  • This video has been very highly requested so let's look at my work from home setup! I've gone from a dedicated studio space for working and filming back to working from home again so let's chat about how that works and where everything goes (STORAGE 😍 SOLUTIONS 😍). If you work from home too, what's your setup like? And should I get a treadmill desk???

    oh my goodness your organization skills are a DREAM. a page just for video setup guidelines, genius!
    i worked for many many years from the bedroom (we have a fairly spacious bedroom and the desk fit in there) and last year finally made the decision to convert our spare room into an office and i am SO HAPPY. it's done wonders for my mental health, i also invested in a really good chair and all my back aches are gone, best money i ever spent!!

    I'm all for lapel mics! It's very easy to get distorted sound when people hold a mic that's made to be a lapel mic in their hands, and that is quite tiring and unpleasant to listen to. You're inevitably going to hold it at different distances while talking and it isn't going to sound the same as when you checked the sound on headphones before. I think Hannah had that once in an outfit video, too (understandable, not gonna pin the mic to every single outfit), but with some other creators it has stopped me from watching them altogether.

    I really enjoy hearing about how you outsource/get consultations for what seem like very specific tasks like with the filming setups Mandy helped you with. I'd love to hear more about the process behind this (which sort of tasks, at what point you seek help, if it's typically with people you have an existing work history with etc)

    The back problems took me right back to 2022. I started working as a full time WFH video editor in May of 2022 and that same year I moved to another country to live with my wife (then-girlfriend) and her flat was a 1-bed that she got from the school she worked for and it was filled with ancient furniture and not an ergonomic setup in sight. She often needed space to do lesson planning at home too so I didn't really have a desk, and even if I could use the desk, the only chairs in the flat were nasty wooden ones designed for a quick meal and nothing else. I worked from the couch for at least 8 months and RUINED my back as a result. Obviously editing is non-stop laptop/computer only work so it was BRUTAL.
    We moved into a nicer, bigger place later down the line where we each had our own bedroom and my wife had the master, so she kept a normal size work desk in her room, whereas I had an even cuter solution - we found the flat came with an unfinished WC and it was the perfect size for a 90cm IKEA desk and a rolly chair as well as a billy bookcase and even though the room had no windows, it had its own radiator and power socket, so I had a small bedroom that had my basics in it, and then my own "mini office" in a cupboard.
    Sitting in a proper chair and at a proper desk felt like such a luxury after so long curled up on the sofa and so many back spasms. It took about 6 months, but my problems started to get better with discipline and no more couch work no matter how tired I was. Have you guys thought of getting a proper ergonomic office chair that's a suitable height for your dining table and perhaps keeping it in Rowan's room? You could wheel it out during work hours and put it in a quiet corner while he's too young to really need all that space? It might really help those early 30s back problems us freelancers all deal with haha

    • @morehannah
      @morehannah  24 дні тому +9

      wish we could but he's definitely not young enough anymore to be able to put a chair in his room that won't get in the way/he'll want to play with! one day though! glad your back problems managed to sort themselves out :)

    Please don't let the back pain become too much before investing in a better ergonomic sitting situation, I developed RSI in the first week of wfh during covid and it's still not gone after more than four years, I now just have chronic pain in my hands/arms etc.

  • @Alfiewow
    @Alfiewow 22 дні тому +3

    Sorry for unsolicited advice but if you can get maybe a cushion to sit on it might help the old shoulder and neck situation because your table is pretty high for you, you kind of want your working surface to be roughly where your elbows are! 😊

    I have a height adjustable desk that I got at a major discount due to a closing office selling off furniture in 2021- thanks for the cheap fancy desk and home office, covid- where I have my personal monitor and use my work laptop as my second screen. I have a desktop pc for games that lives on the floor next to my desk, and I connect my work pc to the monitor via a docking station so I don't have to interfere with my desktop setup. My tips for anyone who works from home regularly- a dedicated workspace at a correct height and a proper desk chair. At the beginning of covid, I was working from my kitchen table and it was wrecking my shoulders and neck to work from an awkward position for 8-10 hours per day. Tables are not the correct height for doing work. I had to work from the kitchen for a few hours yesterday while some work was done on our balcony, and my neck is sore today- I had been wondering why until I started writing this comment lol

    My work from home setup is in a room we call “the work room”. Before the pandemic the work room was primarily used for our (my partner and I) various crafting hobbies. We have 4 desks in there & I turned one into a work desk. My job provided me with a laptop, monitor, keyboard and trackpad. I purchased a new chair that was better suited for working from home. I’m glad I have a dedicated space for working in the house, it works really well for me.

    My wfh game changer was to have a bunch of laptop chargers, I have one at my actual desk hooked up to the monitor dock, and also one at the dining table and one at the couch lol. And then I have another that I keep wrapped up neatly that I can throw in a bag if I take my laptop out.
    You could probably get away with just the one extra but it is really nice to not have to think about it, just plug it in wherever

    During Covid, my wife and I started out working in our living room, her on the table and me at our desk. She quickly moved to the dining room (she said I was too distracting 😁). I eventually added a desk to our guest room and that became my WFH space.

    I'm a student and need to read and write lots of papers and stuff. I did manage to fit a small desk into my tiny apartment, but since I am also using my computer for gaming and watching UA-cam and stuff, slowly I noticed that my brain actually associates that space with free time now. So to switch it up, I now try to work at my university most of the time (with friends for accountability as a bonus) but when I don't have the time to drive to uni, I usually work on my laptop on the sofa with a little table on my lap. It's terrible for my back, but it actually (at least for the moment) helps with focus because I don't get tempted to multitask like I do with my two monitor gaming desk set-up. But I know my ADHD brain will require me to change that setup in a few weeks to months anyway, so it's fine. Maybe I'll try the dining table next. My biggest issue definitely is storage and putting things out of sight when I'm not working on them, so that I can relax properly. But that just comes with having too much stuff in a small apartment and is less a "work from home"-issue than a "I'm terrible at decluttering"-issue. 😅

      Also one thing I forgot to mention but love to do once the weather gets better: work outside. Whether on the lawn of my university, on my balcony or in the garden, when I visit my mother. It is really the best place for reading. Not too great for laptop work because my screen is not quite bright enough, but I love sitting in the shade with my good old-fashioned printed texts and sticky tabs and when doing some serious literary analysis. ☺️☀️

    I've worked from home 2 days a week in the past year. And I usually can't be bothered to set anything up. I have a separate room that was going to be office space and everything, but I basically just sit at the kitchen table every time, with just the laptop and a wireless mouse. It does help that I work short days (~4 hours).
    Starting in September, I'm going back to my unfinished degree and then I will hopefully get an actual setup, so this video was a nice inspiration for that!

    I have a half room that I have my sit-stand desk and bookshelves in. I like having my own space to close the door, but it’s not necessary. My home office is my fun space! Surrounded by my books and nerdy posters. 😊

  • @gemzieee

    I work from home - we now have a lovely 3 bed house, so the box room is my home office which was one of the big things we needed when looking to buy a house! We used to be in a very similar flat to you, and I worked from the dining table with two monitors. Our dining table was long enough that my work stuff could stay one end, and we could eat at the other. I ended up sacrificing one of the dining chairs we had and getting a proper desk chair and it was honestly a game changer as I also have problems with my back. Was easy enough to wheel in and out, so if I had extended annual leave (for Christmas or something) I could pack all my bits onto the chair and wheel it into the corner of the room, so the dining table was fully functional again! Now I know I’m lucky to have the advantage of a dedicated room, but I made it work on that dining table for almost 3 years and it was honestly fine haha!
    Also, my office now is full of fun prints on the walls and I’ve painted flowers etc everywhere, makes the space feel so ‘me’ 😍

  • @stella_m_nz
    @stella_m_nz 13 днів тому

    Very timely because I recently moved and I'm still trying to work out my best work-from-home set-up option.
    I have a pop-up coffee table that contains my laptop stand and keyboard and mouse, which all works well for the occasional work from home day on the sofa, but I'm a business analyst and if I want to do more than the odd day at home every couple of weeks I really need to figure out something that's a bit better for both my back and my screen space.
    The new house doesn't have a dining table currently, and I could definitely fit one in, but there isn't a wall for it to go on so it would have to float between the kitchen area and lounge area.
    I'm also contemplating a way to make the tv into my second screen so I will have space for comparing documents and dealing with monstor spreadsheets.
    Basically lots of thinking but no solutions just yet over here!

    Love this! I found that when I started working from home in lockdown sitting in a dining chair absolutely destroyed my back so now that I work from home more permanently I’ve gotten myself a proper desk chair and it’s so much better!
    I have my set up so I can easily switch my monitor/keyboard/mouse between my work laptop and my gaming pc with a little usb extension thing so I just keep everything the same and swap the input back and forth which made me feel like a genius when I thought of the set up 😂

    We have one sit-stand desk for music work and video calls. The desk has a pull-out drawer for my music keyboard. We have a hub thing that connects all our peripherals (music keyboard, computer keyboard, mouse, microphone, headphones) and whoever is using the desk just plugs in their laptop to the hub to connect to everything. The microphone is on a stand that's clamped to the desk.
    Our second desk is in a bedroom. This one has an external monitor. It's especially useful for computer-intense workdays when I have a lot of editing to do.

    I work from home too, and at the start of the lockdowns I took over the dinner table and we ate in front of the tv in a foldable table.
    Then, we got rid of the dinner table and my partner's desk (we donated them to my sister) and got two desks and desk chairs from ikea.
    Since then we have moved from a tiny one bedroom apartment to a house (in a different city), and we now have a home office with two desktop computers (so I no longer work in my laptop), and it has been pretty functional.

    My husband and I have a work from home set up, him with a screen and an Ikea raiser, we have to be disciplined in putting it away as it’s on our dining table with our projector screen behind so if we want to use that we have to put stuff away(!) we are fairly disciplined with it and I have a ‘work box’ all my stuff goes in to go away- when we are it’s SO nice and the space feels really peaceful so also don’t feel the confusion. I’m on ‘freelancers mat leave’ ha, hopefully until Sept before I need to get back to work but want to get better at our cable storage as you’ve reminded me of the importance! We have an Ikea wicker type basket on the floor at the moment but we could elevate this I think! Ta for getting me thinking!

    I wish I could make more of a dedicated WFH setup, but it's nice to see how you can work in such flexibility! On the topic of back pain, watch out for the height of your kitchen table! It seems like exactly the height that could result in wrist/shoulder pain for you. An adjustable desk chair with a footstool to rest your feet on so your arms are at least a 90 degree angle at the elbow should do the trick! This is something I need to watch for as well at my kitchen table setup

Since most housefires are caused by big chargers that are plugged in (and they have been rising in numbers due to increased battery usage) it might be wise to be able to turn them off when leaving home or at night.
