Lmao right when I switched to tanking and was wondering bout some weapon abilities causing threat and how that correlated with taunt. Very nice video, thank you for the information for a new tank.
ive been a tank main for over 500 + m10s and do a lot of speedruns with friends, a lot of what you said is brilliant apart from, id advise hitting the mob before you taunt, this will give you guarenteed aggy no matter what, and do damage while your tanking, i spend more time dodging as a tank then blocking unless theres a lot of mobs and if you have warded gear you dont need more than 200 con, good video though its good for the basics :)
Did the devs ever say that blocking generates threat? I might be losing my memory in my old age but I swear they added that to prevent tanks from losing aggro while mitigating
Apparently blocking should help with threat generation but it's really ineffective. It's virtually impossible to stand there and block more than a couple of hits before you run out of Stamina, but you also have the problem with the way healers generate threat by healing seems to be way more than the amount you do from blocking, so the enemies will frequently just run off to the healer in that situation.
I assume you actually need to hit enemies or cause damage to generate threat? Hitting enemies nearby doesn't cause threat? So each threat level is handled individually per enemy?
Hey. Nice vid. looking forward for more. Now a question: I am playing a tank successfully for a few months now. The classic way, as you describe. But I would like to look into ways to combine sword/shield tanking with magic. Do you have experience with the HATED perc on armor? Could it work to replace the carnelian gem in the weapon?
If you went and dropped the carnelian gems then you have the issue where you have no physical "taunt" skill. Then you'd be relying entirely on Threat which is a dangerous game to play - if you run into combat with multiple enemies, you'd need to be pushing an incredibly high level of threat quickly to prevent the enemies running immediately to the healer. If a healer gained aggro of an enemy, it would become somewhat difficult to gain it back. Would it really be worth it to switch 2 gems to something else but then need the hated perk on all your gear to achieve a similar result? I doubt it, but if you have the gear then give it a try and let me know how it works!
@@TheTankClub Thanks! Was not aware that the taunts would only work with the carnelians, and not us the armor percs. In that case I think it would not work. I would not run a tank wothout taunts.
I'm struggling as a fresh 60 and tanking. By reading these comments it seems I'm blocking too much. I can hold threat but seem to take a lot of dmg. Does it matter wut shield i use? Any other tips?
I had similar problems at the start also - being able to drop block and face Tank which you pretty much have to do does require a good healer and I think many of the issues come down to the way healing works in the game. That being said, it’s a good idea to help yourself by making sure you’re applying weaken to enemies and buffing yourself with fortify. Using a good Heartrune is really helpful. Making use of Health, Health Regen and Ward potions since all 3 can be used at the same time. Using Leeching perks on Jewellery and Weapons and most importantly - making sure to dodge more than blocking to just avoid attacks all together - that does require time to recognise mechanics to be does efficiently.

yes agree almost all of them are about tree builds and gear builds but none of them really go into detail about holding aggro with the builds

in a perfect group where dps don't attack the mobs first and the healer doesn't place there healing down before you grab agro can only be a dream

Unless you use a taunt skill like Berserk or Defenders Revolve you do have to hit a target to increase threat yes
