  • Jordan Ikitule’s five-year-old son Storm is at the high needs end of the autism spectrum. Frustrated by the lack of understanding of autism he started the ASD Dads (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) group.

Autistic or not, with parents like that you are being set up for success no matter your path in life. I wish them the best, it's tough sometimes but we gotta focus on our blessings and the good in our lives instead of the bad.

I’d encourage you to focus on what he can do and what he is able to learn, and if that means speaking from a device instead of via the mouth so be it, if that means he’s independent as much as he can be whilst living in a group home for adults with autism so be it. In other words, focus on him being as independent as he can be without the societal expectations. Keep encouraging him and working with him to be the best version of himself.

I think you could really benefit from communicating to autistic adults, especially nonverbal ones. There are good alternatives to verbal speech. Using assistive technology or sign language might be good ideas, it depends on the child. But your child seems to enjoy using technology so an assistive app on a phone or tablet seems like a good option for him (just based on the video). I’m personally really interested in movement so sign language was a good option for me personally.
Also autism is often genetic so even if you don’t have support needs it might be a good idea to get an assessment for yourself and the rest of your family, if you can access it, if could help you understand what’s going on.
In my family there are only 2 people that are not autistic. And I was the first to get diagnosed. And only as an adult, even tho I don’t really speak. And most of us have adhd as well. So looking into that is a good idea.

As a single parent who has a 26 year old with autism and dyspraxia it’s definitely challenging and at times I find it very difficult to cope with so, I commend you as father’s having a great support network.
I wish that I had something similar but I don’t.

There are communication devices in the form of flat screen devices like iPads with communication apps they can use. That combined with ABA therapy works wonders.
