It’s so interesting thinking about how when you’re in school it’s so normal to do all these creative things every day and I feel like when you’re an adult people tend to just let those things drop. I mean I did all creative subjects all the way through education, my degree is in music, I did ballet for 15 years, I wrote and directed multiple musicals… and now I work in admin and I can’t remember the last time I performed in any way. It’s a bit sad really… this has inspired me to pick my creative hobbies back up I think…

If I received a postcard from a friend I would be delighted. Most if not all the mail you normally receive besides things you've ordered are bills or official docs from banks or the Government so an unexpected postcard from a friend would be such a lovely surprise.

I'm not sure if you've already read it but based off what connected with you nabout hobbies in chapter 12, I think you'd really like Elizabeth Gilbert's book Big magic. She talks a lot about play through hobbies. I've loved this series on the Artists date, I did the book about 7 years ago when I was 18 and was a near-religious fan, my relationship to the book and its ideas has changed quite a lot since but I can't deny the impact it had on me (especially having read it at that age) so I always find it interisting listening to other people's thoughts on and experiences with it. Dr Devon price in his book Laziness Doesn't Exist also talks about journaling if you'd be interisted in a bit of a different perspective on the practice of writing daily.

I write letters to my friends every year. For almost no reason, they got a new lamp? They get a postcard. I saw their favourite animal, they get a letter! It's an incredible way to have connection without much effort. It's like sending an emotional text (but they won't engage in a conversation I have to maintain). 10/10 would recommend!

Embroidery is one of thoe tricky things, my hand never ceases cramping. The only crafts I've been able to do without hand cramping are knitting and garment sewing - and I think I've just gotten lucky with the no-cramping-while-knitting. Glad you did enjoy it!!

When you mentioned not liking seeing the surgery, I couldn't relate more to this and I'm a nursing student! I'm absolutely fine with taking blood, having my own blood taken, gory wounds, stinky wounds, nose bleeds, deep necrotic pressure wounds and you could never put me off food with any type of story but put me in a clinical room with anything surgical... I become the patient. It's like my body just takes over and I get light headed and want to faint. It's so strange what tolerances our bodies have and when they choose to no longer want to put up with it!

you can definitely undo if you make a mistake haha just gotta try not to waste too much thread (there will be extra but not infinite obviously)
as for the cramping - you don't need to grip so tight!! let go a bit LOL (you can however get a hoop stand so that you dont hold it at all or get something like a wad of fabric of some kind to cushion your grip! if you keep gripping too tight it can also dirty the fabric there because you're really pushing onto the fabric and all those skin oils we make are obviously going to be oily (duh!) so yeah definitely recommend either just trying to grip less, a stand or something to pad your grip like some tissues or a wash cloth or sponge :)
PS- if you do get the embroidery dirty just chuck it in a cold tub of water with some dish soap and swish it around every now and then (any stubborn bits just rub the fabric together with your fingers but avoid doing that on actual embroidered segments)

    • @MustBeM
      @MustBeM Місяць тому

She does mean a typewriter 😅 I have a different edition of the book where she spends the first 50 pages talking about herself and mentions writing on a typewriter. I don’t think I would vibe with Julia at all 😅
I had been thinking about the book for ages and finally started because of your previous video so I’m only on week 2. So far same as you - really struggling with the text of the book and the religious aspect of it. I’ve literally crossed out the word god on several pages. But did spend the whole last week looking forward to the next artist date. As a currently unemployed and stressed artist with a capital A (or well designer/illustrator) I’ve found them super useful in finding JOY in the creative process again and doing my best to not worry about making something good! 😊

This was really interesting and inspiring! Might do something similar in the future, though I think I too would be thrown off by a lot of the God talk
I do actually do something similar to the artist dates already, had a goal last year to do at least one social/cultural activity each week (since I live alone and work part time, so I need to make an effort to leave my flat, do fun things and meet people), which most weeks I managed to do, so I'm attempting it this year as well.

Thanks for the videos! I have been meaning to do this series for about 10 years, I have written the contract 3 times but was never able to get trough the writing style. Also: I would take 4 weeks to complete week 1, instead of half arsing it which seems to be the better choice!
Currently I am so into what makes sports have such a different status than hobby in our society. Like, people will be renowned for their sports, they are deemed disciplined. Even healthy, no matter if these people are in actuality sick or handicapped. And then hobbies are like.. not given the same treatment? Some of the sports treatment is absurd, but artistic joy could be more supported through clubs, networks, and society at large imo.
    Anyways, thanks again

Embroidery is a thing with a learning curve. I'm working on a huge cross stitch project for 3 months now and I think it helps to balance the ring on my hand without actually holding it and use that same hand to push the needle back, but I'm not sure if that technique (specially the pushing the needle back) would work for other types of embroidery. Just balancing it on the other hand would help with the cramping. I hope you discovered some of the tricks while you were working on the flowers.

It took me about 20 weeks to get through the whole book but I ended up having a very similar experience to you, in that the pages and artists dates were the best bit and the tasks had occasional insights but mostly felt fairly repetitive. I did make a fair few changes in my life during the process, but most of the changes had been on my mind to do this year anyway, so the book just provided the structure and accountability to do those things, as opposed to being the sole reason why I made changes! And yeah the god stuff and the creative-block-as-addiction imagery just didn't vibe with me because I couldn't relate

Their are great story lines ad plot twists in the series and i hope someone enjoys them.
