursula, whose job it was to look after her nieces after the death of their mother and her power-hungry schemes could be what got her banished. Instead we get this ridiculous and boring character that just wants power and we get Triton regressing back to who he was in the first movie (and i'm not saying he doesn't have good reason) but it could have been done MUCH more creatively. It would definitely explain WHY he doesn't want Ariel going to the surface. Its just like in Mary Poppins returns. In THAT movie, the Mom also died. They had a PERFECT setup for Mary Poppins to come in and make everything alright with their grief.....and instead, they chose to go with the RIDICULOUS bank loan plot that went nowhere anyway. WHY IS IT that SESAME STREET can talk to children about death (AT LEAST TWICE) with sincerity and gentle compassion and Disney can't? Even with films like The Lion King and Bambi where they DO show death....they IMMEDIATELY follow it with a peppy, bouncy song, like "NO NO, we don't want the kiddies to be too sad. Look at the pretty birdies"
Though I haven't seen this one, I would say the biggest highlight for me is Kari Wahlgren as one of Ariel's sisters.
This movie is pretty much footloose (the original 1984 film staring Kevin Bacon).

Also, they want to establish why Triton hates humans, which itself creates a plot hole as to why Ariel becomes obsessed with the species responsible for killing her mother.
Here's an insane plot pitch for an actual sequel to Little Mermaid, assuming all previous three films are canon:
An anciel evil is being awakened and King Trident is struggling to stop it, and so he needs Ariel's help. She was never a fighter? Who cares? Maybe they need her musical talents. Bring all of her sisters in too with their personalities here, have Melody meet them. Oh yeah, Melody is here too. Melody sneaks her way along, disguising herself as a soldier. Oh yeah, she can become a mermaid now at will. Let's say the locket gives her that power and if she loses it, she becomes human again and reuse that point from the climax of the second film. Why not? Anyway, as a soldier, she falls in love with one of the other soldiers, and is tempted to tell him the truth that she's Ariel's daughter, but refrains. Also Ariel doesn't recognize her. Yeeah. And then of course at some point, Melody is tempted by the ancient evil for whatever it is he wants. Soldier boy tells her no, but she doesn't listen because she's upset I guess because everyone found out she was hiding as a soldier. Sure that sounds like something they'd do. And so the film leads into the climax with this ancient evil becoming a giant like Ursula and let's say possessing all of the soldiers while Ariel, her sisters, and Melody are the only ones not affected. However, Melody is also human now because the locket broke. However, she winds up defeating the evil by using her inner strength or whatever, giving her the power of the trident. Of course, she does this with Ariel and her sisters all at once. Boom! Disney, pay up.

Oh my, A Silent Voice is next! I'll be honest, I never actually seen the movie, but I did hear great things about it so I think you will enjoy it. However, I will say that this is a little bit of a heavy movie considering that it not only has a character who is confirmed to be deaf but it also goes into topics like bullying, harassment, depression, death, self-blame, loneliness, and even suicide attempts so this will definitely be a movie that is not for the faint of heart. Despite that, you did talk about Mary and Max(which is also a heavy movie) in Animation Lookback: BOSM so I think you will do fine. I hope to see the review in July!
I think this movie should have been a sequel to Little Mermaid 2 instead of a prequel and be about Ariel’s mother returning!
