  • 28 years ago GM introduced a vehicle in-car navigation system it predicted would become as common as a car stereo.
    They got that right!
Would you agree it's technology that has improved the driving experience?

that was not recorded samples like in every GPS software since the 2000s, but really a synth reading any text, and even if they crammed all of that on a huge 8bit or 16bit machine, it's amazing for the time.

30 years ago that was ahead of its time, and still amazing today they got as far as they did.

Poor TravTek never made it, but maybe someday in the future we'll have this technology in our flying cars....

Im honestly surprised at how good and clear it is. Both picture and sound. Im guessing this is a Demo mode. When these things were getting common in external and even internal devices in cars they could look crappier than that.

I wonder how long it took between ignition on and when the system was ready to accept and guide a destination.

It was also preprogrammed and didn’t need to actually function. They probably just put a small tv screen with a recording in the car.

      >radio signal from at least 3 or 4 solar powered boxes forever falling > calculations into horizontal and vertical data > comparison of the point of horizontal and vertical with ones stored in a huge list of places > output readable text > letter by sound combinations > synthesizer > digital to analog converter > stereo amplifier > speakers

Sadly most places recorded to NTSC standards back in the day, which was not 60fps.
