Great vid and commentary, also great to see my old stomping ground. Grew up in Te Aroha and flew out at Waharoa many times with RC gliders.

15 years ago in SW France as a not so new solo pilot ,on a good day, I set off to a turning point 50 km away. Got there with ease with a cloud ceiling of 4000ft. Turned back and met a cloud street that looked to be bursting with potential. Sink, more sink, tried everywhere but no lift. Problem, nothing but oak forest below. At 700ft slunk away from the street to a bit of sunlit forest and found the faintest flatulation of up on the vario.Sweated and circled for what seemed forever until the vario slowly strengthened and away we went. If it's not working despite how seductive it's appearance, leave it early, identify other options and use them.

Wise words! If there’s sink, there must be lift nearby too :)

"Nose down, we're gonna motor", Tim spoke. In a glider.
:)) Greetings from Germany, cant wait for season to begin, I've diagnosed myself with serious flying insufficiency!

I was training on the Arcus with Roger Peters on Sat and we were in the primary wave at 11K and at one point we could see this white spec (glider) soaring on the other side of the ridge! Maybe you! The first time wave flighting for me, what a day!!! Great video!!! Cheers

Awesome, it could have been! We had about 6-8 of us flying up on the ridge, you can always check out the tracking on gliding.net.nz/tracking to see who's flying and where

Hi from Queensland Tim. I found your site through Mentour Pilot. I flew hang gliders for 23 years and loved every minute of it. I have been up in gliders a couple of times as a passenger . If I were a glider pilot, I would definitely have to have the auxiliary engine just in case. Two reasons. The first is I would want to get back to the airfield and not have to out land, the second main reason is the stress level if one gets too low and has to land in unhospitable or unfamiliar country. Obviously I have out landed hundreds of times in my hang gliders, but I think that is a different ball game.
    Enjoying your videos. Regards Murray

Thanks Murray, great to have you here! Yes I like my engine, although it’s amazing how few times I’ve used it in anger luckily!

I should say as well, it is great practice outlanding when you start gliding. I’ve done 75 or so so far before I bought this glider!
