This entire concert, in front of 150K people in Central Park, is fabulous! No one interprets lyrics like Barbra... you're so right... she's living the lyric in the moment, right straight to your heart.
Incredible performance at a live concert (my hometown)…NYC. She’s such a legend! She looks so gorgeous and her voice is magnificent! Over (6) decades in the business (an EGOT)! 🎶🎼🎵♥️🎤🎵🎼🎶♥️🎤
The song is from a 1965 Broadway show "Drat! The Cat" which featured her husband at the time; she recorded two songs from the show. This song debuted on her "My Name Is Barbra, Two..." 1965 album and the record won a Grammy for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying a Vocal.
My boyfriend was a huge Barbra fan. At his memorial service, I talked about how we met and played this song. Now when I hear it, I get a bit choked up.
Her performance of Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered from 1963(Judy Garland Show) is the ultimate performance where acting performance and vocal performance are sublime and superb. This is the moment Barbra became STREISAND!
The entire concert is available under the title "Barbra Streisand: A Happening in Central Park" which was broadcast as her third TV special in 1968, though it was took place in the summer of '67. As incredible as it seems now it was a free concert held in Central Park and the producers had expected about 30,000 people to show if they were lucky, but it turned out the number was closer to 128,000! This song was one of her early hits, the recorded version while missing the immediacy of this live one is a fantastic recording.
Now go back to 1962 when she was 19 in her live duet with Judy Garland, "Happy Days/Come On Get Happy" before she became a household name. Then cover her performance of "Cry Me A River" live at the Bon Soir Club in Greenwich Village, also 1962. Bring your church fan for the last one! 😄
From her Central Park concert. It was an absolutely Magical Night for all of us who were fortunate enough to be there!
