If you have an existing garden, then your original choices may not be the most ideal for the current weather from hell. I have mature maple trees that are dropping leaves from lack of water. Water is expensive here in Williamsburg, Virginia and it’s costly enough just to keep perennials and annuals alive, never mind watering trees. My alliums are thriving in this weather too. Thanks for all the tips on drought resistant plants. I will definitely choose carefully when replacing or replanting this fall and next year. We have a sprinkler system, but with this weather, many areas are just not getting enough water. Watering by hand is too time consuming and expensive, and requires me to be out in this beastly heat. This season has been a real learning curve, and has changed my thinking about what to plant. Gomphrena will be something I will grow in my annual areas for sure.
I mulch every single container I create regardless of size big to tiny as it really helps retain moisture. **tip** I buy large amounts of much at the end of the season when it is on clearance & stack it by shed until the spring.
I've little by little gotten to growing almost everything in containers. It makes weed and pest control easier, and of course if something looks like it could use more or less sun it's easy to move. In my location I need drought-tolerant plants, and since I can grow things all around the house I can shift things from full afternoon sun (front of house) to more shade at the back, and variations all around depending on the weather/time of year.
Hi Teri! yes containers are helpful to move plants around to shade etc. Sometimes they are too heavy to move depending on their size, but the option is there vs. things planted in ground. Thanks for watching and for your comment.
I had similar experiences with Bobo and Little Lime. Little lime still looks great and poor Bobo is now in intensive care and hopefully can be saved. I’ll try some globe thistle. I find my rudbeckia are thirstier than I thought they’d be. Love your tours. Looking forward to tomorrow when the southcoast should be out of this miserable heatwave.
Hi Dora! I'm sorry to hear about your bobo's also. But glad that our little limes are doing well. I hope you can find globe thistle, if not I got the seeds from swallowtail seeds and they grew well from seed. We just had a beautiful rain shower. I hope you got some your way also! Thanks for watching.
This was awesome! Thank you! As a newer gardener this was so helpful. A tough year for all my newly planted perennials and shrubs… fingers are crossed they make it!
Hi Victoria, Glad it was helpful! Just try to water when you can to keep them alive, and hopefully next year is better. Newly planted stuff that's not established yet is the most important things to focus on as they are the most sensitive to lack of water. Thanks for watching!
I have noticed that with the Bobo hydrangeas as well. I’ve been watering mine daily and they seem to be doing well. If I see any crispy brown buds on them, I clip them off and water well.
The drought here in SW Missouri Ozarks has been punishing on my shrubs & plants planted last fall. I was hoping to enjoy the fruits of my labor by enjoying a yard full of blooms only to struggle to keep them alive! 😭Fortunately we do not have any type of water ban so I am able to water as much as needed ( almost everyday ) but due the hardness of the water it does not promote blooms. Thank you for a lovely video on this topic.
Enjoyed this video- really varied assortment of plants that I'll be considering for 2023. IN RI we've had no rain and a total ban on outdoor watering- needless to say a crazy challenge to keep anything alive. Have been planting more and more dahlias but I'll be re-thinking that plan going forward.. Thanks
Hi Christine! Yes ita tough this year. I'm over in Massachusetts. We have a well so we've been careful about watering as to not put too much pressure on it. Its more important to have water in our home. Dahlias are gorgeous but certainly work. Staking them, lifting the tubers, storing them etc. I think I'm going to grow more zinnias in place of dahlias in coming years. They have beautiful varieties (the benarys giants), and are pretty drought tolerant! Thanks for watching! 🌱
Thanks Steph. I took lots of notes and preparing my seed order. I’m in Virginia 7a and my hydrangeas are really struggling also but that doesn’t deter me from buying more 😳. Love your videos.
Hi Karen! lol I know what you mean, most of my hydrangeas are struggling also, but they are so beautiful and a must in my garden. So we water as much as we can without burning out. Starting plants from seed is so satisfying. Some perrenials don't bloom until year 2 when grown from seed, but so worth it! They are beautiful, hardy, and so cost effective from seed! Thanks for watching!
This has been such a tough year for plants in New England. All my panicle hydrangeas are shedding their leaves no matter how much I water them. The heat just seems to be too much 😩
I agree!! It really is just too much. I can hear the thunder in the background and I really hope we get a shower this evening. We need it so badly! I hope your panicles hold on! My bobo's are crispy and basically leafless also. So sad.
Its been such a tough year for so many plants...the lack of rain, especially, has taken it's toll. I love the scabiosa! I've been meaning to get the perennial variety in my garden for a couple of years..hopefully I'll be able to snag one this fall 🤞
I agree the plants in our gardens are so thirsty and many are struggling. The scabiosa is great! This is my second year with them in my garden and i love them. They keep blooming their heads off! I hope you can find some soon! If you can't find them in the Fall, I know my Lowes has had them every spring early on. Thanks for watching!
@@maureenmckenna5220 there sure is! And it's great! Hope you find some. I have the butterfly blue which is a pretty purple. I've heard some mentions of their being a pink one as well.
Hi Janey!! I think alot of us are dealing with drought. It's either too wet in some areas, or too dry. Tough either way. Thank you so much, and thanks for watching!! The hat is cute isn't it?! 😘
Hi Cara! We finally got a rain shower this evening, it was quick only lasted less than an hour, but it came down hard, and I was so thankful! Its been so terrible. Our summer has been the dryest in 128 years! crazy. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing all this information on your plants in your garden and containers. They all look so beautiful and happy. I too have some plants that I know are not so drought tolerate but I am will to give them the water that they need. I not a water restriction like you are so I am able to water them either twice a day or once a day depending on the heat level. Enjoy your garden and have a wonderful day.
This weather is crazy and our poor plants 😊 your plants are doing really well Steph 💕 I have had to shift some plants around but they’re happy and settled now, I think we’ve all just got to adapt to the weather changes 🥵 we have another week of ferocious heat and here in the UK we are not used to it and neither are our plants 😬 but at least we can have and enjoy some lovely warm weather and enjoy family time in our garden’s 🌸💕🌸
Hi Jasmine! our poor plants. Bu you are correct, we just have to adjust our gardens to what we are noticing with our climate. Interesting that your having similar heat over here in the UK as well. Soon enough we'll all be cold indoors. Do you have cold winters/snow where you are?
Glad I found your channel. I am in the lower Hudson Valley and have had to shelve a number of new garden projects while I spend all day dragging sprinklers around to try to keep the perennials I planted in the spring alive! We do get the occasional drought in the NE, which it is easy to forget since generally rainfall is pretty reliable. The blooms on the hydrangea paniculatas in my local nursery are also looking brown and crispy and I am sure those are being watered. Temps in the mid-90's and no rain have been hard on a lot of plants -- the trees in my woods are looking pretty stressed.
I live in North central Texas, zone 8a. Summers are always dry and hot here. Pentas are wonderful annuals for me. They are beautiful and easy to grow in the heat. Of course, they need supplemental watering. But everything does here. Phlox is a great perennial for me.
Horrible hot weather this year and I have a lot of plants in containers and I mulch containers to keep roots cool and water daily if temps in 99 to 100 plus temps. Seems to work so far. Keeping fingers crossed.
Thanks for Sharing these tips and plants. It’s been a Hot Dry Drought here as well. We keep having pop up showers that miss us. Finally got a great rain this evening. Now waiting for the power to be restored. Trade Off 🙄
Hi JoLinda! Oh that's the worst, when there's showers that miss us. We look forward to them in the forecast then boom, they never show up. Out we go with the hose and watering cans! A shower is such a welcome break in the hot summer. Glad you got some rain, and hoping you got your power back! Thanks for watching.
Steph, this is just a thought, the Bobo and Wee White Hydrangeas' crispy leaves and brown bloom heads might be a delayed reaction to the herbicide your lawn care company used earlier in the year which killed some of your newly planted shrubs. If your hydrangeas had been in the ground for a year or more the herbicide wouldn't have killed them, but it could cause this kind of damage.
Hi Margie, you know that makes alot of sense!! I hadn't even though of that since they aren't too close to the lawn, but its very possible! Thanks for mentioning that. I hope they recover by next year because I really love them. Thanks for watching, Steph
Lots of great plants! I didn’t realize that nasturtiums did so well in dry and hot weather but it definitely makes sense now! I find that heat and humidity is one thing, but full on sun is another. My yard gets mostly full hot sun in spots. Your plants always seem to look so fresh though...so beautiful!
