This is a recording from the show I saw live on Saturday night. I tuned the piano for the show and as I was walking offstage, I passed by this artist, Madison Cunningham. She was rehearsing just off stage. I was WOWED by her voice. I am so happy I heard her voice from two feet away, live without a microphone. Absolutely beautiful. As I passed by I said something outloud under my breath like "that's incredible" because her voice struck me so.

Just casually Shaun Martin on the keys... Anyway absolutely fantastic, Madison has very quickly become one of my most favourite new artists I absolutely adore everything, the voice, the guitar work, the song writing, the confidence outstanding

any musicians curious as to what she’s doing, read below the basics of what I’ve tried to figure out! The song starts in Bb major, following simple chords, I think using the I IV V and VI. It then changes keys to Ab major and eventually back to Bb major. The crazy part that made me an instant fan is when she changes from Bb major to F Mixolydian!!! The exact same notes, just a different note that sounds like “home”. Blows my mind. This part happens right before she rips the solo. The chords are F major, C minor, Eb major, repeat. Those chords are all in Bb but they sound like F mixolydian because it starts on F!
There's a song in my head Oh, a line that never stops playing I'm not sure how it ends I can't remember when I heard what you were saying I'll make the best out of the worst I'll make up half the words and wear a t-shirt of a band I've never heard Because it hurts to be on the outside looking in Well, I do my best to listen But I'm uncomfortable with too much silence From the passenger seat you said "What does that mean?" I said "I'm learning to live with the violence, violence" But I'm not the kind that Wants to be lost I don't want to be forgotten I don't want to pretend That it's alright I want to see these walls Crumble and dissolve around I got my golden diploma wearing a square crown The Class of '14 wore their capes like a reverend's gown All that education won't help us now Attending funerals and watching friends break their vows There's not much that I can protect So I keep my good humor alive Nothing disturbs your intellect Like the feeling of something you can't deny Justified I don't want to be lost I don't want to be forgotten I don't want to pretend That it's alright I want to see these walls Crumble and dissolve around me Saturday morning, 11 a.m. Heard mom and dad talking money again Fit a seven-person family in a five-seater van I guess all you can do is the best that you can Dad pushed it all down like the Gibson in his hand To finish that song that never had a name I can still hear that song In my head (In my head) Information, education, giving and love Questions, guidance, that's sugar in my blood Holding together what's meant to fall apart Justify the reason for the way things are I don't want to be lost I don't want to be forgotten I've got reason to believe That I just might Watch this city's walls Crumble and dissolve around me I'm not afraid, afraid to lose It's a voice that I can't refuse Maybe I don't have the right to choose what calls my name

So refreshing to hear a female singer from today who isn’t copying that airy- throaty hipster cafe Sarah McLachlan thing that nearly everyone from the last 5 years has been repeating ad nauseam
I love this so way beyond. So full of energy and confidence. A voice so delicate but honestly powerful. I am left in a world beyond hovering above space and time. Wow, what a great performance.
I'm sitting in my car this morning and I start to play with the radio. This song, this very broadcast (a rebroadcast, in fact!), is playing on my favorite NPR station, KRCC, and I'm lucky enough to get to listen to it, uninterrupted. I love it.
I can’t believe y’all are going away. In any country that respects art the way it should, putting together this performance alone earns you three years of NEA funding. It’s truly golden and if there’s any way I can pay you to download it (don’t worry, I already own the album) I will.
The instant I heard this when it was broadcast, I went and pre-ordered Madison Cunningham's new album. I was going to buy it anyway, but hearing this song convinced me that I needed it ASAP.
Sooo Good! She has great groove and a beautiful effortless voice. Anything she does will sound great solo. She doesn't need anyone. But with a host of other great talent around her...just kicks it to the next level. I am a fan!

Madison Cunningham's voice and tone is so interesting and unique. At the same time though, it reminds me of Harriet Wheeler (the Sundays), and and Nellie McKay.
As of this comment, 7 people have clicked thumbs down on this and have revealed what utter uncultured swine they are. Sigh. Sigh. Madison Cunningham is amazing. As a songwriter, singer and musician, completely top notch. This song in particular is one of my favorites. Amazing.
Melody isn't dead after all.
Wholly unique with echoes of Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon. Stunning song and performance.
You are right, very well put.
Well said.
And a touch of Sheryl Crow.
Joni and martha Wainwright...

I have been in total awe of her writing for a few months now. She is incredible

This girl defines “total package.” Love this song. Reminds me in places of Joni, and like Joni, Madison is helping reshape the singer/songwriter.
It does sound like Joni Mitchell in places!
Just casually Shaun Martin on the keys...

I listened to this while sitting in the grueling traffic of the 405, and I was so, so happy.
"Song In My Head," is now stuck in my head. Very well-written, catchy tune, and a great performance.

How can you not love her?

She’s playing lead guitar and sings like an Angel.
There's a song in my head
Oh, a line that never stops playing
I'm not sure how it ends
I can't remember when I heard what you were saying
I'll make the best out of the worst
I'll make up half the words and wear a t-shirt of a band I've never heard
Because it hurts to be on the outside looking in
Well, I do my best to listen
But I'm uncomfortable with too much silence
From the passenger seat you said "What does that mean?"
I said "I'm learning to live with the violence, violence"
But I'm not the kind that
Wants to be lost
I don't want to be forgotten
I don't want to pretend
That it's alright
I want to see these walls
Crumble and dissolve around
I got my golden diploma wearing a square crown
The Class of '14 wore their capes like a reverend's gown
All that education won't help us now
Attending funerals and watching friends break their vows
There's not much that I can protect
So I keep my good humor alive
Nothing disturbs your intellect
Like the feeling of something you can't deny
Justified
I don't want to be lost
I don't want to be forgotten
I don't want to pretend
That it's alright
I want to see these walls
Crumble and dissolve around me
Saturday morning, 11 a.m.
Heard mom and dad talking money again
Fit a seven-person family in a five-seater van
I guess all you can do is the best that you can
Dad pushed it all down like the Gibson in his hand
To finish that song that never had a name
I can still hear that song
In my head (In my head)
Information, education, giving and love
Questions, guidance, that's sugar in my blood
Holding together what's meant to fall apart
Justify the reason for the way things are
I don't want to be lost
I don't want to be forgotten
I've got reason to believe
That I just might
Watch this city's walls
Crumble and dissolve around me
I'm not afraid, afraid to lose
It's a voice that I can't refuse
Maybe I don't have the right to choose what calls my name
Amen
First time i have heard Ms Cunningham. Will not be the last as she is obviously very special indeed.

John Mayer mentioned this artist, now I'm here and I like it!
I'm not kidding when I say this. I was hoping she and John mayer played. She's so skilled and has a great voice. And doesn't stick to the four chords.
I heard about her through Peter Anspach. I absolutely love this song and performance
Madison is a treasure. Haven't been this excited about anyone since Patty Griffin or all of I'm With Her.
So refreshing to hear a female singer from today who isn’t copying that airy- throaty hipster cafe Sarah McLachlan thing that nearly everyone from the last 5 years has been repeating ad nauseam

I watched Madison grow up in our home church, so happy to see her gifts growing.. She's a natural! 🌹
Just when I think I have a favorite MC song, she defies all expectations. Amazing.
oh man this is good. I watched it three times in a row and i think I started crying a little.
Love this version - not a wasted note and clearly the mandolin player is loving the groove (and providing some nice vocal support)

Amazing show, I was there and still great to see the clip. Madison is the real deal.

Madison and Chris is just a match made in heaven and then Madisons songwriting which is possibly the best since John Lennon. Respect.
Madison, Chris and Jacob Collier will play together this month. Can't wait.
Love this song, love Madison and this version with the fiddle and slide is so good
New artist discovery! Love this! Wow!!
Such a beautiful story and a sweet, soulful melody. The way you glide through sections/transitions is mesmerizing.
So many good people over so many years, I thought of Tom Rush for some reason listening to this, I guess it's knowing when a memory is being made.
always wonderful
Clear, fresh & soulful.🌷🙏🏼🌷
Appreciation & Thank you.
Damn I miss that show. Madisons a killer! :)

Me too, went back to The Sundays, Here's Where The Story Ends. And how about Eddi Reader in Fairground Attraction?
Ps, I learned about Madison only yesterday because Raul Mídon posted about her.
man i am so suprised to see ryan scott here!! dude rips it up
Spectacular
My fav with "Pin it down" :-)
A van mawi tak!
She reminds me so much of Joni Mitchell!

она просто великолепна
И голосина годный!
Im hearing some pure Crowded House at 4:00
What guitar is she playing?
It's a Fender Jazzmaster
that is definitely not a jazz master. probably a teisco or similar.
She describes it here... it’s a Japanese guitar from the 60’s, modified with a rubber bridge. ua-cam.com/video/EL0FBdVcHlk/v-deo.html
👍
👍 again!
She sounds just like Ingrid Michelson....
Watching Chris getting off on the music is great.
Would love to see her and Blake Mills do a song together
TheSyntheticOmega Someone finally mentioned this! Her style definitely seems inspired, but so unique and confident
Her guitar playing and tuning choices are very Blake-inspired. But yeah would love to see them collaborate!
@@j-snell-callanen26 Sound closer to Radiohead to me.
mm, mmm, mmm~ "Ooh" all over!
